1. It's Star Wars (I'm no hardcore SW fan, but its lore and universe is vast)
2. It's being developed by Bioware.
Bioware makes SINGLEPLAYER games, very very limited and linear singleplayer games.
3. They have gotten a big bag of money to make this MMO work. Talented developer + heaps of cash = promising MMO (=> has potential, doesn't mean it'll be everyone's wet dream come true)
Talented developers for SINGLEPLAYER games. And you know what happened to the last two HUGE big budget games? They nearly bankrupted the companies that made them, WAR and AOC.
4. It's something else than yet another MMO with elves, dwarves and orcs. Now if I could shoot elves, dwarves and orcs with mah lazer or slice them into hobbit size, I'd be a completely happy beaver.
5. Trailers and interviews and such show that storytelling and atmosphere won't be forgotten or stapled onto the MMO as a 3rd arm.
No, instead the MMO will be built around story telling. Which means, linear, scripted, instanced world, rather than a virtual world. This would be fine if they weren't charging a monthly fee.
6. It'll be a fresh, new MMO to toy around with for as long as it entertains.
Any more questions?
Some comments.
Everyone seems to be harping on " but Bioware writes good stories! it's gonna have voice acting!" seems like most of you would be happier if this was KOTOR 3 instead of a single player MMO. I know I'd be happier. A monthly fee for the stuff they're offering is stupid.
Well, that's the great thing about a monthly fee: you only pay as long as the game is fun to you. If that's only a month or 2, then you only pay for 2 months.
Bioware has a good track record in making immersive games; they may not be up to the alley of Battlefield 2 players or shooter fanbois, but I like the style and approach of Bioware in their games development.
Besides, before Verant made Everquest and before Blizzard made WoW they had no experience with making MMO's too. I bet that Blizzard got heat and doubts about taking such a risk and about their abilities of making a MMO instead of a RTS or action RPG as well.
Doesn't mean that taking such a risk won't blow up in Bioware's face, but others have proven that it can be done, successfully, and I estimate the chances of Bioware doing it right bigger than of most other game companies.
About the OP: the list is presumptuous and based upon (very vague) speculating and wrong interpretations.
Asking what ToR has anything more that WotLK doesn't have, even rhetorical, is just plain ridiculous.
Fun, controversial post for a OP though. Will surely get people reacting to it
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I see so many people speculating about TOR. A game that's still one full year from release. It may become a big success or a mediocrity or a spectacular failure. But we CAN'T possibly know that. Do people in here actualy visit TOR's website to read the news updates?
Take a look at this: http://www.swtor.com/news/blog/20100402_001 In this article a developer is revealing the path they are walking regarding some key aspects of the game like solo & grouped play, crafting as well as their approach towards the theme park vs sandbox issue. It's a good read.
This: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=2879 is also a good place to find some solid info about TOR with numerous developer interviews. It takes time to read all that stuff but if someone want's to participate in a serious debate about the game then there is no other way.
What?? You mean I have to read something that long, and like, think about it? Who the hell has time for that?
/sarcasm off
I agree, your first link really is a good read, and that's one of the major reasons I anticipate playing (the OP is not worth responding to but there is an answer nevertheless). There was another semi-philosophical piece on Darthhater about evil and the culture of the Sith - http://darthhater.com/2010/03/23/daniel-erickson-on-the-sith/ - which I was also impressed with.
There is a lot of talk about game mechanics but so much depends on implementation. Everything I've seen indicates thoughtfulness and polish. I've never played a Bioware game so faith in Bioware has nothing to do with this reaction.
The one thing I truly worry about is the scope, i.e. that they have spiralling out of control way crazy scope. Crafting, raiding, normal MMO combat, space combat, 8 storylines, solo and group content, ground exploration, space exploration, PvP.
Although I would be ecstatic if space combat and exploration was part of the game at release, I'd be surprised if it actually is and a bit more confident about the game if I hear it isn't.
How do you know you will buy it - when you don't know what it will be like?
A lot of people had 'faith' in Mythic when we were discussing issues with that game prior to release.
Faith is not a rational frame of mind.
True that, nowadays it's pretty much impossible to have faith in MMO companies after all the BS releases we've been treated to. Reason why I don't preorder and wait a month or two to check some reviews and see if it's worth the time or, even better, play a trial. I should perhaps reword that to " I will probably buy it". Of course, if by release I find out it ends up like STO, I'll stay away.
We should discuss about what has been said about the game already: solo approach, storyline-based, etc, which I see as an interesting direction for a game, that's why I'm partially interested and said I will probably buy the game. Not everyone agrees with me, but that's why there are forums to debate points of view.
But I really don't see the point in saying "you shouldn't play this game because the class will be imbalanced, the pvp will suck, etc". Until they release more (or any) info about this or we get to see for ourselves, the whole point is moot.
I have never played a good game based on books, movies and tabletop games, and i have never seen a good movie based on a game.. only reason i can think WOW had success whas because it whas based on a already well known videogame trilogy.. and not books, movies and tabletop games like most hyped mmos the last years, that failed one by one.. Only game i can think of that could work have to be a Command & Conquerer MMORPS!. Just the part that the game is star wars is just cheesy, whats next Glamour Online? why not something more original like jade empire, Martial Arts MMO could be funny, atleast it would be something different, and based on there own game.. you might say this is based at kotor, but its still not the same thing!
I also got the feeling that this game will attract the wrong kind of people, The same kind of people wow attracted when they went easymode!
1) the devs have said that the game will have everything a AAA mmorpg should have, including crafting amd a player run economy. Anything else is conjecture as we don't know anything other than that
2) The devs have stated in a newer interview they will try to balance themepark and sandbox elements, but the game relies heavily on story, so this is nothing new. And they devs have stated the game will only be like 10% instanced, the other 90% is open and explorable. Exploration will be big in this game.
3) Easy pve content? again conjencture. They said you could solo the game, but you would miss alot of content, but that's all we know.
4) rofl at the carebear term. I love mature labeling. and the devs have stated its called "Star WARS" and darth hater has pointed out some instances and pictures of possible planetary control screenshots, but again, conjecture since no information has been released yet.
5) What lore? this takes place 3000 years before KOTOR, so lore is pretty wide open. And as far as i can tell they are doing a bang up job, especially with planets which only existed in after thoughts and have never appeared in any other game or literature or movie (ex Voss)
6) Again conjecture and speculation, no info has been released about crafting yet
7)class balance? how do you figure? we have no idea about skill trees, skill points, or skills at this point.
why i will play it (thus far on info released)?
1) It's friggen Star Wars
2) It's friggen Bioware (name 1 bad game they have made)
3) I like the story based model they are going with
4) i like the art style
5) i like the vision the devs have, and their vision for the game and their attention to detail
Other than the fact that we don't have any other info besides 12 planets and a list of classes, you can't hate or love any game aspect yet, because we really don't have any information yet on the game. My views may change, for better or for worse, as more info is released, but right now you can only assume, speculate, and make assumptions. There is no info to go either way.
As to the argument that Bioware has only made single player games...so did Blizzard prior to WoW, and look how that turned out. They are taking a big chance by going MMO, but if ANY company could pull this off, it would be Bioware and Bethesda, and when Bethesda releases an mmorpg, you will be damn sure i will be playing it, for almost the same reasons as I stated above. Both companies make absolutely great games.
And to say the PVE content will be laughable, have you EVER played a Bioware game? you cannot make better PVE stories and games than Bioware....i have yet to see a company even come close. And they did not say they were excited over loot drops. Loot drops will be part of the game, but it was the same for SWG...all the best weapons were made from loot drops (krayt tissue, geno cubes, etc)....again, we have no idea what the loot/craft will be like, so stop speculating.
Im still sceptical to this so called story, its like bioware use the same story in all there games!
Its more like an clicheish hollywood theme!
The so called hero lives a normal life, until something kills everything he knows and he goes on a journey to get to the bottom of it, he joins a spesial group of some kinds, get some friends along the way and in the end he manages to kill the reason behind it all, and lives happy ever after!
After playing dragon age orgins and the big dejavu i got from Jade empire, i cant really take it serious when it comes to story!

While ive noticed this before in BIoware games, I just though, if the game keeps me interested and Ive been enjoying the story so far, why ruin it for myself. Just have fun, plus I think an MMO wouldnt have that same story, im sure they changed things around.
MMOs played: Too many Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise
for me its the graphics, the stylised cartoon graphics are too much like that ridiculous starwars cartoon series, the more i see it the more i dislike it, at first i didnt think it would be an absolute gamebreaker, but as time passes, i've come to the conclusion that it absolutely is just that.. unless they do something with that i won't be even trying the game, let alone buying it. They could easily use the graphics engine of Dragon Age:Origins, they already have it after all, so come on, dump the ridiculous cartoons and give us some decent graphics!
I don't really see it. They look like different art styles to me.

Your blind if you can't see it,it's obvious they based their artwork off Clone Wars.
It's not the graphic he means,it's the shape of the limbs and heads plus torso,it's the same as clone wars. Of corse one looks different than the other because it's an actual tv series not a freaking mmorpg but the actual body shapes are the same.

Is it a bad thing,no not really i thought cad-bane really made that show.
I do agree with the OP though.
I see a resemblance when it comes to color, saturation and tempreture of how the shades of color are put together.
the shapes and dynamic anatomy differ though.
Clone Wars anatomy is much more stronger, more sharper lines and edges, characters also complimented with sharper edges on their faces, example, Kenobi's Beard, and his hair.
take a look at his beard if not of that picture but through the clone wars episodes, his and Dookus beard sport a rather sharp definitive edge pointing down ward, almost in essence of Bruce Tim's Batman animated series, Justice League and Ulimited series, batman Beyond, but in 3D.
also Clone Wars sported a higher exaggeration of body parts, such as their hands, or Asoka's (sp) big head, or Vestress's (sp) overly slender body. all giving a extreme personality when they come onto the screen.
now, compare those qualities towards SWTOR characters.
again, off the bat, the colors and hues are identitical or similar to Clone wars. but from their they who a less extremitie in dynamic over exaggerated anatomy compared to Clone Wars.
the SWTOR picture below while looking at it, their bodies are slightly more proportioned, or less exaggerated, the edges are less frequent, giving a more softer rounded look. Ill dare to say that SWTOR perhaps sports more color choices overall compared to Clone wars.
outside of characters, the environment.
the enivornment should also make the case of extreme dynamics in shapes and proportions, while Clone wars sports a stronger array of exaggerated shapes in their organic enivornments (sans buildings) such as trees and creatures, SWTOR retains a more rounded approach easier on the eyes approach, in same cases, less saturated or more shades of value in their scenes.

They are both stylized.
They are however not the same. "You're" blind if you can't see it.
With that said, I don't really mind the Clone Wars style (it took a while to get used to it though), so it's no skin off my back one way or another.
I'm a fan of the clone war series and I see little resemblence between the two art styles. The hair in the clone wars is much more blocky. The weapons along with the ships and backdrops are much more realistic in the CW than in TOR. Sorry, but people are really starting to grasp at straws here. The only similiarities are the fact that both are based on Star Wars.
Your blind if you can't see it,it's obvious they based their artwork off Clone Wars.

I think its easy to assume a reasoning for the graphics, beyond just the fact that they seem slightly based off clone wars. Its simple hyper realistic graphics are the following.
A) Restrictive to too many people, and you will lose subs. Given the massive amount of money that has been sunk into this game, why would you want to excluded certain people?
Takes way more time to develop content for, given the greater need for fluid animation, higher poly count textures etc
So beyond those two the benefit is also this.
C) Stylized art usually stands the test of time more or less. In games where hyper realistic for the era can be easily outdated from a new even more realistic looking mmo. The stylized look can hold peoples attention and forgiveness of said graphics for way longer then if they attempted a realistic look.
Lets use wow as an example, its been around for 5 years, looks terrible in comparison to AOC, but still many people play it and are forgiving of its graphics quality. The stupid cash shop mount just made 300million in a night, so people are obsiously enjoying the overall content for far longer then they should if we were to take the nature of graphics to how fast they are outdated.
So given those three points, I think its quite glib and arrogant to say that they didn't want to take the time and use better graphics, they made a clear choice, one that honestly gets them more money then a hyper realistic look. And money money usually equals more content, so I'm all in favor of this.
I think they're beginning to show more polished characters slowly, the recent customization features teaser (link) looks pretty normal for an mmo (only a teaser ofc).
It's also likely that there will be body customization as we've seen or heard about fat / slim / muscular player bodies.
The armors showcased also look great imo, and the environments are quite stunning.
So in the end I don't think even the 'graphics crowd' is going to be majorly disappointed.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
AoC graphics are awesome.. now if TOR used those kinds of graphics i'd be well happy.. and yes, that clone wars cartoon is just dire....
1 of the major faults with AoC was the graphics. A developer cannot reach a large number of people with high quality graphics. Surprising enough, there's still many players out there on 6-10 years old boxes/parts. WoW is about the best those boxes can handle. That is the reason behind the styled realism look of SWTOR. I think the graphics are fine. As long as the game is fun the graphics won't be as big a deal.
Not exactly true Caskio -
While AoC graphics are a problem, it's not because of the 'quality' for a better word, but because of the game engine / the way the code was handled. DDO / PotBS / LotRO all have excellent graphics too and are accessible to the masses.
TOR's choice of graphics wasn't based on accessibility per one of the old Dev Q&A's but just the way they wanted to go.
I like how the cry babies always refer to it as "carebare" when they're the ones soaked in tears over the concept.
Anyways, personally I don't see why people are saying this game will cus because of their end game content and pvp....they've announced next to nothing over it. There is no evidence of the game being directly related to gear for skill as well. And the concept of killing the lore? I'm sorry, but what timeframe does this take up after? Oh yea, after KOTOR and before the movies, aka, a blank space. If you're afraid of what BIOWARE will do to a story, then you have no one to trust in other than yourself (hopefully) and the lock on your basement door.
Why will I TOR? I will play it for the story, the community, the concepts, the pve, the pvp, and hell, maybe I'll give a whack at the crafting if they implement that. Why? Because I have faith in the ones making this game, the franchise, and the people who will return from the slaughter of SWG to reunite over a great game.

Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
You do realise this game has been in production from 2006 or so right? Before the clone wars series debuted.
So no.
Also, they don't look the same at all, TOR's style is smoother while the clone wars style is blocky.
The environments also look nothing like the ones in those series.
Even if the clone wars series is kind of idiotic (though some episodes are pretty good), the art style is actually rather unique.

It stinks. The style is so bad, I don't watch the series. Futurama looked way better.

Ok, that's your opinion.
It does however, look unique, there's nothing quite like it.

I'm fine with the TOR look, but I agree that the clone wars series looks terrible.
It is unique; uniquely bad.
Not nice to beat on the "special" kid.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
This is why I WILL play TOR when possible.
To me it looks like a more polished version of Mythic's engine.
Considering that EA merged Bioware and Mythic, makes perfect sense that they are using their engine and just adjusting it to Bioware standards.
I will play the game because lets face it, who does not want to be a Lightsaber Weilding Force Slinging Well Oiled Sith/Jedi Machine!!
just my 2cents
Me!
I will play smuggler or trooper and i'm gonna enjoy blasting sith glowstick wielders faces off.
