If you find this game grindy I must say that we are playing mmos alot diffrent To much to explore, to much to craft and to much guild drama atm are making me feel none of this grind of yours
We are just playing it how the devs designed it. 47 levels to achieve, AP's to get, things you cant do until you get more levels, more materials, more money. And APs you cant get without runnign certain quests "kill ten rats". Not sure what great things youre exploring. Ive been all over sector one and two, and its the same repetition of camps with movs, event towns you have to grind to get mediocre rewards, empty conflict towns, and cities where you visit the AH or craft. Crafting is a grind. Have to get bunches of random mats, cant use high quality mats to grind up low quality items. Cant make ore use higher level stuff till you grind up your stats, etc etc etc. It might be fun if it were challenging, but it isnt. The process is boring. Not even the animations are enjoyable while harvesting.
I can see what you are saying. Its the same thing with lotro and me. Im a fan of the books but cant find the game funny- all I see is the bad things (kill x rats, grinding, bad animations and so on).
Im not trying to be down on FE. I enjoyed it for a few months. I just dont htink it has the polish or options to make it fun over the long term. I need open world PVP and full looting for one. And a dynamic fast paced action, plus beautiful visuals. I have yet to find a mmo with all of this.
To answer the thread title, I simply am not interested in the look of FE so I probably won't play it. I don't know if I like that kind of sub-genre of MMO.
It's not polished enough to have mass appeal. The graphics and engine are awful and the combat could be a lot better. This was always going to be the case. It was never going to get large numbers. The bottom line is what do the devlopers view as success? I don't believe they expected huge subscription numbers.
also what killed it for me was how many people and npcs were arround. for an apocalyptic style mmo there are a heck of a lot of npcs/mobs/people arround. it just ruined the whole "fallout" feel of the game.
the very small pvp zone where also a turn off.
also not being able to reset your points. i mean make it super expencive or difficult but not impossible. i dont know right from the start what kind of character i want to play at end game. i want some kind of hope that i will be able to redistribute my points even if at a high cost.
once you get to level 13, you've pretty much experienced everything the game has to offer. i found the community big wigs to be pretty sanctimonious too. Games need to stop letting a handful of obsessed beta players dictate policy until they run the game into the ground. FE is a perfect example of this.
Funny how people contradict here each other. For one there is not enough to do, for the other there are too many quests. For one it's too empty, for the other too many npcs. One thinks the zones are too small, the other dislikes travel times. And all that stuff only because someone claimed the game wouldn't be doing well, without even backing that claim up.
It's like someone writing "how comes the moon is pink and not green anymore?" and a hundred people shout "yeah why is it pink! it sucks in pink!". One dude makes something up and a horde of bored people follow.
also what killed it for me was how many people and npcs were arround. for an apocalyptic style mmo there are a heck of a lot of npcs/mobs/people arround. it just ruined the whole "fallout" feel of the game.
Well newsflash teh game isnt fallout, and last i checked nothing about post apocolyptic means no one survived.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling" Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
It's a good point about not letting a few vocal beta players dictate the direction of the game. I listened to a Fallout podcast this week and the whining on their about not having anything to show they'd played in beta was pathetic. Do they want a medal? Actually, they probably would like that. Who cares?
To answer the OP. The game just makes the same mistake most of mmo releases seem to do, for reasons i cannot comprehend. FE seemed very focused on crafting, the whole wasteland was just filled with various scavenging junk you use one way or another, bumping into metal scraps and tomatoes every step.
While it sure is a good thing with all the crafting letting you get the gear the problem starts when there is little to do beside it. Want ot make good mmo? Give me options how to play it. Dont force me to be stuck on one thing and treat others like a supplements that were just added to provide an excuse.
Why people still play WoW? Because it does offer variety. You can PvE, you can PvP, you can raid. All at about same level of polish. You have options. You can choose what to do. To some extent even Eve offers that variety. You can run missions, you can just mine and play with market or you can throw yourself into big fleet warfare or just small scale hunting. Not stucking players in one type of gameplay is what gives you big points.
Another thing abot FE was the combat. Back when i played it it was wonky, clunky, laggy and unnatural. There was little to no skill, more like turning around and mashing the attack button to hopefully manage to hit something. If you want action-styled combat be it FPP or TPP) make it seamless with rest of the character control. FE lacked the flow.
Allt hose things could be fixed if only devs would try to. Its alla bout polishing the game. It was very pormising title, it had me hooked for quite a while but the shortcoming were a bit to serious to keep me paying for it. Im all for supporting of the devs but they need ot show me they actually want to fix the issues rather than adding secondary content just to be able to say 'Hey we did something!"

IMO, Icarus have always been a little too responsive to this kind of feedback. Early on - even before alpha testing commenced - they compromised their vision for the game based on a few vocal forum members.
Looking at the history of changes, and changes they now plan to make, they're still allowing themselves to be led up the garden path.
I dont play fallen earth due to the Limits they put on skills you can learn, You make a mistake leveling it, or want to change there is no option. This is why I quit fallen earth once I learned about that.
With no trial? You must be kidding. Who do they think they are? Blizzard? I mean sure go without a trial on launch if you had spend that much money into advertising, cause this means you have faith in your product and behind the curtain there is something quite valuable, worth of that initial price you are asking for. But if you don't put faith yourself into it, why should i? Give me a trial and we 'll see.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
My friends and I pretty much stopped playing for the same reason. The game starts out really strong but devolves quite quickly into grinding the equivilant of grey quests en masse for AP in order to stay competitive. It just stopped being fun.

I have "Watch this thead" active on all posts that I reply, so I get email notifications when somebody answers.
I was curious about the game myself and when I saw the trial on the main page I tested the game for a couple days, liked what I saw and subscribed. I participated in the trial, hence I'm speaking from first hand experience. Also by looking at the open side of the FE forums, you'll notice other people on trial asking questions or posting their take on the game, good and bad. So it must be working. Not sure why it's not working for you.

He doesn't want it to work. There are plenty of trials folks checking the game out. My buddy just signed up over the weekend.
My friends and I pretty much stopped playing for the same reason. The game starts out really strong but devolves quite quickly into grinding the equivilant of grey quests en masse for AP in order to stay competitive. It just stopped being fun.
This started to be my complaint around level 20.
I liked the open-ended nature of the world and the fact that I could craft - rather than kill - for the best loot. (Waiting for "loot drops" is one of my least-favorite aspects of MMO games in general, from Warhammer Online to World of Warcraft to DDO...)
The problem is that I like to complete things. I like to explore an area before moving on to the next. Fallen Earth basically had me in an area, at level 20, with content that was far, far below my level - except for the occasional "boss" monster that required a team.
I loved the quest storyline and I still have high hopes for the game. I would love for faction to *mean* something - they have this faction wheel with an awesome storyline and all people do is grind 'round the wheel.
Fallen Earth held my subscription for 33 weeks but this recent dust-up with the employees has me worried. I'll check in on the state of the game in about 6 months to see what has occurred. What worries me is that the marketing people are doing what marketing people always do - anyone remember:
You can always find another game that closed down, doesn't mean FE will. The situation with FE and Tabula Rasa are very different. One made by a small indie, one by a big company who needed big subscription figures.
I'm skipping over all the previous comments and answering the question given in the title.
Q: Why isn't Fallen Earth doing amazing ?
A: Because it was the most awful mmo I've ever played, ever. ... but please let me clarify - it is the most awful game that you have to pay for. Free games are allowed to be awful, because (say it with me) you get what you pay for ! Yes, thats right.
However, with this game, you paid for it ... and got squat. I bought this game opening weekend, played it for 3 hours (and fuck you if you say "That is not long enough to formulate an opinion - go cram a steel dick up your ass for 3 hours, and tell me you want to wait around for the "END GAME") ... where was I ? .... Oh yes, 3 hours - and put the game down.
Also note, I'll play just about anything. However, this game blows hard - and not in the good kind of "chinese hooker that you just met and may very well end up in the trunk of your car by the end of the night" - kind of way. More like a "I'm going to go play out in traffic because I can't believe I just paid full price for this hunk of garbage" - kind of way.

That is basically my experience when I first played EverQuest 2. I came back to that game nearly 4 years later and lasted a full 9 months but never really liked the game. I was just didnt know any better at the time becuase I got all my game information from gamespot which is pure evil in my mind.
I guess my point here is different games for different people. My view point is that if you dont like crafting this game will not be a good experience for you. On the other hand if you like crafting I dont know that there exists a better game for crafting in the entire gaming landscape.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
i will tell u why, after there patch for blood sport i was happy i was like i log my guy is messed up i ask for the correct and tell me tough luck, all my stuff is all messed up and the FE Staff refuses to help. i even called they basic told me tough shit i cancelled my sub. don't go near fallen earth let them crash and burn can't even help people and screw everything up there patchs. thanks for nothing fallen earth i hope u crash and burn so bad! for ruining my game time.

For me the combat sucks and the graphics are horrible.
-Bad character animations
-Clunky combat system
-Uneventful and long travel times
A few reasons I think it doesn't do as well as it could.
have to agree with above post.
