Sounds like one had to research a lot before one can actually start to play EVE online. I tried the trial twice but I just feel very lost everytime I started up.
The tutorials and asking a few questions in rookie chat are more than enough to get started.

read my post above yours, and everyone else's.
Everyone in rookie / help / NPC corp chat will always ask you, DID YOU DO THE TUTORIALS (ALL of them - the in-game active ones, and reading the ones available on various subjects in game; also the wiki online, etc).
Yes, I did all of the tutorials. However, on one of the NPC's missions, I got stuck in one of the locations. So I read up the help file and use that but it just didn't work for me. I even ask for the help in rookie chat but they just repeat what the help file said so it got bit frustrated for me. So all I can do is staring at my ship and being stranded in middle of nowhere.

Thats a collision bug. if you log off, wait 15 minutes your ship will warp to a safe even through objects.
If you aren't willing to join a corp pre eve client install, willing to read telephone directory sized game guides and know exactly what your goals are for the next four years within thirty seconds pre-tutorial attempt you need to go play wow lol.
lol
What is this some sort of ego compensation?
You know what? Write your goals and acchievements in Eve, publically.
Show the world how you advance to achieve your 30 sec goals.
I agree on the corp thing, tho.
It was a joke post lol.
Just saying we kinda expect too much from new players.
Even in regular single player games rarely will a new player even read the in box manual.
Here we expect a player to mess with out of game guides, third party programs and all types of shit to "Enjoy the game".
I honestly think the tutorial missions, Rookie and regular help channels, and NPC corp chat are enough to get a new player started atleast the first few weeks.
Agreed.
The game is worth playing because of all the things you can learn and there is no all-encopassing guide on how to do it. But most importantly, it is on you to decide how you want to play it.

It sucks when it happens though.
Thanks for the clarifying that one. I was not aware of the collision bug. Wish they had told me that because I had gave up at that point but I will give it another go.
I was thinking about being a trader and doing stock market stuff in EVE online. Any suggestions?
Nice story and a very good read. I like your guts and you are keeping it interesting. Last time I was afarid you were going to play it safe (read boring) but you have proved me wrong. Well done.
I would love to play eve i was thinkign about it agian thsi week , but everytime i think about i know i'll stop after liek 4 days becuase ill just be board out of my mind sitting around whille the computer goss peww peww, i mean farmville has more interaction.

are the caldaris still the noob race? last time i played, their missiles hit everytime at every range.
Its a misnomer to think missiles always hit, they can be outrun if you are fast enough, their damage minimized if if your signature is small enough, and many a pilot has found himself dead as a result of concentrated Raven missile fire.
Are they easier than guns, yeah, somewhat, but don't underestimate their value, especially in PVE activities.

I started eve-online cold as well (a couple yearsago) and i remember how ard it was, but something told me i'd love it in the end.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.
Please don't tempt this guy by telling him how to flip cans or he will get himself podded and make long term enemies of allot ot people in Low-Sec. Hell if he does it to the wrong people at the wrong time he can get marked KOS even if it happens in Hi-Sec.
Stick to the 'rats for now... and a long time if you are solo.

Seriously any normal person, in ANY game would at some point realise they were doing something very wrong if they had to run away, repair and come back that many times. At least you'd think about putting on more armor! Not more weapons.
And turning to the rookie channel for help, when your already in a corp full of other people in the same situation?..hmmmm...
I come to the conclusion that people who decide to try eve that are in any way like this person (who I still maintain is fictional) are just plain stupid.
And whats this?.. someone kill you at a station?.. it seems you've confused an NPC for a real player.. *even more facepalming*
If this guy does join a corp, he is just going to be abused. I think its time to put the game down, its clearly not for him.
FYI, this is the kind of response that keeps many new players out of EVE Online entirely. It's probably not best to berate the one person who's willing to try the game out cold and write about his successes and failures publically.
Your assertion that if you haven't figured it all out and done everything "right" straight away, the game isn't for you is part of the disconnect between theme park and sandbox players. just saying.
And I'll go one further...
After reading through all of the comments (and from the previous two write-ups when they were posted), it is quite obvious that many vets of games lose sight of the fact that a new player may not always want to be handheld and told how to min-max to be the ultimate at whatever the game offers.
It's fine to give them general advise about gameplay, areas to visit or to avoid, ways to get into the game at a reasonable pace, etc., but to criticize them for, in the case of EVE, the way that they've outfitted their ships or to tell them that the path they are pursuing is all wrong, is what turns players away from the game and gives the community a bad rep as being elitists. Let them experiment and figure things out on their own unless they specifically ask for help. That's part of the fun and enjoyment of starting a new game. And I'll say this again - contrary to popular opinion, it is NOT mandatory to join a corp (guild, clan, fellowship, or whatever) to enjoy and learn a game. I do eventually, but I have played as long as a year or more solo before deciding to join the (or create my own) game's established form of team.
Personnally, I rarely bother reading what the best way is to outfit myself although I am one of those rare gamers who does actually read the manual, and I usually buy any published guide books, and visit the forums/game wiki/fan sites regularly, and I use out-of-game programs like EVEMon, EVEHQ, and EVE Maps. In EVE, even though I have been playing now for about ten months (yeah, I know, still a noob compared to some of you), I still experiment with various configurations and tactics, even to the point of mixing weapons and ammo and putting various shield, armor, and (GASP!) hull mods on ships that most would not!! I can hear it now - "BLASPHEMY!" " What a noob!" "I hope I run into him!! He'll be easy prey!"
Well, as crazy as that may be, some configurations I've tried (that go against everything the vets advise) along with some oddball tactics, have proven to be quite effective in the right situations, and I can still hold my own in most fights. AND I enjoy the game immensely.
Anyway, to end this rather long-winded post, very enjoyable read OP. Keep playing it your way while using whatever advise you deem necessary for your own enjoyment and you will indeed survive as well as having fun doing so.

He's playing this his own way, and as it happens solo by the sound of it. Sticking to mining is a very practical way for casual EvE players to go I have heard. I guess at some point or other he can dip his toes into a corp when ready. EvE is a slow burn game, so really after just 3 weeks (and just one account and no corp buddies) he is par for the course in this game more or less.
Ravager? Dozen or so Laser turrets? ammo? This entire blog is a sack of lieing crap. Your not playing Eve. I don't know where you are pulling this fiction from but it is not Eve. If you are not going to experience the game properly then move along and stop posting made up babble!

Research is good, but you can do it while you play. The best possible thing most new players can do in EVE is find some more experienced players to learn from.
I still experiment with various configurations and tactics, even to the point of mixing weapons and ammo and putting various shield, armor, and (GASP!) hull mods on ships that most would not!! I can hear it now - "BLASPHEMY!" " What a noob!" "I hope I run into him!! He'll be easy prey!"

Oddball ship setups with a Decient skilled character can work and do very well. Problem is as a new platyer that is not something that you have a shot at doing. When your character still has to put fitting mods on to fit a full rack of weapons, you really shouldn't be thinking out of the box. God bless and Curse EVE for giving you the real options for fitting ships but for a new player trying to do what I do with some of my ships is not only difficult in many cases it is straight impossible.
Eve has a very solid craw, walk, run mentality. The writer has shown the perfect example of trying to run beffore learning to walk or even crawl. Andas he stated he learned bery quickly that falling down hurts. Now while it is not nessecary to read all the new player guides, I didn't, it is damn important to ask questions and listen to the answers.
heh toss a Large shield extender and Invul in mids and DCUII in low and you could make any ship BC sized and under a gank boat with a decent buffer.
I fly Gallente and everyone these days is shield tanking. I fear CCP may nerf passive shield tanking soon. your almost a moron if you stiick to ship bonuses on alot of ships. I dont think CCP intended most of those ships to be setup like that.
I mean is it me or is everyone using projectiles on gallente boats? lol Shield tanking and using projectiles on hsips meant as armor hybrid platforms...
CCP nerf inc. or a buff to armor and hybrids maybe?
Anyway... back on topic.
OP good write up.
TBH, the reason everyone shield tanks is that they want the most mobility possible. Who cares if you can't web your target and hold them down - it's all about running away more easily, right guys? Right?
:P
-Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"
Not sure what ship you were in (there is no Ravager Class), But I can tell you that you had it fit wrong. Lasers and Shield boosters never mix. Make sure you pay attention to the bonuses and the slot layout on the ship the ship your fitting. Laser boats only have about 4 mid slots and very low base shield hitpoints making shield boosting on them worthless. If your on a shield tanking ship more and likely it won't have the bonuses or the raw capacitor to handle the draw of the lasers sucki9ng your cap dry way too quickly.
Never is a strong word the fact is they do, one word = sansha. Good read though.
For a sandbox game that proclaims anyone can choose their own path, there sure are a lot of people telling the OP and readers in general how to correctly play the game...
I personally don’t think this is unique to EvE. MMO players seem to fall into the habit more and more.
