Meh, i dunno what exactly it is, cant really put my finger on it, but theres something about it that just makes the combat look pretty terrible to me. Like, it looks like its fun, but just i dunno, something about the physics or the way they interact with eachother looks well, sort of like was said above about the lightsabers... fisher price made. I would think that $150M budget would bring me something that makes me go "wow thats badass", not "meh, its alright"
if you dont know what it is that bugs you why bother commenting, now you just sound like you have no clue what your talking about. How can the combat look "fisher price"??? its not like the charaters are 19 month old toodlers drooling all over lightsabers?? your not making any sense! lol

I think the graphics and animations look pretty good... given the period of development its in. Anyway, thats how I feel. Im ready to be flamed and criticized for having an opinion now.

I really don't see what is so awesome about that vid. Not one bit...
1- Graphics are barely above WoW, if at all. (this game is coming out in 2000 f**kin' 11 !! Not 2005)
2- The combat animations suck big time imho.
3- It feels static like hell
4- Comments from the devs reenforced my felling that these guys have no idea what makes a good MMO. Again, thats my opinion.
Where is that Bioware cool aid! I want some of this suff.
I have a feeling that if drink enough of it I'll gain some super sensory power. Might be able to see what isn't there too then?!
I'm not going to argue with your opinion as you are certainly entitled to it, but I'd like to address your issues from my personal point of view.
1: The graphics seem much better than WoW, just because I don't see a lot of the 'stretching' of textures painted on polygons that I notice with WoW. The art style is a bit cartoony, I agree, but as much as I'd like to see this game with AoC style 'gritty realism' they are aiming this game towards a more diverse age demographic and I can deal with it.
2. The animations do seem a bit choppy, but I hope with more development time they'll smooth out a bit. (Just an optimistic view.)
3. I didn't see it being as static as most MMOs, aside from CO. I liked how the force users responded to blaster attacks from all directions and deflected them. Again it was a bit choppy, but again hopefully will be smoothed out with time.
4. I can't disagree with you there, but many of us really don't know what makes a good MMO either until we experience it. I'm not placing any bets on the future of the game one way or another. I hope it'll be amazing, I'll try it, and if it's fun I'll play it, if not I'll start looking for something new.
The last of your comment was just mean spirited bashing of people who are looking forward to the game, if you want people to respect youropinion respecting theirs is a big step in the right direction.
What everyone seems to be forgetting is that the graphics, and animations are NOT finalized. Look at the development of dragon age, the finalized graphics didnt make an appearance until a month or two BEFORE release. As a matter of fact, the majority of games that are developed are like this. Many of my fellow game developers on this site know this good and well. It is impossible to judge the game based on un-finalized graphics. You have to wait until the final version is released to make a correct statement about the area of this game.
That scene where the Jedi deflects a blaster burst aimed at him from behind, and without turning around... how do you think they actually implement that? Would it only happen if the character was idle? Would we really see other players do that?
I've kind of got used to combat in MMOs where any two combatants will (most of the time) just swing at each other as if neither is getting hit.
In DDO for example, the trip skill almost always kicks in after the guy has gone a few more steps and then they are yanked back to where they were, except this time prone.
I guess what I am trying to say is that if they've really managed to implement jedi deflecting lasers in an MMO, such that it doesn't look completely silly, then you have to admit that's quite encouraging.
Considering the game is still a year out, I think it looks rather splendid.
The thing that I like most is that the combat is so choreographed. Every movement seems to have purpose. For example; the Jedi actually blocks the blaster bolt, it doesn't just bounce off under the assumption that it's been blocked because of a dice roll lol.
I like how the skills seem to be out of the ordinary as well. Like the Bounty Hunter charging into someone with his jet pack lol.
I can just see him doing that then standing up, pointing at the guy he just charged and saying "bang". (+10 internetz if you even get what I'm saying)
But yeah, it just keeps looking better. Seems to be quite a bit of customization as well. I hope there's a significant amount of aesthetic customization. There's nothing quite like feeling unique
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW -------- Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD --------- Played and loved: Eve and WoW -------- Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P
It was the exaggerations that got me. I can understand if you didn't like the animations, they weren't fluid in every instance of combat, I give you that, but the actual animations themselves are much more involved and varied just in these short videos. The in game footage looks different to me then this though I suppose its to be expected when they are showcasing combat in many quick little clips. Hopefully polish will slow down the animations just a bit so that you can enjoy them, and make them more fluid in the process.
As for graphics overall, I don't see any major problem with them at this time, though I'd like to see it as a finished product. Some of the character models look kind of strange, like they are trying to mix a cartoon style and a realistic style together so that its not quite SWG but its also not Clone Wars. I don't really have a problem with the troopers and bounty hunters as much as the less armored characters, but it really won't kill my decision to go smuggler.
I took the combat in this video more topical then in direct correlation to what I expect to see on launch. I don't think all of your points are invalid, just that they were blown out of proportion to an unbelievable degree.
That video in the link looked much better, I wonder if it was really speeding up that made it seem so clunky. In that vid it was on an acceptable level already.
As long as there's no real "skipping" frames and your limbs don't suddenly disappear and reappear somewhere else, it's not so bad. It's understandable that in a fast paced combat game you gotta make some compromises with the realism and efficiency of animation, and that vid seemed to mix them up pretty well.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
It looks ok, but it just makes it feel even more like singleplayer. Makes me worried when they in the clip says: In other MMO:s you see a group of people bashing one enemy, not very Heroic. Duh, it`s an MMO.
So where is the MMO part of this MMO? I`mean seriously this clip could be from any other singleplayer game out there, nowhere do i get an feeling of a MMO.
Wonder if they really know what heroic/epic means? Zerging hords and hords of enemies is not heroic nor epic by any means. If they don't include challenging encounters and just focus on zerging well you're in for fail.
I'd wish PR guys would just stop the term "bringing mmos to a new lvl" right now it looks like a singleplayer game with crappy graphics. Effects are cool the first time but at some point you're getting sick of it and don't want to watch a 10sec animation everytime you hit your enemy. I'm confident BW wanted to create a kotor successor but became forced by EA, LA to make a MMO..
Anyway I'll see them gathering lots of attention soon but failing to keep them because of their "mmo philosophy".
Missing the mmo part of this thing where are the groups, boss encounters ?If they really believe the story will bind people for months well not gonna happen.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
why is it so difficult for these people to get them right i wonder?
Well, effects like that is usually not perfected until release. Look on any game that is about a year from release, light, shadow and similar effects are never good then.
If they look the same on release day it is time to worry but this movie was actually looking a lot better than what I expected it to do.
They do have a point when they say many players against a single person doesn't feel heroic, raiding against a dragon is ok but doing it against a single boss just doesn't.
I think this game will be interesting and it is good that they actually try to make their own combat system instead of just using EQs as most other people do. more MMO devs should try making things different, the old system works but there are many ways that would make combat more fun.
MMO is mostly about combat but very little has happened there in a long time.

On the other hand is an enemy t that you need many to beat boring also. A good opponent is about as powerful as you.
Zergs can be amusing at times but gets boring fast so I hope they find the right difficulty.
If they miss the MMO part or not is hard to tell until the game is out but most games the last 5 years have missed the RPG part and that is also important, or you could as well play an FPS.
I was very critical of the game early on,everything looked bad.I can say at least the animations look a lot better now.
What still looks bad is the weapons, they look like a couple hundred polygons,VERY cheap looking. These do not look like a professional artist has worked on making them,i would not pay anyone to make that junk for my game.
The character gear/models also need more work, they still look old school, actually the more i look at the game, everything looks like copying older material from SW games,it does not look like newly created material by a 2010 dev team, more like a 2000-2004 dev team.
I find it odd because i know Bioware has the team to make better quality graphics,so i am at odds as to why they opt for graphics that rival their original SW game.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
It seems the game will have a good replayability value. I would try this game even without the jedi class and the star wars logo on the game. now I want to see the real deal: content and gamepley. I don't care about the graphics but content and gameplay.
Any class can use the cover system, just two classes specialize in it.
What's the difference?
Judging from the video, the cover classes can erect their own shields and use them for cover (they showed that a lot in the video,) I'll bet that no other class can do that, they'll have to find natural cover, and they might get extra bonuses from cover, extra places where they can take cover, or even special attacks they can use while behind cover.
When Darth Hater did a preview of the game, they said that their trooper was able to take cover behind pillers. If I'm not mistaken, the cover classes are smugglers and bounty hunters (or was it imperial agent? Can't remember...)

Interesting, it does look like their improving the graphics, be interesting to see what options there are to combat though, assuming that combat isnt the be-all etc, of the game that is?

Graphics look decent enough and can be tweaked until release and combat looks like it could be fun....
...now pair that with open world FFA-PvP, territorial warfare and a decent crafting-system and you have a winner.
Unfortunately it'll be yet another instanced themepark
You know it's no fun when you say that in advance.
