im a huge star wars fan, im 32, i grew up on it.

one thing overly dissapointing about this game so far is the look and feel from the gameplay. Im not into over realism but the character models seem to have no attraction to me at all.

the latest combat videos just makes me want to vomit.

so , just out of curiosity i am wondering what everyone else thinks of the graphics swtor/biowar is gonna put out. Personally, im teetering on not buying based on the character models alone, i mean , to me, they are just extremely ugly and the lightsabers literally look like a raver's glow stick...just not impressed so far. i just expected more from bioware's art department.

the landscapes look amazing, but the characters imo look horribly rendered and even more horribly designed.

curious on other's thoughts.

    Exactly my feelings....

I really want to like this game as I love star wars. But the human models are just so damn ugly and lame. I do not dislike all models, just the human ones. And the lightsabers uuhgggg.....dont get me started. Dont get me wrong, im no graphics whore, it is the artstyle i dislike. The art style of WoW i loved and it worked great with that game, but with star wars, no sir.......

see , wow was cartoony but it felt right. it's hard to explain but the swtor models are really just disgusting looking. im glad im not the only one who feels that way and yah the lightsabers , if i play the game, i'll definately roll non human and non jedi.

Graphics are tolerable to me. Nothing special, but nothing hideous.

I would vote for gameplay and playability over eyecandy, since it lasts longer. Beside you cant feel the game until you acually play it. So I will wait with asumtions until I test it. But I got a feeling its going to be good, patience is not one of my strongsuits but I guess I cant do anything about it. Just have to wait for beta or release.

How can GW 2 , FF14 look so good models, and swtor look pretty average and even bad? Its Bioware they should have what it takes to make animations and char models look as awsome as GW2.

That is limiting your options quite bit. I don't know if I would play a game which offended me to that degree.

They are doing Blizzard's thing - low specs to suit more PC owners.

The difference is that Star Wars was live action movies, while Warcraft was already an IP featuring toony graphics.

yah i understand and appreciate the honest and mature opinions. it's hard to to explain something just really bothers me abou tthe models. i waited forever and pre-ordered modernwaref 2 , pre-ordered warhammer and i think im taking a cautious stand towards games now.

alot of production companies are overhyping games trying to pull what they can for horrible products. no offense to star trek fans but that game is terrible.

with this one, the animations, models are so blatantly hideous from the start im worried about the gameplay. i enjoy my avatar i like customization. i want to look different and i want to look "unique". so far, the models have just been meh i guess.

I think if the graphics are making you want to throw up you need to get a doctors appointment.

Honestly though, I didn't like them. I still don't think there amazing, though I can see the style. There not bad, just different. It takes a while to get used to, but I can guarantee if this game has the gameplay its boasting, then once you start your first storyline, you may forget all about the graphics.

The only game I've ever played and stopped and thought about graphics was infact AoC. For obvious reasons. At times it was just amazing.

It's a smart idea on their part. Medium level graphics, gets alot more players.

The models are really quite ugly, but that alone won't stop me from buying the game, hopefuly they spent more time on gameplay than models.

    Currently playing: N/A :(
Retired from: GW, WAR, Aion, LOTRO, Rift, SW:TOR, Vinductus

yah, i agree in part but i don't need a doctor's appointment just having a discussion bout the graphics. if the gameplay is good i'll play if its enjoyable i'll play.

i hate teh star wars galaxies animations and graphics but the game was enjoyable to me.

diablo 2 graphics are snes looking but the game was still fun.

The whole combat looks so static.

They rave in interviews how they captured great action feeling, when all i see is your character being static doing wack-a-mole with few animated effects. (even though the effect might be flame thrower, or jetpack hover. Its still your character being on the spot, executing some skill over and over again)

Hopefully there will be more polish and the lightsaber skins will be worked upon untill it hits beta. Maybe there can be enough graphic options, that while not making it look not cartoony, will make it look good if u have a good PC. We'll just have to wait and see.

  • segynsegyn Member Posts: 234

I agree the models are not great but the vistas and landscapes i have seen look great for the stylized look they are using. Also atleast in this combat video the models looked different than all the previous ones we have seen before they all looked like teh same guy with different hair.  And a bit more detail. So they have actually improved. But char models won't stop me from playing a game i feel is going to be great. The though of the endless quest grind in games like wow and others being replaced with a personal bio-ware story system is what i have been waiting for in an mmo for what feels like forever.

I played Lotro for a long time and there Char models are horrible but the land is beautiful and the game is quite fun. other than that game no game has held my intrest other than FFXI which i would consider the best mmo out right now in my opinion. Yeah it had grind but the grind was rewarded handsomly and the mob grind was great cause you were in groups chatting and making friends.

I'm replaying Dragon age for the 4 th time i have already played mass effect 2 trhough 5 times and that is with the exact same story for every char well pretty much some differences as far as playing evil and good. But bio ware has said no classes story will be the same so i get 8 full bioware stories to play through that should be able to keep me plenty busy till they release new content and it seems like the world is going to be huge and tons to do.

So i do agree with the char models looking kinda awful but i agree with them going that direction for more people on more pc's being able to play. but what we can hope for is it really scalling with machines so they may look good on a high end system and bad on a low end system. I dunno my 2 cents of rambling on about not a whole lot. LOL

I love Guild Wars Artstyle, and when released was, in my opinion, top of the line for what it was doing.  GW2 looks like it will run on just about everything, for current casual gamers.

As to TOR, it does seem like the models could use a little ugprade. But the backgrounds, buildings, floral, and everything else looks AMAZING.  They character models almost make me think of a ingame webgame, just with much better animations.

  • maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,195

The non-armored models I think are strange looking.  The armored classes look awesome.  I think its the way they are trying to blend the art styles.  They are trying to keep the models clean and detailed, but they are also trying to capture the star wars type models seen in the previous games.  I think as development progresses, the models will probably be optimized to show more detail, but I think still see the blend of cartoon realism.

I think there is room for improvement.  I do also think we haven't seen everything they have to offer just yet.

yeah ive been a supporter for a long time but that video made me want to vomit just as much as you. this game truly is my "only hope" im having a really really really hard time swallowing this game lately but who can blame any of us for questioning a new mmo coming to the market after everything thats been released in the last few years. If this company doesn't pull through with his mmo i dont even have words to describe the feelings of giving up i will show for this "new" mmo genre. i like to think that video was something they recorded a year ago haha.

guild wars has a nice model look.

i thought aion had an amazing model render but the gameplay was just like everything else , typical grind. aion has great models pooor animation. if star wars tor has poor models and great animation it'll be nice , especially to be followed by hte story that is star wars.

just wish the models were not so cumbersome looking. k, you gotta admit the lightsabers look straight up retarded, i wont play a jedi for sure just because of the way they made them look.

    Same concern as I have.

The gameworld will be very nice looking, I have no doubt of that.

Characters look a bit bland. But what's more:

They look generic. And I REALLY wonder how itemization will either stress and confirm this genericness or break it and make up for it. This is a huge question in my mind. If you end up just upgrading your specific class based armor set & weapons again and again it won't cut it. You'll just be another *insert class here*.

I'm a fan of variety and loads of choices to make, appearance wise. I hope SWOTR will cater for this but I am kind of afraid that it won't.

I'm not sure I am buying that " low graphics for more sub's" story,  I mean come on WoW came out in a different era.  I think they are trying to stick too hard to the single player game as far as looks go.   Big mistake IMO,  It does not have to be AOC but they can do better than what they have now.

The thing I find amusing about this whole debate is that I have no problem with the graphics for TOR, but I absolutely hate WoW's graphics.

You can`t base your decision on what is early alpha, the game isn`t even being played yet. There is plenty of time to polish the models and such.

But if that is what will be release then i`m fine with that. While I do like at lease respectable graphics (3D), gameplay is more important to me.

Played WOW (5 years), AOC, AO, EQ2,AC2, Horizons, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, CO, STO(Beta),ROM, Allods, and many other F2P titles. Asl been in beta for many of the main titles and played countless SP games. I have been gaming for 15+ years!

all this talk about....its just in alpha,  I dont buy.

its a professional company, and the kind of things they showcase you must consider pretty much the end result, even if rest of the game aint made ready yet....its a commercial for the game, a proffesional company doesnt just show something, to show their progress just for nothing.

besides this supposed to be the most expensive MMO coming out...should think they would make a top of the hill game, both looks and gameplay wise.

but will see, you can ask me to cry over this post when released n they suddenly got the best graphics ever seen ;)

Well I don´t know about this game but developers usually put in a more basic graphic version while trying the game in Alpha/early beta. This to ensure that no more strain than necessary is put on the computers. I´m guessing they are more interested in lag, abilities and general gameplay as those things can really hurt a game while graphics is no more then a nice extra bonus.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

    I like it.

I'm going to compare it to the Clone Wars series because most of us have now accepted theres quite good episodes in that. Their art style for that has almost 'box' like areas, like Anakins nose. However you then have things like the clones, in their armours. They look very nice.

The same goes for this game. You see a jedi in starter gear, they look 'bleh'. Mediocre. Then you see the same jedi leveled up, wearing a jedi robe with or without armor. They look so much better. I love the fact that theres physics in this game. Like when a jedi is blown back with the force, his robe blows about accordingly. As for the lightsabers, I think they are going to be glowy when launched. I think they were just toned down for that video, or maybe thats a graphics option we'll have as players. Speculation but hey, what else can we do?

I have to admit I really like the design and look of the Republic Trooper's armour. Very cool looking.

The sounds are spot on aswell. You'd be surprised how much that matters in a game.
