"Throwing hardware" at the problem clearly can help. Having more CPUs gives you more options in terms of distributing the load of the server side operations. The "limitation of the game" us how effective it can be in distributing that load among the CPUs available, but I doubt anyone on this forum has enough knowledge of the Unreal engine and Atlas to address those limitations in full. EVE supports "the ridiculous numbers [Thorpeyrox is] spewing", so there is not NO WAY (i.e. there is a way) to support those numbers. Again, that depends on proper distribution of the computing load and while I hate to say it, I think Hercules is the only one here even vaguely qualified to address that (though his expertise is tangential)
Thanks for thinking of me
Throwing hardware at the problem *can* help in certain circumstances. I don't need to understand the Atlas product or Unreal engine to make that analysis, but I'll explain to you how it has to work logically. Ultimately, servers only gobble down data and do math. The database in the backend does all the work. It shows the position of a character (versus another character), shows the environment around a character, etc.
We are talking *big* money to get a database clustered properly. It requires huge boxes on the front end to do the logical processing, it requires VERY fast storage (RAID 1+0 with 15k Fiber Channel Drives, or even SSD) to do this as well. Every time you add a server, you have to basically "buy" another LUN on your SAN. Since StarVault doesn't own a SAN and they have offsite hosting, they are obviously leasing a SAN from their ISP. The ISP doesn't charge nothing for SAN usage, especially to double down on a database cluster. Lease costs aside for the storage, and costs aside for the hardware, there are also network costs, maintenence costs, etc. StarVault is out of money and time, and putting together a proper database cluster takes a good deal of time to do it right. If you expect that they can get the hardware installed, racked, set up, configured, and then clustered with the existing database in a week or two, you're sadly mistaken. It's a month+ project at the least, and that's with people who are intimely familiar with database clustering to ensure that the transactions that occur on either cluster member don't screw up the storage device (like double writing things, deadlocks, locks, etc).
Either way, I wouldn't count on new hardware making any impact here because the timeline is simply too long, and the expertise far too deep for SV's team to handle.
1700? So much pre-ordered? Damn they are lucky. This game will disappear in 2-3 months max. They will not make any profit and therefore they will bankrupt.

Incase you missed it. There was 13k pre-orders, which is quite a bit. If anyone thinks that these people who preordered are not going to play on launch day then you are sorely mistaken. I would go as far as to say we will see around 10k if not a little more on launch day.

Thats laughable...
11000 of those people purchased WITHOUT seeing/playing the game. Only 1700 out of 107000 purchased AFTER seeing/playing. (see page 1) To assume most of the people that preordered actually like the game is delusional. Guess you missed all the refund/charge back posts.

It is amazing how much hype and marketing sells by itself. Promises have value I guess

In point of fact, the pre-orders were after the combat beta. Several people had played the game (or the portion that was already in). And anyone who wanted to see the game had plenty of in game footage to look at.
"All the refund/charge back posts" represent how many people? Admittedly, we don't know how many people did so without posting about it, but at most 50 or so people posted their intent to do a chargeback or get a refund.

Im guessing you are talking about the 10 or so posts total that people asked for refunds. I would go as far to say that there was 100 or little more that charged back. Even IF 1k charged back that would still leave the same 10k I spoke of earlier. To use this point is a drop in the bucket. At launch the server will max out. I am more worried about it not being able to handle the mass flood of players more then I am the number of people who decide to play on launch day.
For anyone to say different is just blind. There are TONS of guilds/people who have been waiting for live. Even if someone left during beta because of questionable stability/gameplay they will sure want to come back and check it out to see if it has changed during the free month.
I think you'd argue if a turd was brown if it invovled MO.

Wonderful... Assuming it is true, then what? The game cant support more than a 1000 people.

ROFL.. I got more than 50 PMs on this forum and the Mortal Forums thanking me for the info on how to do a chargeback. I firmly believe the reason they shipped the Boxed version with the useless DVD on it was simply to be able to say they sent something and defend against the barrage of chargebacks they received.
Again though.. it doesn't even MATTER at this point. The game launches in TWO WEEKS!!! Let's focus on release now. If the game somehow launches with all features working, additional content, no desync, no lag, fixed AI pathing, and balanced skills/combat/items then the game will survive.
If it doesn't.. it will sink.. no matter how many people did or didn't get a refund.

How many have they sold total? How many do you think they will sell in the next 10 days?
Under 15000...
Not sure why anyone would buy MO atm. The current build isnt doing well and many features are still disabled. People with real interest have already purchased and those on the fence will wait.

I remember when Maerlyn said they ha to sell at least 30,000 copies to keep afloat... What ever happened to that?

Ive heard they need 13000 monthly subscriptions, total sales would only help in the short term. One can only speculate how many of the current total sales will actually play and continue with MO.

I would say less than 20% will keep paying a monthly fee.

Well look at the sales before and after people had a chance to try MO during the Open Beta. It doesnt look promising.
