Theres a big difference between letting people just pvp out in the world and having an actual reason to pvp out in the world (territory control, Keeps sieges).
Im sure they will have contested areas but we've heard nothing of an actual reason to fight eachother other than being the opposite faction.
Yeah, and WOW has open PVP play and it has instances. And the bulk of its PVP occurs in the instances due to how the reward structure is set up.
Maybe it will be different in this game, but that is not the way to bet.
WoW does not really have open PvP outside of PvP servers. Vanilla has none. BC has a few zones where you can flag yourself to participate. WotLK has WG and a few things over in Grizzly Hills.
There is almost no reason for level 80's to participate in any of the world PvP outside of WG, and even that is to be able to run VoA.
Will be interesting to see how the "daily quest hub" and PvP works out in Cata, or if too many people cry about it so they pull that as well.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

That is a key thing not only to PvP, but even to PvE...why are we doing it? For fun? Just to pass the time? Does any of it have any actual meaning or effect on the game world?

Agree totally. Never understood why blizz didn't allow the conquest of those contested areas. Give a reason, whatever it is. It will be a bigger reason to fight than hold a flag and score a point.

Well the 2nd expansion created contestable PvP areas with benefits to everyone in the zone. As to the battlefields having a conquest....think about how many of those battlefields are happening at once. How would you determine who won. Teh battlefield are quick and simple version of their Warcraft game with your character. it has its good and bad points just like open world PvP does. Quick fun is high with no real loss for defeat....as opposed their open world pvp which is ganking which leads to 50% of the people having fun for no real gain for winning.
