I think most posters in this thread look through rosecoloured glasses at their favourite old MMO. Their first MMO love so to say. I really think you should make the distinction between the general community in a game and your guild that you were part of for a long time.

My experience is that players who are involved in the same guild for a long time tend to see its games community as above average, while that same community can be simply hostile towards new players at the same time. You see this also on game's forums. You have the regulars who respect each other and new players who get flamed for the simplest of communication mistakes.

I think its similar to communities outside games. Ppl are friendlier with people they get to know (similar to guild in game) and are easily offended by strangers (outside guild).

All MMO's have idiots in their community is the answer to the OP's question imo.

    Worst:

    1. WOW - no comment

    2. Project Entropia / Entropian Universe - real money transfers both ways make ppl behave on their worst

    3. Aion - it might have been bad luck with the server choice, but it was one of the most childish, annoying communities ive seen in a MMO, it was so bad i ( even tho i admit im not the biggest socializer in mmo's ) ended up making a one man org to avoid any contact at all with rest of my server

    4. Age of Conan - while i had no issues with the communities on the pve and rp-pvp servers i played, the community on fury (  eu-pvp ) was one of the worst ive ever encountered

    5. War - i only played this game as a break from others, but it felt very immature to say the least, lucky for me i was playing with 2 friends using vent most of the time so i had minimum contact with the community, might be biased by a unlucky server choice

    Fav MMO Community:

    1. Anarchy Online, Atlantean-RK1:) - while like each mmo community its not completely asshatt free, but overall its a very mature, friendly and helpfull community, and far from a kid1, i would believe the average age of an ao player will be either gettin close to 30 or slightly above it

Games previously played: AO, AoC, Aion, AoW, Eve, SWTor, WaR, STO, TSW, DCUO, FE, BP, ProjectEntropia, FootballSuperstars!

    This.

    People tend to say.

Person XYZ his favorite MMO XXY = best community

But at one point most people are right. PvP games attracts the scum of the scum.

Out of the games i have played i have to say Age of Conan on the tyranny server closely followed by WoW, burning blade.

AoC was just bad man, you'd think people being unpleasant would be kids, but no, most of them were in their 20's and up. Just constant trash talk and insults in global chat and tons of people just trying to make each other's game as miserable as possible.

The game was great but by the time i got tired of the community i was near level 80 and couldn't imagine starting over on another server, so i just stopped.

There are many games that tie for 2nd place for worst community, with WoW having the #1 spot all to themselves.. Now they can brag about having the most subs and the most @ssholes at the same time.. KUDO's Blizzard..  Current games that I've played that I have positive comments for is LoTRO community, and EQ1..  Both communities had very helpful chat channels, and there was less insulting in general then most games..

The one thing I miss the most is the old school EQ1 days.. We the community policed ourselves for the most part.. In EQ1, if you started getting a bad rep because of behavior, you were black balled to teach you a lesson.. and it worked..  Back in those days, a persons character was more important then his/her gear..  I don't know how many times I've witness the worst behavior in a MMO while in WoW..  Example:  Tank with a 6,000 GS , 50k+ Health joins a pug, and ninja loots something valuable like an epic recipe, then leaves the group after people confront him saying "FU Noobs" on his way out..  You take this up with his guild leader if this conduct is something the guild promotes or discourages..  In conclusion nothing happens in the end.. and why?  Because that tank knows with a 6K GS and 50K+  health he pretty much calls the shots, and the guild leader needs him for raids more then addressing the jerks attitude in game..

Games that focus so much on gear, end up losing control of the community..  A player that has ALL the best gear is like a celebrity, and just like in real life, they end up getting free rides on bad behavior..  Who do we blame?  the community or the developers that design the game mechanics?  OR both..

Of course, but there are also always demographic differences, sometimes quite significant ones. It may not even have anything to do with the game itself or its target audience—just the variation you're bound to encounter between multiple large groups of people. Even if they're choosing between Lily Cole's left or right breast, you might find that one group significantly prefers Pepsi to Coke....

Put it this way, only dying games with declining population or near no player population, you'll see SOME players putting in an effort to not be nasty to try to welcome more players, and even then there will be players who remain nasty regardless. Take the inverse of this and you will have your answer. This theory isn't 100% accurate, there are exceptions to this general rule as some are gonna post specific games next, but 95% of the time this holds true.

    My experiences:

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
