With the many faults currently plaguing MO (see other threads), and with the poor finances of SV (near bankruptcy), I have to ask everyone how long they expect MO to last before the servers are shut down. Though one could expect fans of sandbox games to overlook many of MO's more glaring issues if it were the only of its kind on the market, the simple fact is that it is not, and if everything advertised by AV is correct, Darkfall will likely become a top grade game by December (introduction of prestige classes, enviromental sounds, complete graphical/performance overhaul, complete revamping of pve and dungeons, heavy additions to alliance/guild management, boxed release and online distribution announced on sites like steam, etc. etc...).
If this occurs, I find very little reason to believe that MO has a chance of surviving long term. However, I am curious what everyone else's stance on this is so please vote accordingly.

If you want to poll peoples opinions, please feel free. Unfortunately, the whole premise of this poll is speculation and I must say biased speculation if you expect Darkfall to become a top grade game. Even if it irons out all of its issues, the fact that it is FFA PVP with full looting will make it remain a "niche" game for quite some time.
P.S. I'm not sure how Darkfall will become a top game if it is (as you yourself said) filled with people who dupe gold in games they don't even play. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/3580784#3580784
Well, DarkFall Online is really not doing great from what I hear and the population is decreasing day by day...Yet there was much more hype for it and much more players than Mortal Online. Also it was richer, had 100x more content and deeper PvP and stuff to do in general, PVE and Quests.
I doubt MO will make it past 1 year...
It never ceases to amaze me how the sandbox folk complain and complain about a lack of games appealing to them to the point of it getting utterly annoying, but when a company comes along that tries to give them what they want, they do everything in their power to grind the game to dust. Whether that be forum smear campaigns, sensationalistic polls or the like.
See this is where people are going wrong, they are looking at DF and MO as they stand now, instead look at DF as it stood at a month from launch
it was bug ridden, full of haxxors and griefers, teh forums were full of whiners and crying.
MO will be fine, they are attempting to build a lasting game rather than a quick buck fest.
Look at the icelandic model, build a game with the foundations in palce, then build on those, instead of knocking up a wall thats hollow on the other side and falls over.
face it, you dont like this game, we accept that, but do you have to keep forcing it down our throats with stupid threads and polls like this?
Opinions are like butt holes, we all have one and they all stink

Well AV made have taken six years to design the concept for their game and what they want it to do, then created a game engine that would allow them to do it, but at least they had the makings of a fresh new PVP MMO on their hands. DF was released a bit raw, but it foundations upon which its built are solid and strong, unlike the out dated crap unreal engine that has a tendency to make textures and the world created with it look bland! It was also a engine never intended for MMO making with large scale of palyers online, it's meant for small scale online fps.
You forgot to mention that at the end of the year Earthrise should be released. If the devs dont fuck it up and give from start on teritorrial control of areas then it will be real competition towards DF
I voted about 6-12 months, if they dont improve the game that should be realistic time frame.

this poll is trash, everyone of you people post the every new MMo is gonna go off line , I can name on one hand how many went off line...So this is a trash poll.........
I love how people like you always state a game is gonna fail because that person doesn't like it, and they preordered it , my advise to you , stick to xbox live, or WOW, because it seems thats is all you like, yes I said it go back to WOW..
People like you prolly ruined WOW to, so since you did go back to that trash of a game.. and Stay there stop spreading lies on these forums people are sick of it.. Better yet stop gaming all together , you prolly got owned and looted and wanna come here to cry and say the game sucks.
I heard this for 7yrs on Darktide on AC1 yet the game is still around and online.. I love this crap polls...
Us gamers don't ask for so much, the problem is big companies release shitty MMOs because they only want to please the 10 year olds and introduced shitty concepts such as instancing, instant travelling, ingame maps and all the shit that makes it way too easy and linear.
Those small companies like AV or SV come with fresh ideas but that doesn't mean they can make something good out of them.
They have good intentions, good will, good ideas, but lack the experience and professionalism to deliver a worthy product.
What we need is a big company working on a big sandbox MMO and use their knowledge and experience to turn all those fresh ideas into a real good game.
Really SV is a bunch of amateurs who had no idea what they were doing and were aiming at waaay beyond their abilities.
And why the hell a big company should give a shit about the small market of sandboxers? If there werent these amateurs who try to create a sandbox the sandboxers would stop hoping for next sandbox which catches the spirit of UO.
Bioware dev statment : " Creating good skill gain system is too hard"
WAR40K dev statment : "Give me at least 1 million players from WoW playerbase and ill be happy"
Sorry but i think you are a bit blue eyed if you hope that in next 10 years a big company would make a sandbox game.
Hell even the next MMO of CCP isnt a sandbox ....

I wouldn't be so sure if I were you...All you need is 1 very good game with good marketing and you have the job done.
I heard that "The Elder Scrolls Online" was being developped by a team of 100 devs as we speak.
EverQuest 1 was imo a sandbox game and had lots of subscribers.
IMO when a company like SV fails so hard delivering a good game that has a big "SANDBOX" label on it, it only hurts the whole concept of sandbox as people will really have a negative opinion of what it truely is.
Yep you got a valid point as a bad try to create a sandbox can hurt the whole concept of sandbox. I agree with you on that.
About Elder Scroll no idea, didnt hear anything about it. Would be completly new that they would plan to make an onliine game.
EQ 1 = sandbox? Maybe it had sandbox elements but i would never call the game sandbox.
Korean grind + theme parc mmo = EQ series
Just my opinion about EQ series :P

Dude, did you ever play EQ1? I mean the REAL EQ1...the one that came out in 1999 to 2001.
The one where you were totally helpless as a noob, where mobs would outrun you, where you could die to anything, including a vendor that would kill you if you attacked him accidently. The one where you had to run for miles, and where players would gather in the EC tunnel in the Commonlands to trade their goods. It was very sandbox if you think about it. Not entirely but quite.
It had nothing in common with Korean games, I think you are talking about EQ2 in this case.
EQ1 was so good because it had a bit of everything. It was really well balanced.
You made a pretty big mistake here. You assumed MO was a sandbox. It's not. At most I would say it's a box with sand with no tools.
A sandbox includes those tools.
APB feels more like a sandbox than MO.
DFO and MO both missed the mark on the sandbox idea pretty wide. For some reason they assumed this meant OMGPVPFOCUSWTFBBQFULLLOOTFFAPVP. The problem is PvP in a sandbox is just one of many aspects of a sandbox.
When MO becomes a sandbox, you will have a point but for now it simply isn't so you do not.
I would rather say that MO is a sandbox without any sand at all...
This thread is ridicolous. CLEARLY you love Darkfall, and this is an advertise for Darkfall. Stop flaming other sandbox games. MO is MUCH more complete than when Darkfall first arrived. Start flaming me, but first admit that this is just an advertisement..
MO got the same problem as DF. They give you a box but no sand inside it. And besides that they both focus too much on PvP and dont give other options to do.
For me a sandbox game is a game which offers you a lot of actions to do like :
Want to hang out with poeple in a tavern? You can do it.
Want to write a poem? You can do it.
Want to kill some people? You can do it.
Want to do a dungeon and get some loot? You can do it.
Want to become the most famous crafter in the game? You can do it.
Want to creat a uniq town? You can do it.
I could go on a lot more ...

HAaa..haaaaahaaaaahaaaaarrrrrrhhh...I played DFO and left after 3 month and I don't like it either, but to say that ...OMG...what a sad community of deluded players that the MO one...Regardless of how bad DFO was, it still had 5 huge continents, the world was like 10 times the size of MO's and more since you have seas and oceans with underwater caves and you can sail the seas. Everything in DFO was hand modeled and designed, they even had their own homemade 3D engine to handle the seamless world.
DFO had like over 200 types of creatures with tons of cariety in loot. DFO had named mobs, dungeons with bosses, quests, real NPCs and a combat system that actually worked.
MO has a tiny empty world with 1 dungeon that is bugged, nothing to explore, and a combat system that doesn't even work.
its terrain generated and the devs can't even optimise their textures and don't yet know how to make the UE3 work properly...
How the fuck is MO more complete than DFO???
1 huge continent and 4 islands
And still most of the world feels empty and barren in DFO. Seize isnt a feature if the 3/4 of the world is empty / barren.
Their 3D engine isnt that good its ok, but it could be better and thats why im not sure about that, but i kinda read that they are overhauling the engine for DF2010.
And btw wasnt DF the game which was kinda 14 years in development over all?

I haven't played either game, but it seems to me that certain MMO companies seem to be incapable of separating the distinctions between pvp and sandbox.
From my own perspective a sandbox doesn't HAVE to be a FFAPVP game. It can be consensual. And this is one of the reasons why, in my own opinion, SWG Pre-CU got it right where others went wrong. You will never have complete 100% freedom in a sandbox game, there will always be some restrictions no matter how small. You cannot get away from that.
The point is, it is futile to make sandbox games based solely on the FFAPVP ruleset, and just think that's all that is needed to keep people happy. Even I, can appreciate that fact. Even Eve has more than that with its hi-sec areas, crafting driven economy and its grindtastic agent missions.
Its all very well saying "don't look at it now, look at how it will be in 2 years time." But to paraphrase an old saying, time and MMO players wait for no man. If MMO devs fail to deliver at launch and they spend longer than a few months putting those missing elements into the game, then the product will begin to bleed players quite quickly.
In short, don't promise what you cannot deliver. Don't label something which it is not. If you cannot deliver the VERY basic elements that define the very nature of the product, then don't try to kid your playerbase. It will bite you in the ass.
Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
I wasn't really defending DFO. But you gotta admit the graphics are beautiful anyone saying the contrary is dishonest and no the world of DFO isn't empty...empty of players YES. But there are loads of buildings, forrests, campments, dungeons, ruins, hamlets etc all over. Its not just a flat terrain with moutains and a few trees.
And who care if its been in dev for 14 years, all I'm saying is that the guy saying MO is more complete than DFO is just out of his mind.
Afk macroing, duping to the extreme and the huge character grind combined with a pointless city system that isolated groups of players to themselves is killing DFO. The graphics are very nice and easy to appriciate, the dungeons and pve is pretty meh to be fair though. There´s a lot more to MO´s terrain than flats and mountains too you should of explored more.
What a poll .... Seriously, it's like when some haters here for several months said MO will never release ... it's a fraud.
Now it has been released and lots of people is playing it and have fun doing so. Some that complained two weeks ago on MO on the MO forum ... now want to subscribe due to that lots of things is fixed on every patch. It improves every week and will continue doing so and people have tons of fun. I am sure that we within a year will see some of these haters here playing MO and praising it. Those of the haters ... that will be allowed to play, not the baned people.
MO is doing good. I also saw that SV is employing more people.
Nothing but speculation, and some Darkfall propaganda, all wrapped up in a trolling post.
MO actually has had a pretty good start. Not perfect, but not bad either, and it will provide a different experience from Darkfall, which is a very, VERY good thing.
Meanwhile, Darkfall continues to flail about, desparately trying anything they can think of to stop the bleeding, and it still isn't working. Darkfall isn't really a sandbox, and the changes will continue to push it further toward what it already is - a skill-based GvG themepark with an insane grind and ganker/griefer-friendly flagging rules (and the worst community imagineable).
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
APB isn't even an MMO in the traditional sense, let alone it having a sandbox feel - it's a "style over substance" lobby game, and an excruciating repetitive one at that. In truth, APB has more in common with a game like Star Trek Online, though STO probably has more, and more varied, content than APB.
Having said that, MO right now is the core of the game, which is what they promised one year ago would be available at launch. They do need to add more tools to the box, but then again, that's the direction they are supposed to be taking, and the game is set up to support it better than just about any other fantasy MMO available right now that isn't named UO.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
When you guys say that games like MO and DF are not sandbox, what do you mean by that? Simply because they focus on pvp is not a sandbox? You can RP if you want, interact when chatting with other players, acting like you are William wallace with the claymore of pure ownage, make your own story, kill some mobs because you feel like it, explore a dungeon because you feel like it... You got the point.
If both these games are not sandbox to you, then dont tell me that by lack of sandbox content, you mean lack of quests to do or stuff like that. Sandbox games got no instance meaning that they are support to encourage players to get togheter and play in the same world.
Last thing, think of the word sandbox next time you wonder if a game is sandbox or not. Go to the park near where you live and watch the kids playing on the sandbox. Who bring the tools on the sandbox? The kids. How do they use their tools? With their imagination. Same goes with Mortal online and darkfall. You guys better take back that sandbox feeling before you ask for one.
