It's really just a matter of style and not a matter of hardware.

LotRo has realistic graphics and does run really well on low-end systems.

A lot can be done with realistic textures, to compensate for low polygons.  Look at The Sims 2 vs Sims 3 - they decided to cut back on realism, yet the game has much higher hardware requirements.  TS3 also failed to hold a lot of the fanbase that liked the realistic textures of TS2.

Obviously not an MMO, but I think it makes a good example of how even the most "family friendly" games benefit from realism, and yet devs seem to think otherwise.  Spore is another EAxis  game that could have been a classic, if they hadn't mistaken their target audience for five year olds.

Seems like some devs, especially suits who run things but don't play games themselves, think cartoonish styles broaden appeal - but I think it really has the opposite effect.

There are always some proponents of childish graphics, but I've always hated those people.  Even when I was a child :p

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I kind of totally agree with the OP.

Not only are they childish in look but also in what you do in them and how you do it.

Co-op is really not an option for example.

I read somewhere that one of the reasons for the great success of WoW is that you can solo all of it...well at least until the end-game...

So I guess that is what WoW is. 12 million kids running around soloing things and occasinally dropping some L337 sp33k...

Guess thats why I still play Neverwinter Nights...

It's all about the money, not the public.

    - Low end graphics = basic 3D engine

    - no or little content

    - Item-mall

    And there...

Your MMO aimed at 10-12 year olds is ready. As if anyone checks or can check the player's age. So it's no wonder these crappy MMO's are popping up everywhere like mushrooms.

I wouldn't say that WoW for example has low end graphics and a basic 3D engine. It is a very well programmed game and conservates the computers power. Sure...it is an old game...and updating a world where 12 million people are "living" in is probably not an easy task...so that is probably another reason that it is not exactly up to par.

Wouldn't strech so far as to say that it is low end graphics though.

Also on the content side it is kind of packed.

So it is not that....it is something else...

    I disagree,

Some games are groundbreaking, like doom, which spawned thousands of copycats, like command & conquer, which spawned thousands of copycats, and yes like Wow. They all want a piece of the pie. And for the MMO type game, they do it like i described. Low graphics, little to no content, and a camouflaged casino aka the itemmall.

just install ANY of these crappy F2P MMO's. You're bored out of your skull by level 5.

This is getting kinda off-topic ^^ so i wanna clarrify, I made this topic to express my confusion and concerns not about the existance of cartoon-like childish games(and by that i dont by any chance mean WoW or FF or whatever NORMAL games out there), but about the NUMBER and poppularity of them. More and more of those games keep popping out of nowhere. And i m not just reffering to the completely cartoonish graphics, but to the whole gaming experience that only a child would enjoy (and thats fine by me, at our age children shold probably have their own gaming market), though it's a well known fact that many adults are not only playing but are addicted to those games.

And just so i'm not misunderstood again, i'm reffering to games like Yohoho! Puzzle pirates, and Wizard 101 , or hello kitty or wonderking.

Cartoons render faster than realistic graphics.
    .
    This reduces lag.
    .
This is one of the reasons WoW has so many players. Lack of lag.
    .
SWTOR has cartoony graphics too, the SWTOR people said it's a style they were goin for but I think they did it to help the games performance.

Lets all come back in five years and you can tell me if GW 2 graphics are still good, and then look at games like WoW and ToR.

I happen to like cartoonish graphics in my MMOs.

So true haha.  I've never been one to judge a game because it looked like a cartoon.  A good game is a good game, regardless of looks.

^agreed. But, sometimes I get suckered into playing a crappy game because of looks. Actually... not sometimes, a lot of times. xD

I think some of them shouldn't even be on the list. One question that comes in mind though, is who votes so much for these games? are there really so many people playing those? do they have such a big community ? It's just confusing for me

Puzzle PIrates has been around for years. It's both very popular and very studied within the industry.

Wizard 101 is a new indie game that has also become very popular among tweens and teens.

Hello Kitty Online is an obscenely popular IP that appeals to kids and many adults alike.

It's possible your confusion just stems from the fact that you're not the target audience.

its not about the graphics that makes the gameplay (im addressing the WoW x Aion issue)

when i was playing Aion i felt like im playing a different WoW with different graphics, i was expecting something new, it turned out the same failure as WoW so im waiting to see a trully original game, like DDO - it has its own mechanics and thats really cool, i quit, because it was really restrictive to players like me who wouldnt pay a pebble for the game :D

and those new childish games are all the same to me - you mindlessly spend hours in "collect this, kill that" i played one or two and it sucked.. im just skipping such a games...

if Japanese ppl think such things are "kawaii", i think otherwise "hidoi" i have a great idea for game mechanics.. i will look around the forums for a place to share it with you :) so i say "NO!" to childish games, i dont care if the graphics are not shiny..

i want to see a game with WoW's level of graphics, but with a more realistic art, not that goony cartoonish art WoW has >_< i want to see some original and unique content, which i dont and grind.. grind, you back to Korea, there is no place for you here

Same here, i m about 22. It's not just that I don't stand them, it surprises me how poppular and overrated they are. It seems just few years passed after MMOs birth and not only the gaming industry got f*cked up, but the gaming community turns out to be worse and worse as time passes by

I'm 29 years old and I seem to like the graphics in most of the games that have come out. Aion, AoC,  SWToR ,

Meh, not a big wow fan , i don't like war graphics really either.

Not sure what to think about the new ff14 game coming out either. GW2 looked good.

To be honest, those realism graphics that you keep hailing as good graphics, are what is outdated and low quality /snooze graphics is what I would call them.

I hope you don't think SWG graphics are good, I'll laugh my coffee out of my nose. Outdated is outdated. The new graphics that are coming out, are coming out because people like them, they are colorful and enjoying, as oppose to dull and depressing. Get it?  Well, when you reach my age you will understand. Certain colors and sounds are depressing. When I log in SWG , which i haven't in some time, I am really depressed by just the sounds and the low quality of graphics.

    I agree with you OP

the funniest (or is it saddest?) part is that actually those kiddy animu games are aimed at 16-20 year olds and thats exactly the kind of demography that plays them.

I made up my mind, definetly sad, not fun....

I don't Know about you but when I play a game , I play it to have fun. Now I already been to college, I already got my degree in Computer Science and I have put it to good use.

I understand , we have some college students out here that want to feel like they are intellectuals or something to that effect. That's not what the majority of adults like me want. I play games to escape reality. When I get stressed I can log into a game and it brings out the kid in me.  I don't want to log into a game and feel like I'm going to a second job or whatever have you.

People play games to escape reality.    It amazes me that people come on these forums and complain about the advancement in graphics and want to bring games back to the late 90's era. I bet half you kids didn't even play the first 2d games that came out. I am a vet of one of the first (nexus TK) and I wouldn't pay them a dime to play that game now.

If a game is gonna feel like a job , I don't want no part of it. If I log in and I am depressed , I don't want to keep playing.  There are games out there for you folks, just go find them and play them. No dev team is gonna put out a game for a select few people and then lose money on it. Doesn't make sense.

Funny how people come in here and try to pretend like they know what every adult wants.

    very simple actually.

most mmo players are Asians and that's what is very popular down there.

also a cartoony character is much easier on your pc instead of a very ditailed real looking character ( like AoC has).

Don't think we were really referring to Aion, and GW2 and those "cartoony graphics" atleast, not IMO..

i was talking about Mabinogi, and Fiesta, and pretty much any other super asian, horribly designed game that has come out from korea.

Ah, there ya are. Yea those are cartoony , but then you gotta realize those are cheap f2p games or at least I think they are.

They are gonna have some real crappy graphics, so they just go with what they can throw together and still be able to run on those crappy servers they have.  You get what you pay for, and when you go with companies like Nexon, who has been doing this for years and still cannot manage to put out anything decent or up to date, you are gonna get garbage.

You gotta look at the big names. Square Enix, NcSoft, I'll reluctantly say blizzard, but there are a few more. Funcom, EA... These are the major companies that have alot of money to work with when it comes to making their games good.

Of course it is all opinionated. Some people may like that style of game play. I thought maybe they were trying to take a jab at  swtor or something and run that old tired Sandbox arguement.

Yea, good thing about those games you are playing OP. It is f2p, and they expect that the people that are gonna play it probably don't have the best pc, and they probably don't have the time to make the game any better than what they did.

If you got a beast computer machine with the best graphics card and quad core processor 3 + gigz are you gonna want to play some korean game called fiesta?

  • just2duhjust2duh Member Posts: 1,290

I'm 23 and long as a game is fun and has some deep character development, I really couldn't care less about the graphic style.

But over the years it's become almost a rule of thumb to avoid them now, since they are ussually (not always) "dumbed-down" and don't offer the options I require from my rpg's, things like attribute points (stats) for unique builds is a must!
