The sooner we get rid of this 'cartoonish = childish' mindset, the better.

If they came out with a really in-depth, fully functional, excellently crafted, and other things that i feel are needed in my gaming funness~ crafting, balanced pvp, non-cookie cutter character builds. I'd play the cartoony graphic game. However, as long as those things don't come with the cartoony graphics, i'll stay away. Very far away.

That and i hate joinning a guild, and everyone is like 12, asking for items (as i said above)

you guys gotta realize some of these asian games. They just throw something together as fast as they can and try to get as much money out of it as possible with a very low budget.

It's like when you go on ebay and see some cheap item made in china. Example, a cooling fan for your processor. You buy that thing and its real cheap , but how long will it last before your processor is fried because the fan burned out?

I made up my mind, definetly sad, not fun....

I don't Know about you but when I play a game , I play it to have fun. Now I already been to college, I already got my degree in Computer Science and I have put it to good use.

I understand , we have some college students out here that want to feel like they are intellectuals or something to that effect. That's not what the majority of adults like me want. I play games to escape reality. When I get stressed I can log into a game and it brings out the kid in me.  I don't want to log into a game and feel like I'm going to a second job or whatever have you.

People play games to escape reality.    It amazes me that people come on these forums and complain about the advancement in graphics and want to bring games back to the late 90's era. I bet half you kids didn't even play the first 2d games that came out. I am a vet of one of the first (nexus TK) and I wouldn't pay them a dime to play that game now.

If a game is gonna feel like a job , I don't want no part of it. If I log in and I am depressed , I don't want to keep playing.  There are games out there for you folks, just go find them and play them. No dev team is gonna put out a game for a select few people and then lose money on it. Doesn't make sense.

Funny how people come in here and try to pretend like they know what every adult wants.

you are totally right, this is funny shit indeed. because I also went to college, I also have my computer science degree and I have been working as a software developer for 4 years (Im 27).

but unlike you I simply cannot stand kiddy crap. I could when I was 10, when I was 13,and even  when I was 16. not anymore. just like the rest of friends I made in school, in high school and in the university.

if a game feels like a job, I dont play it. i agree with you here.

But if a game is fun but treats me as if  I am a 13yo anime babbling retard I wont play it either. I rather play a game where my intelligence isnt offended by some cutesy gfx and setting clearly aimed at hooking pre-teens.

if for some reason that game didnt exist I'd read a book and wait for one.

Funny how some people in here tries to tell us that you can be a mature guy with a college education and still like the teletubbies... if you were a centh as mature as you wanted us to believe, you yourself would have known that shit like that doesnt fly...I cannot explain it, but that simply doesnt fly.  aging and maturity are very related, and what you liked when you was 14, you wont like at 24, you'll look back and say "hehe, god, I was so naive and immature..."

and when you actually reach the point you claim you have reached, you'll see this evident truth also.

anyway this isnt stuff that should worry you now... go play with your hemans and your chibi MMOs and let time pass...

i like cartoony graphics.  =P  but i don't like childish cartoon like games.

Are we meaning games like Super Hero Squad where it's all based off a kids cartoon or a game like WoW where they use stylized art to make the game more accessable to a wider range of hardware?

Because if you mean a Super Hero Squad type game, it's probably due to developers looking to tap the younger playerbase (well, more like mommy and daddies credit cards...)

If you meant stylized art like in WoW, that type of 'cartoony' graphics/look does age a bit better than a game with photorealistic graphics. Also by making a game with low graphical overhead, more people using a wider variety of hardware can access and play the game (which if you haven't noticed is one of the reasons WoW did so well)

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

It honestly depends on what kind of games we are talking about here. Are we talking about the f2p anime garbage like fieste? Or are we talking about  aion, AoC, SWTOR, and games of that nature?   I don't play any f2p games, and I definately wouldn't play a game like fiesta.

If we're  trying to sit here and say that games like SWG and Fallen Earth have good graphics and are not completely boring and depressing, than sorry but I have to disagree with you. After all this is my opinion. To call games like Aion and other games as such , childish. Well , than we are all big kids I suppose. Most serious adults don't play online games, unless of course you are like me and have a lil geek in ya.

Whatever the case is, you should probably go back to school because that post you just made... didn't really do ya any justice there.  How about this. I will play what I want, and you can play what you want. If I want to play Swtor when it comes out, I will. If I don't want to play sandbox games, I wont.  Is that good enough for  ya? You do have a degree in CS, why don't you and some of these other guys get together and make your own game just the way you want it?

You don't even need a graphics card to play the game if you have a newer montherboard.

You 're right about that, but WoW may had those kind of graphics but it was a REAL game, had a great storyline, had much content, and although i do not like it, it's a great game for it's kind. I was reffering to games like

Yohoho! Puzzle pirates, and Wizard 101 , or hello kitty or wonderking. And there are tons others like those. Do you believe they deserve their ratings? I think some of them shouldn't even be on the list. One question that comes in mind though, is who votes so much for these games? are there really so many people playing those? do they have such a big community ? It's just confusing for me

Have you played a game like Wizard 101? I tried it out just on a whim and it's surprisingly fun for what it is. I ended up playing it for a while, usually when I only had my laptop with me and I wanted to play a game.

As a game aimed squarely at kids, they go out of their way to make sure that kids have a fun, safe, engaging game to play, and it's intuitive enough that their parents can play right alongside them. Its ratings are well deserved when you take the game in context. Sure, it's not a traditional MMO like, say, EVE or World of Warcraft, but for what it is, it's pretty good.

I can't help but laugh when reading these posts. I'm 38. Neither of you had even been born when I started gaming. You're both far too young to play the cynical old gamer card.

Relax. Realize that there are some games that are going to be made for kids, and some for adults. And realize that game developers try to make their games for the widest possible audience because not everyone can afford to upgrade their PC every six months to show off hyper-realistic graphics.

Artistic direction, animation and design must come together to complement the game setting and story.  The setting matters a lot - more serious setting usually cannot handle stylished realism or cartoony art as well as more high fantasy setting like WoW or SW:TOR. A good example where a serious setting is very well backed up with artistic direction is The Witcher 2.

Also, cartoony does not always mean "childish". That is absolutely rubbish and usually an opinion of very narrow minded individuals, or perhaps just lack of exposure to approriate material.

As a parent I can tell you games like Wizard 101 have been a God send for me. My daughter is not ready for a real MMO and these fill the gap rather nicely. She usually loses interest after a short time and since these are F2P it costs me nothing. Keep these F2P Kiddy games coming!!

I actually quite liked the features of fiesta.

Fiesta has Raids starting at level 5. o.o

Who cares if you can group to max level in wow.  You can raid to max level in fiesta o.o

And isnt mabinogi a sandboxy game? So I wonder why not more people from here play it..

Anyways! As for why there are a lot of asian games that use those "childish cartoon-like" graphics...Beause people there like them o.o MTV was actually running ads for ROSE online when it was coming out.  As in the hosts learning to play ROSE online so its really not childish there o.o

    Ediit :

Also, these f2p mmos coming out have some reallly awesome systems...like soul master (pikmin style) and dungeon empires and other stuff o.o

Some of them are REALLY overrated and I do not understand why. Are they so poppular?

I don't get it either, except that maybe because they are FTP.  So every kid from here to Timbuktoo can download it without mommy or daddy knowing and then get all their friends playing it at school...or...I don't know, I'm just guessing really.

Might have to do with it being cheaper to make cartoony graphics as opposed to realistic.  It's almost to the point, that I wish MMORPG.com would make a FTPguru sight so we can separate the 2 types of games.  But then...they would have Lotro over there so...oh well, nevermind.  -_-

Heh , you need to get used to it , since it's the new trend since WoW.  Apparently no one cares for realistic graphics. Hint : Maple Story / Minecraft.

If the game is fun , graphics goes out the window , as it should.

Making a fun realistic MMO is asking the impossible. It cannot be done since devs are on a time table and if everything goes into graphics , as time have shown us , we end up with a shitty release.  Hint : AoC.

Enjoy your cartoony MMO's , because they aren't leaving any generation soon.

kid market is always the most profitable one because they are stupid 100% and you cant really deny it. They are easy targets for money.

P.S. have you see the amoung of 13 year olds in the internet? its growing very fast...

Anyway cartoony graphics arent that bad because they are usually smooth and not sluggish compared to overly realistic graphics where the character needs 1 second to finish a simple animation and during that second you have no control. And it doesnt feel nice to have 0 control over your character

Kids are just more easily pleased, yet kids have no money to pay for anything, only spoiled kids fall into what you're saying. I've also noticed as of late many parents are cracking down on how much net/game time kids get. Parents certainly were not like that while I grew up. Looks like the parents of my generation are going to be a little more hands on than in the past, if my friends that are parents are any indication, we know what it leads to to not be.

Cartoony graphics are just one facet of stylized graphics. Look at Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic, GW2 fanboys like to bash SW:TOR for its "bad" graphics, and SW:TOR fanboys like to bash GW2 by saying it will require a real beast of a PC. But as a matter of fact, they are both wrong. SW:TOR and GW2 will probably have the similar requirements because they are on a similar graphical level, the only difference is the art style, and I think that the art style is a reason why people think GW2 has got better graphics than SW:TOR.

Unfortunately, most companies are to greedy and cheap to hire artists and in that way you get all your MMORPGs covered in cartoony graphics.

  • fivorothfivoroth Member UncommonPosts: 3,916

@ OP, it's childish to think that cartoon-like graphics are childish. I am not a child and I love cartoon-like graphics as they are more creative and are funnier. Plus they are easier on your computer and age much better than realistic graphics which are crap in about a year or so....

The fact that you are all making some generalisations about the age of someone playing certain games means you're all CHILDISH! For example, look at the below post.
