That should be their parents' choice not yours. As someone said, in games with teen ratings this souldn't be a problem.. in kid rated games I would agree. Also operationalize "kids". Especially in modern MMOs I have heard the terms kids used for anyone under 18.
You have the right to be what you want in this life, if your gay fine. But when i play a fantasy genre MMO i dont need to hear about your sexual orientation in the game. Censorship only happen when peoples abuse the system.
Its not about that its about acceptable behaviour whether it be in a video game or in real life . Its not about dealing with 12 year old kids its about giving them some guide lines . Nothing will ever stop teens calling each other gay because they feel the best form of defence is attack when it comes to thier sexuality but it should be banned in a video game .
How do you feel about them calling each other Jew in a detromental way ? Thats happening a lot too .

To me it looks like a damed if you do and damed if you dont scnario. If a person posts it in chat in the context of hate language then the individual should have something happen to them. However is it not easier to to just add it to the filter.
On the other hand if it being used to describe some one that is happy or used in situations like guild promoting ect then why not let it go. This might be an example of a situation where it might be reasonable to turn of the filter in the preferances (if its an option)
Either way someone is going to be angry about it.
The freedom of speech argument has always amused me since it's been filtered in mass media since radio.
Regarding that openly gay guild in WoW. If a guild only accepts homosexuals and not heteros, it begs the question who is discriminating who. In the end it's not worth the trouble since most people don't log into an MMO to be confronted in any way with those dilemmas but to relax.
And that's why parents shouldnt let their kids be babysat by video games and should be involved with them (likely the same parents who are complaining about video games ruining the minds of children). Games like Free worlds and Wiz 101 have language filters and limited communication options for a good reason. Games can be great learning tools for children, with parental guidance. Games like WoW would have the kid from Christmas Story tasting Dove till death. And is that Tim Curry in your Avatar? .. if so Touche'

The Jew issue is just as bad, but you don't see the word JEW being filtered so they can protect Jews. It's the exact same issue. Jews are a group of people. And the word Jew is being used as an offensive derogatory insult to some at the same time. Filters should be an option. But words like GAY or JEW should definitely not be filtered in my opinion. Saying that a filter like this is for protection measures is ridiculous. People need to learn to use the reporting systems or learn to protect themselves.

WOW some seriously old fashioned views going around here. Any company that bans discussions about homosexuality in the year 2010 is very fucked up. Any homosexual person taking offence to being called Gay is seriously fucked up. Would a straight guy be offended if he was called straight? No. So why would a gay guy take offence to being called gay?
If someone who was gay took offence to being called gay then they are the one with the problem as they obviously see being gay as a negative thing. Otherwise they would just say "thanks yes I am gay, your point is what exactly?"
If a games company is anti gay then people that are gay can just boycot it after throwing small thermo nuclear devices through the windows of the companies HQ.
Anyway this whole thread is retarded. I have never even heard of any MMO being anti gay. I think the OP is hyping something up. Making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Most games have gone way over the top with their 'Profanity Filters'. The only words that should be filtered are actual swear words and thats it. If you can't say it on prime time TV than it should be filtered other than that, no. 'Gay' and like terms should not be filtered at all.

If the devs of any MMO were to block every word that could be used in a derogatory way then most people would find it extremely difficult to communicate. The problem here isn't so much about freedom of speech as freedom of choice. With certain swear words that now exist solely as insults I can understand them being banned but the word 'gay' has just as much meaning outside of being used as an insult. Why should people be unable to use the word correctly just because some immature teenagers like to abuse it?
Banning derogatory terms is pointless anyway as the people that were inclined to use them will merely find or invent a new word to use.
All this does is stop people from using the word correctly, to describe a sexual orientation (and no people that is not the same as talking about sex) or being happy. The idiots that abused the word will only move on to another and abuse that instead...
Also those of you arguing about how kids shouldn't hear the word... if they're a teenager they would already be well aware of what homosexuality is, and if they're younger than that then they shouldn't even be playing the game in the first place!

Your question is the answer. If you run into a bunch of openly gay people in a clan, and you kill them in the game, chances are you will send some PM's about how you killed a bunch of homos. And there you have the problem escalating. It only causes more trouble. BAN IT !
