Really are we that bored that we have to bring this up yet again? Not liking someone for their skin tone or sexual preference is outdated. There are so many more reasons not to like people. Drug dealers, drunks, criminals and other ilk those are people worthy of our disgust.
Sorry Spanky, but this is where I chime in with some South Park wisdom and tell you that "it's either all ok to say, or nothing is".
The word "Jew" is also used all over the place in the same derogatory fashion, and it's not likely to end up censored either. I don't even think you should have to be Jewish to be able to say it, unlike being black and using the N-word, but being 1/32nd Jew myself, maybe I'll choose to blow it out of proportion the next time I hear it.
"you can't use that word! Only [we] can use that word!"
This is one of the few things i agree with GTwander about. Either filter all of it or none of it you cant pick and choose what you filter and hide behind some bullshit excuse that you are protecting (insert race, religion, sexual orientation, age group... etc. here). It doesnt work like that you cant pick and choose what you are going to filter and let things that blatantly fly in the face of your policy for one group be fine for another. One thing is definate it doesnt matter who you are, your race, religion, sexual orientation, whatever, eventually and most likely sooner than later you are going to get made fun of on the internet.
Many games, especially ones geared for younger players, also filter out words like suck, blow and even acronyms like omg and wtf. I guess the moderators simply want to prevent certain words from being used in a derogatory matter or spammed excessively. I understand this completely.
In most games the language filter can also be turned off.
A lot of well meaning people dress up in knights armor to champion what they percieve as victim groups. But last time I checked a homosexual man or woman is just as likely to use the the phrase; I am gay as they are to say: I am a homosexual, infact they may more often use the word gay.
When you want to blanket the word gay as bad and have it banned from use, you dont help anyone least of all the gays out there, because inadvertently you asign a negative association with whatever the word - when it hits the ban list.
Words are powerful but when you can't ban thoughtless, mindless, simple, narrow minded, insecure, insensitive, immature people from mmo's you have to either sacrifice language or accept that not everyone will use language as a tool for tolerance, inspiration, information and general banter, but that some will use it anyway they can to phrase small thoughts from small minds.
freedom of expression must be protected, and its up to you, to not give people the power to offend you in such a way that you would butcher our language to stem the tide.
Which in any case, has never worked, and will never work to any effect other than give you a false sense of security and peace.

Gay is not a dirty word!
