There are allot of guys who play female toons in mmorpg ((mostly men online role playing girls )) but I have never met a female who likes to play male toons in an mmo they always go female
Men typically want to look at pretty things, where as female want to look cute themselves.
I think women (generally speaking) consider the toons/avatar/character is either how they want to look or perceive themselves. While men do it for several reasons, want free stuffs, want something other than another man to look at all day...
I play about 50/50 male/female toons. I like the figure, voices, sounds, animations and general look of the female toons in games.
Also, there are many times in which the female toon is a smaller target or harder to see. So there are advantages built into the gender in many games.
Women are far less visual than men. They don't seek to look at men as much as meen seek to look at women. It comes down to the idea that they relate better to the toon. That connection to the toon makes it more appealing.
Its because men know that they will encounter a lot of desperate guys online and by pretending to be a female they will milk them as much as possible....
I personally used a Female mule for Bazaar shops all the time and sold a lot more as i did before with a male mule selling the same stuff at the same spot.
Its sad really but thats how it is(not saying all r doing it for this reason but most r)
ps. did know a couple females playing males only for the purpose of cratig there dreamguy lol
For me it depends upon the concept I have for the character. Some concepts work better as females than others. Like the people who play fighters that are gnomes or something. change of pace.
I like to play fighters as female types. I just find it fun that the person doing the tanking and taking the most damage is a female character that is smaller than most of the players who are in the group. Either that or I have some Red Sonja concept going. Or I might have just watched another Angelina Jolie movie. All of which have strong female roles. It is not always for the sex.
At least one time I know it was because I forgot to select one and it randomly came up female. hehehe
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
I don't have a problem with playing either, however, my friend always brings up the same reasoning when people ask him why he always plays female toons. His answer? "If I'm going to have to stare at someone's butt as I run around all day, may as well be a female one."
As for females playing male toons, no clue! I know quite a few that play male toons to avoid being harassed, but I know just as many that play female toons without issue.
Aion for example, all the characters looked effeminate to me, males and females. Even if I were to RP a man-loving man, he'd be a bear, so I had only female toons.
In CoX and CO played some of both since you can make them look great either way. Absolutely love seeing my 5 foot magical/mutant Super Strength female characters knock people over buildings.
In AoC I mostly have male toons, but mainly to fit my choice of non-super powered barbaric types, I had to make them physically huge. The muscular females there still didn't look like body builders to me.
In TR, I only had male toons. They were all so uglyfied in the face, I went with ugly dudes.
In SWG played mainly a twilek female cause they're hot omg.
I don't know the answer to the second part of your question.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
Those guys are sad and desperate for something female to look at, end of story. Serious gamers arnt worried about what their avatar looks like so dont give me that shit

You must be delusional. Look at all the games that do not have appearance tabs but their forums are flooded with requests, look at the games that implement them, and look at the games that only charge for customization/vanity options...... If that statement you made were true none of these things would exsist.
The guys who do this are sad, but not because they are 'looking at her butt'. That's just an excuse. It's more like they are cross-dressers, but just online where it's safe to do so. Nothing wrong with it, but I do get tired of their constant denials, they protesteth too much.
Those guys are sad and desperate for something female to look at, end of story. Real gamers arnt worried about what their avatar looks like so dont give me that shit
I consider myself a real game and I care allot what my toons look like...well as long as they don’t look like a juggalo :P
As Mike B said, sometimes I roll male toons just for a break in games. Not that I get harrassed much on female toons, but I get "treated" to all kinds of chivalrous gestures that I could do without. No-one likes being followed around by someone intent on "helping" them do stuff they can do perfectly well themselves. Some male players can be kind of patronising that way, and it irks me, whereas I'm sure some other female gamers might enjoy it.
There are also games where I'll roll a male toon because they can look hellaciously cool, like in Fallen Earth where I spend ages messing about with facial hair, piercings, tattoos and facepaint to make the scariest-looking hardass possible.
The gender of a toon means nothing to me really, I don't assume female toons are played by females, or male toons by males. I just make a character that looks cool and then go and have fun with them. I can tell you though, the differnce in how you're treated in-game when you play a male toon over a female toon is striking - that'd be an interesting topic for a thread.
TBH, My first female character was in UO. Because a female player in my guild was talking about how guys were always hitting on her in game.
I started a female toon so I could run around and say "d00d! I am a guy, you are hitting on a guy in a game!!! WTF? You think all female toons are women? Stop harrassing women in game and let them play!"
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

Well I guess you wouldn't mind playing as a carrot or a sack of shit I guess. There is a reason why donkeys and pigs are never as a playable race in a game.
Free stuffs. Closet crossdressers irl. The *want* of wanting to watch your own pixel characters ass all day. 1% of the time the look of the female class suits the class the dude wants to play better.
"We got rid of the trinity." How'd you do that? "Now everyone can heal." Sounds like you just took the mechanic and spread it thin. "Well no, there's one class that can do it better than others." I see, so they're healers. "No. They're.." -mind asplode-
The only MMO's I've played as a male character are the superhero ones; Champions Online and City of Heroes. Every other game the male characters just look awful so I end up creating a female character instead. It's not only restricted to MMO's either, games such as NeverWinter Nights 2 I thought the male characters looked bad so I made females. If I had to guess, it'd be because the graphic designers are all male so put more effort into creating nice looking female toons then throw a few pixels together for the males.
Seriously, male toons just look awful in the vast majority of games.
There are allot of guys who play female toons in mmorpg ((mostly men online role playing girls )) but I have never met a female who likes to play male toons in an mmo they always go female
I actually know a few females who play as male toons because they don't like getting hit on all the time as once a guy finds out that a female is actually behind the female toon they start acting like it's the dating game as opposed to whatever mmo they are playing. Now having said that the numbers of players playing mmo's is certainly not a 50/50 split between men and women, I'm fairly certain men are playing video games and mmo's by a wide margin to females so obviously the number of men playing female toons is going to be much higher than the number of girls playing as men. At the end of the day though what difference does it make underneath the extra few pixels females get there is no difference between a male toon and a female toon.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I think it stems from the fact that most females who played with dolls when they were younger don't play with ken dolls. How females played with dolls/action figures/toys if they ever did makes a big difference. Plus we relate more to female characters, whether it be in books, movies, or just life style. Plus females usually want to portray a certain image when they make a character whether it be male or female. I for example rarely play male characters unless I get tired of not being taken seriously, or sometimes I just don't like how the guys look. It's easier for me to deal with playing a bad looking female because I don't really care, then a bad looking male. Other females think it's plain weird and gross if females play as males, my sister for example. IF I play a male character she refuses to associate with me, because it makes her feel uncomfortable. Which brings me to the most important factor, I think females take online interactions more seriously in many ways. If we develop a clique of friends we get pretty defensive when others butt in, we more often then not try to be as close as we can to who we really are, or we feel guilty. We may lie about our age, weight, ethnicity, but who we 'are' as a person aside from that is as close as you are going to get to how we really are, even if we don't realize it ourselves.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.
For me, it depends on the class I choose to play. I know several other women, who like me, don't really care about the sex of our characters.
I prefer female toons if it is in a leather/medium armor class. Males for cloth/light armor/cleric roles. Heavy Armor is both. There is always an exception to the rule but, overall the above is what I prefer.
Lately my mains have been guys. No, I dont care about staring at his butt...Nor, do I wish I was a guy. It's just a character in a game I want to play.
I would much rather stare at the backside of my female character all day. I don't run around acting like i'm a female, all my friends know that I'm male and my avatar is female. But that's just my take on it.
Serious gamers arnt worried about what their avatar looks like so dont give me that shit

Depends really on the person.

The female toons are more visually appealing.
I play about 50/50 male/female toons. I like the figure, voices, sounds, animations and general look of the female toons in games.

@OP: possibly the same reason why you see far more 'adult' magazines in stores directed towards the male audience than the female audience.
On average that kind of visual stimulation works better for men than for women.

I think a lot more female players play male characters than we suspect, but not to the same ratios. It is just overshadowed by males playing females.
As Mike B said, sometimes I roll male toons just for a break in games. Not that I get harrassed much on female toons, but I get "treated" to all kinds of chivalrous gestures that I could do without. why would i want to look at a male char all day when i can look at my female char.
