What it is… is a Freudian power issue. Men want to control, domineer and direct the female species.
Of course given the choice over telling a boring man what to do, men are going to pick pushing a voluptuous woman around a 3D world. Telling them who to kill and how to kill them.... Require that they stand at the bank and carefully budget their inventory (no! you can’t keep those shoes muah-haha!). Mandate that they forsake safety for revealing chain-link thongs. Demean them with woefully begging to trade plat for cleavage peeks and carrying on perverse conversations they wouldn’t dare attempt over their iPhone.

…actually why does it even matter? I play male and female characters. I like looking of female chrs, and become more attached to them as a “story” then male. It’s fun to play an attractive kick ass girl. I don’t know if there is a wrong answer on this one. Though maybe some creepy ones
I think I can see both sides for women, some women might like to play as male because of a book/movie character they like or identify with. Some may play a male chr to avoid the crap that can happen to a female character. I believe women mostly play female chrs simply because they don't get hung up on things that men or teenage boys get weird about, and female characters look attractive. If you consider AoC's chr creator, how many women would give their male or female toon a broken crooked nose?
I aksed my friend this question, why do you play female char, his response "cause i don't want to stare at a guy's ass for 60+ levels"....... seems fair enough to me.

I'm sorry but that just isn't good enough! It wasn't good enough as an answer 8 years ago and it isn't today!
At least thats what methinks due to the fact that these threads have more lives than a bag full of cats.
Butt... I would concur with it being a fair answer.
I always play male characters cause I am a guy. I'm not a cute girl. Just like I have a hard time watching tv shows with female leads, I feel no association.
I like women I just am not one.
for those guys who say 'If i am going to look at a character all day i rather it be a girl". I dunno, I play male characters all the time and I gotta say I don't stare at his ass for 6 hours. I look at quest objectives or mobs I am killing. Occasionly I admire how cool my armor looks.
I had a friend who in EQ1 played a female character and never told anyone, and he got all sorts of tells from guys obviously wanting to be more then friends. I dunno how that didn't weird him out.
On the plus side like other people said, he would get all sorts of free junk in game.
Oh and there really needs to be a "package" slider for males in games since women get breast sliders. I'm tired of all my guys being flat in the front. I'm no glistening six pack guy with pecs of steel, but I'm not flat like Ken.

Yeah, those who don't think the "I don't wanna stare at dude ass" isn't an acceptable answer, need to get used to dissapointment.
Topics like these are completely subjective, and each and every single answer is complete and correct in its own right.

On a side note, people who constantly complain and ponder why a guy would play a female character, are probably not 100% comfortable with their sexuality. I have no problem playing female characters. Maybe I don't like the art associated with the male toons for the game. For example, I'd much rather have disproportionately large breasts, than say shoulders/arms, the female will at least still look human, whereas the male starts to look like a gorilla.
Alot of these threads get started by people who try to play a female character, and then give up after a while because it makes them feel uneasy, like soembody might thing they're gay or something. A phenomenon that doesn't occure among older more mature players who are comfortable with their sexuality.

Seriously hate the fact that every couple of months some one gets busted thinking he is going to pick up on this gamer chick only to find out it is a guy in the RW.
Then he gets all offended about guys playing chicks in games. Now he wants to start some holier than thou conversation about why men need to play women in games.
It is a game. When you stop using it is a troll booth to pick up chicks you will not care if the keyboard matches the screen. The other person is there to play the game not act as a love interest. Really need to get over it, go on with your life and enjoy the game and the comraderie.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

I think it'd be nice if people could have a discussion on related issues, such as, oh I dunno, why women rarely play male characters, without anything even remotely related to this turning into an argument about guys playing female characters.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
well , i played a few before. It just depends on the way the female toons in the game look. I played a male in aion, then i realized that half the female toons were guys anyhow, so I decided to roll a female toon. I'll be honest here. I would rather look at a hot female toon all day than a guy toon. I pretty much just make a toon and call it my "bitch" , not that I want to roleplay a female, but tbh it has consequences. It is awkward in groups, and people think you are a female sometimes. I really don't like that. I try to role male toons as a main character though.
In war I made my decision based off the dark elve showing all that cleavage, but then again after you get in the game and past the character screen she looks like crap anyhow, so it doesn't matter.
I actually met a female in SWG that played a male toon. Not sure if she was a lesbian or if she just wanted to have a male for whatever reason, probably so people wouldn't stalk her.
I think a lot more female players play male characters than we suspect, but not to the same ratios. It is just overshadowed by males playing females.
Wow, I can't believe it took two pages for someone to point this out. We DO play male characters, but generally we don't advertise it, and even when it is, people simply don't seem to care as much as when it's a guy playing a female character.
That being said, the reaction of my guild the first time I hopped on Vent (my character in the guild was a male tauren warrior) was priceless.
A friend of mine played male characters sometimes for the same reason I played female characters sometimes. We each had favorite character names from various things (novels, shows, etc) through the years and it just seems wrong using a male name on a female character, and vice versa.

Plus female voices in games are usually annoying as hell. I don't know how they hit some of those notes when they die. It's like a dying mouse.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

this is very true. Especially in Aion. Use to get very pissed off with the all the female toons in the group yelling and moaning and shit. It was really annoying, i had to turn the sound down or off most of the time and I hate playing a game with the sound off.

I'm sure a lot of females wouldn't mind if they had back story for that kiss. Like if those two guys really really wanted to be together blah blah blah insert boring romantic crap. Females like that stuff. The kissing is irrelevant as long as the reason for it is pure hearted. Whereas for guys, they are visual and really don't give a damn if they chicks started kissing after mud wrestling or a drunken night. It's all the same as long as they can wank off to it. -_- (yes I know some people don't fit in these two groupings but it's true for the majority) It's why so many girls like twilight, because they want to be loved unconditionally. Your characterisations of men and women are exactly why there are so many misconceptions and generalisations about gender differences. There are many people from both genders that could fit onto all the pegs you set up for people in your post.
Your saying "yes I know some people don't fit in these two groupings" is just a way for you to say what you want while thinking you have left room for other things, even though you will still go around making assumptions about both men and women based on their gender. There are substantial genetic differences between men and women, just as their are between races, but they are not nearly as profound or a universal as some people seem to think.
What I really worry about, though, is that you are a female making a generalisation about why girls like Twilight. You make a very specific assumption about why girls would like that story, (For the record, I cannot stand it, if not for the terrible writing and the thin plot, for the vampires.) but the sort of girl that would actually want those things would be a pretty terrible person in my estimation.

My theory is that guys are ugly, just look on us.
But it can also be that the female clothes often are better designed than the male ones.
Anyways, it is just a game, don't try to overanalyze it.
I had a case of NWTSAAGA (not wanting to stare at a guys arse) syndrome after playing for ages in DAOC. So in my next MMO I played a woman.
