I don't have a problem with playing either, however, my friend always brings up the same reasoning when people ask him why he always plays female toons. His answer? "If I'm going to have to stare at someone's butt as I run around all day, may as well be a female one."
As for females playing male toons, no clue! I know quite a few that play male toons to avoid being harassed, but I know just as many that play female toons without issue.

If I wanna look at a guys physique, all I gotta do is look in the mirror. If I'm gonna spend hours upon hours over the course of possibly years starting at a butt, I'd rather it be female.
I know plenty of gamer chicks with fat boyfriends who play guy toons just so they can look at a decent male physique.
"If I'd asked my customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse." - Henry Ford
There are allot of guys who play female toons in mmorpg ((mostly men online role playing girls )) but I have never met a female who likes to play male toons in an mmo they always go female
The simplest way to answer is that it is the same reason why it is fashionable for two girls to kiss each other on the lips these days but definitely not for two guys.
Another way to explain it is playing these MMO's there are two ways to look at it: (1) you ARE your avatar and play it that way or (2) you are controlling another being, your avatar, but you are not it. Guys play females because of (2) as it gives them control over a female, which is not unlike some of their RL goals or desires (no offense intended to anyone). On the other hand, I don't think it is natural for a female to have the same desire in life to control a man's actions, e.g., many women admire men who are the type that take control of a situation and/or take care of them. I acknowledge that gender roles are changing all the time and not all women feel that way so please forgive the generalities but I am only trying to provide some psychological reasons for these choices.
I've never rolled a female toon that lasted more than a couple of hours. I think the whole 'i've got to stare at polygon ass to be happy' excuse to be creepy enough that their picture should show up on the local sex offenders website.
I like to role-play and I'm not naive enough to think I can RP properly as a woman. Have you seen guys who RP women? My girlfriend is always offended by them. "We're not that slutty. We're not that emotional. We're not that bitchy." Is what I hear from her constantly and honestly watching films and reading books I can say NO GUY 'even the most effeminate little tart' can portray a woman properly.
Now just having a skin on an avatar in a game that you're playing just for the sake of playing the game; it doesn't matter. In CoH/V I think if someone was brave enough to hit on a female toon, then they're hosting more mental issues than you can shake a stick at. Also in WoW, I never understood the guy who'd come up to a bloodelf toon and go. "Ur hot." My lady always replied... "Just like the other 10 million bitches that look like I do. Go wank urself."
I think a lot of women see their avatar as an extension of themselves in the gaming world they plan on getting lost in. Why would they do so as a man? Other than those times when looking like a male toon is just cool.
As a previous poster stated; my girlfriend has a couple of guy toons in City of Villains just to fit her 'I got a cool idea' notion. She never plays them, but they're there. Also she really liked the male troll toons in WoW, she actually played him. But she missed the old troll female models that got changed into the generic crap they are now.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
I'm kind of shocked this far in I'm the only person to point out that we probably outnumber women in games like 2 to 1 which makes anything we do far more pronounced. Having said that I have never had a problem with playing a female in game (and it sure has nothing to do with being a closet crossdresser) I'm totally secure in my manhood but when I was told by some ladies that running around as a lady get's them special treatment I certainly looked out for it but I really have never come across that much, in fact I don't even remember being asked by a random stranger if I was a female or not. Now when grouping I have had some people ask me if I was really a girl and I would never lie about it so it usually ended there but generally I'll have my female alts in my guild but obviously everyone already knows I'm a male in those instances. But really it just boils down to numbers men in mmo's are legion and I think most women will tell you that they will probably hide there true sex in game more than men do.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

You're probably not acting in a way that sets off that whole protection gene thing males have going on. I have yet to not get something or be hit on within 20 hours of playing a game. But then again I am a very social player, I strike up conversations, joke around, and am very open. Therefore I usually get asked more often then not. It's a lot like in real life, if you are a female in-game and seem unapproachable and don't want them to talk to you, they usually won't. Unless they are weirdos...
Also I think the percentage is actually equal if you think about it. There are just less females so of course you run into less females rolling males. Also you have to remember, never believe someone is a female unless you hear their voice. It's a lot easier for a guy to pretend to be a young female due to stereotypes, however if you actually 'speak' to an adult female and male there is very very little difference in how they will say things.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

The guys who do this are sad, but not because they are 'looking at her butt'. That's just an excuse. It's more like they are cross-dressers, but just online where it's safe to do so. Nothing wrong with it, but I do get tired of their constant denials, they protesteth too much.
Or it could be those people who are so hung up on what people play who have ulterior motives.

How come a lot of guys like to watch two females kiss, but a lot of females don't like to watch two guys kiss? The answer is different genetics, the way guys think and work is different from the way women think and work. There is no necessary overly complicated psychological explanations, the sexes think different, act different, work different.

And another good point you make the females I've gamed with are far more friendly than I am.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm a musician and happen to meet alot of "party girls" but that's not true I know plenty of women who would like to see two guys kissing. And while I agree it may be more common for men to want to see that I think it also goes with saying that women are much less likely to seperate sex/love/passion like men do we compartmentalize that stuff in two seconds if we think we can get a rise out of someone or someone can get a rise out of us.

Because women are sexist pigs who have no empathy whatsoever
whenever I play any mmo, I always pick the male avatar. some one mentioned that .. maybe you like looking at some dude's ass all day running about., but I say .. hmm.. " I really have a nice ass.." you see I don't see the character I create as another person, I see them as another extension of me within that fantasy world Im playing.
in the end its just a game. there's no right or wrong as long as you're having fun. as long as your not stalking some minor or any unwilling participant to your little sick games. >.<

Well, there you have the difference that says it all:
- when women pick a male char, one of the dominant reasons is because of to avoid harassment
- when men pick a female char, it's because of something cute or sexy to look at
Also a larger percentage of male gamers pick a female char than the percentage of female gamers picking a male char.

And another good point you make the females I've gamed with are far more friendly than I am.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Give me liberty or give me lasers
Caster Characters usually are Female, Physical DPS(Ranged or Melee) Characters tend to be Male. Least thats how I generally choose gender.
And old topic is old.
whenever I play any mmo, I always pick the male avatar. some one mentioned that .. maybe you like looking at some dude's ass all day running about., but I say .. hmm.. " I really have a nice ass.." you see I don't see the character I create as another person, I see them as another extension of me within that fantasy world Im playing.
in the end its just a game. there's no right or wrong as long as you're having fun. as long as your not stalking some minor or any unwilling participant to your little sick games. >.<
