Is WoW the best mmorpg game?

WoW (World of Warcraft), has too many features to name and is popularly played. But, is it the best game currently running?

First: be sure sandboxers will disagree , which is normal as they prefer a different genre of MMO by default

Second: to my humble opinion it is ... unfortunately

Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt.
Among those who dislike oppression are many who like to oppress.

As others will, I'm sure, state, "Just because it's the most popular doesn't make it the best."  It's all opinion.  In my opinion, it isn't the best I've played.  It's good, but not the best , at least for me.

Also wow is awful for mass pvp / rvr and alot of us look for that in a main game.

Asking this question will result in a thread where the intensity of the arguments will crash the servers.

"We got rid of the trinity." How'd you do that? "Now everyone can heal." Sounds like you just took the mechanic and spread it thin. "Well no, there's one class that can do it better than others." I see, so they're healers. "No. They're.." -mind asplode-

I played WOW intensly for just over two years, I burned out on it and will not return. Having said that I voted yes due to many factors that im sure will be brought up in this thread very quickly. Im not a big fan of Blizzard but all in all yes WOW does more things right and all things they do, they do better than any other MMO ive played. The only thing I can think of done better in other games would be the graphics but then WOW is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

    Edit for grammer.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Change the title. MMORPG- massively multiplayer online role playing game. No need to have game twice.

WoW IS a common contender for top 5 or 3 or 10 or what best mmorpg games.

IMO it is the best game available. Doesn't mean I play it though.

I burnt out on it. That, in conjunction with it's aging graphical engine and Blizzard botching my account ensured that I didn't go back, even when I tried out of boredom.

I'm hoping that GW2, FFXIV or SW:TOR can offer me something fresh and take over the mantle.

WoW is too simple and unoriginal to be the "best" at anything, because by its nature, just about all of its features have been done better by other MMOs, mostly older MMOs.

If there was a game out there that was as big and accessible as WoW, it would be the fabled WoW killer. So I guess what I'm saying is yes, it is the best in general.

  • lethyslethys Member UncommonPosts: 585

Although it kills me to say it, WoW is the clear best MMO right now excluding graphics.  The reason for this is that everything in WoW has a certain amount of polish that every other MMO lacks.  The zones are completely filled with quests and instances on each level and area, the LFG system is great, the 25 man raids are repetitive but they work.

There haven't been major problems in WoW since literally a few months after release.  BC was implemented into the game flawlessly and I can't say the same about Lich King only because I quit before it.

And don't get me wrong, I did not have fun in WoW, but I can still say that something is the best even if I don't like it.  For example, I simply don't like Company of Heroes but I can admit that it is one of the best RTS games.  I had more fun with Guild Wars personally, but there is just a lot less content and the two aren't very comparable.  It will take a major release like SWTOR or TERA or Rifts: Planes of Telara or maybe GW2 to dethrone WoW as the best.

WoW isn't really that big in scope. A lot of older MMOs, and some new ones, totally trump it in size and sheer number of things to do. The only thing WoW has going for it is, the Blizzard name and the massive marketing budget that comes with that, and good timing.

I voted yes after thinking  about my current favorite game aion.  I Would have voted no if aion would have put more efford into some of there npc models but that breaks it for me.  Wows pve is just to good, when you start out with and theres nothing really like it.  Besides aion no mmo goes over the mill mark for subscribers so theres really no other games to compare it to.

High subscription numbers doesn't automatically make a game better. I guess we can just throw out all the pioneer MMORPGs like EverQuest, DAoc, AC, UO, because none of them went over a million. But oh wait, WoW wouldn't exist without EQ, because WoW is just a toddlers version of EQ.

     Must....not..... get..... pulled.....in....

But sorry, how exactly is this an argument? Even if all it's features have been used by older, even more simple and outdated games?

You're entitled to your opinion, but that's like arguing that the Formula One car isn't the best car in the world because they didn't design wheels, rubber, oil or the combustion engine.

What WOW has done is combine and refine features that other games had, as well as refining their own content . They're put together the best MMO package available currently. It's not for everyone, but feature for feature there are very few that can compare, no matter compete.

Of course, "best" is a subjective term, but if there is a better game out there, please let me know..because I've been trying to find it for the last 2 years.

I didnt consider the 11.5 million subs when voting on this. I voted yes for your other statement though, 1-60 in WOW was the most fun ive had leveling in an MMO. I was the poster boy for altaholic. Dun Morogh was facinating for me, I had dwarves and gnomes everywhere at many levels.

What WOW has done is combine and refine features that other games had it didn't combine anything, and refine is a polite word for gut a feature and leave the core addictiveness and little else. In older MMOs I could do a quest, walk around a town, talking to NPCs. I spoke to a town Crier who told me a scotsman in the castle had work for me. Go up to the castle, the Scotsman sends me to a forest to hunt down a wolf. I don't know where the wolf is, or what the reward is. I wander through the words, paranoid about where this wolf will be. Eventually we come into conflict, I win, return to the scotsman, and he makes me a cloak from its hide. In WoW, I run to the glowing "!" skip all the text, run to the glowing waypoint, kill the wolf and run back. I don't understand how anyone can even play that, because at least older MMOs DISGUISED the tedium of quests within immersion. WoW is just a chore.,

as well as refining their own content . WoW has never had their own original content to refine. They haven't come up with a single unique gameplay mechanic in their 5 year run. WoW is just the MMORPG version of the Borg.

They're put together the best MMO package available currently. They put together the best package for casual folks who aren't necessarily fans of MMORPGs. Just like the same way you can't say Wii Sports is the best game of all time, despite it being the best selling game of all time. Because by its nature, its less of a game, more of a casual mini game collection under the guise of a game. It's not for everyone More of, its not for people who actually enjoy virtual world MMORPGs, or new ideas,

but feature for feature there are very few that can compare, no matter compete. Feature for feature it is heavily outdated. It is so insanely simple and unoriginal compared to many MMORPGs out there, especially older games. It just baffles me how Mythic, with 30 people, in just 2 years could create something as ground breaking as Dark Age of Camelot, but WoW with all its devs can only manage to just keep pumping out small scale raid dungeons at a glacial pace. The only thing other games can't compete with is the marketing budget Blizzard has

Yes, WoW is definitely the best MMO I have ever played. For me, the one thing that WoTLK improved on the most that was missing from Classic WoW and the Burning Crusade was the lore of the game. The quality of the quests were also greatly improved.

    Absolutely not!

I tried WoW back in 04 during a free trial.  I lasted about an hour before I was bored out of my skull, and rolling my eyes at virtually everything.   I uninstalled and went back to play AC2.   I have since not looked back at World of Warcraft.

I've enjoyed reading your post, because it's all true (LoLed about the quest part). WoW is the interface to the addiction behind it, nothing more. I'm sure it ruined alot of lives and report cards, being the Heroine-ware that it is.

    Definately not..

    1) Where is the player housing?

    2) Where is a true robust player crafting economy.. (note I said crafting, because most that is bought and sold in AH aren't crafted end products, but resources for people to grind alts)

    3) Where is the open social raid game?  Open, meaning that NO one is sent home because of some lame "hard cap"..

    4) Where are the EPIC quest like EQ1 did almost 10 years ago?  To this date those epic quest lines are far superior then anything Bliz has come up with..

    5) Where is the guild leveling and housing?  like what EQ2 has done..

    6) Where is the robust open world contested PvP?  Aion has their asses whooped in that area..

Do I need to continue, or do you get the idea?

McDonald's might be the largest and most profitable restaraunt in the world, but they don't serve the dishes it takes to make it to any critics "best" list :)
