People tend to hate Activision, not Blizzard.  Though I suppose Blizzard may get hate from the MMO community for WoW I've never seen Blizzard release anything other than AAA polished games.

I think people tend to hate blizzard, more then Activision. But with that little stunt they pulled with infinity ward, i've lost a lot of respect for them. I imagine Activision going under in the next 5 or 6 yrs.

I don't think they will... now that they have Bungie

I'm not getting it because I don't think it's worth $60+ of my money.  I loved the original SC, though.

I have bought 2 RTS games this years, supcom 2 and C&C4... didn't finish either games,

The story of supcom 2 was done by a 5 year old and should of been an expansion not a new release.

C&C4.. i'll be honest I kinda knew It would sux, C&C has not been right since Generals.. C&C4 felt like a tech demo rather than a game, played maybe the first 6 missions before the bright outlines of the oversized toy units broke my eyes.

Its been fun having all these alternative style RTS games.. lets get back to the roots.

SC2 will set it all right again.  God bless SC2.

Or maybe he was just done with Activion/Blizzard, like others were/are done with SOE, Cryptic, Funcom, NCSoft, etc etc.

Why do people often think that it's because of some herd behaviour that people do things, some form of projection or such, 'people judge as people are'?

Anyway, considering of getting SC2 for the campaign, but will wait till the first reviews hit the net; seems to be some review embargo till launch date, then press gets their examples of the full SC2.

Liked the 1st SC and Brood War very much, great RTS and storylines.

If you do some analysis of posts here, the herd behavior becomes quite obvious. People state their dislike, chiming in with others, without any sort of basis for their opinions.

Hmmm. Up till this post of you there were 12 posts from people who are getting SC2 and 4 that wouldn't.

Of those, two people stated that they'd never played any Starcraft game, one stated that he wouldn't buy SC2 bc of WoW and that it made him distrust Activision Blizzard, and only the last one purely bc of Activision/Blizzard.

So, of all  those posters only 2 stated they wouldn't buy SC2 bc of Activision Blizzard, and only 1 of those 2 purely because of that reason.

So WTH kind of herd behavior are you talking about? Seems to me your own perception is a bit colored, mate.

Halo is dying out. Theres rumors of a halo 4, and it got some really mixed reviews about the idea. (Digg.com), its kind of like rock band and guitar hero.. they keep coming out, because the makers are trying to suck it dry. However, as long as they keep an intensely good story, and the gameplay up to par, maybe we'll see it around for another few years. :p (not a fan of halo, but i appreciate it)

Eh, but you don't have to. You'll be matched with players roughly of your own skills, if everything works right.

Cant wait for diablo 3, cant tell you a release date though mate, sorry.

And i totally understand the korean thing. i do consider myself a "good" gamer, and therefore, overall i feel i will enjoy the multiplayer experience. But like you said, your right, you cant compete with people who play 23 hours a day.

Bnet 2.0 has a league system, you'll be playing like skilled players.. its the essence of bent 2.0.  Also unless you buy a SEA region copy of SC2 you wont be playing koreans.

Take a look at my sig below (from beta) - I am in the silver league (bronse>silver>gold>plat>diamond>pro) with an almost 50% win rate.  The system works! I dont get WTF pwned, I lose but its not cus I am playing a pro. If I lose most of my games I'll get demoted to bronse, if I win lots of my games I'll get promoted to gold.

So if your reason is fear you'll get steam rolled every games then fear not and go and get SC2.

Mine is already ordered, getting the collector's edition, actually.

I'm looking forward to the single player campaign, and also the custom games people will whip up with the editor.

And for the record, I'm still bitter that Starcraft Ghost got canceled, I so wanted to play that!

Edit: thanks, expresso, for your explanation of the system. Very interesting. :D

The ladder system in SC2 is very enjoyable.  I've always liked playing ladder games in Blizzard titles and I really enjoyed some of the maps in SC1... the only problem being no one ever played the SC1 ladder maps, it was always money maps and BGH which completely ruined the game for me in the long run.

I just hope they have more maps lined up for launch for multiplayer.  there was enough 2v2 / 1v1 maps to keep us busy in Beta but 3v3 / 4v4 only had one map each and they both wore on me fast playing them over and over.

    I won't be getting SC2.

I played SC with friends back in the day and it was OK, just not something I really liked enough to play other than with them. When I got the beta for SC2 the game does look really well done, but again it just doesn't grab me the way it seems to grab others. As for the multiplayer aspect of the game, each match is just way too predictable. At first when you start playing you won't notice it, but after a few matches it seems everyone has the same strat in mind.

So yeah, not really worth it to me. Maybe later when it's sold at a huge discount and I'm really bored.

    Talahar! Semi-maybe-possible good news.

There are two games coming out in the future, both MMORPGs from what i understand (by blizzard). One is rumored to be a sci-fi game. Now... Out of all the games i've played by Blizzard... If i were to put anything thought into what it could be.. lol

but don't get your hopes up, nearly everything is unreleased information, aside from "hey we're making new games". But, a part of my heart.. will always have its hopes up.

I would think they would be nuts to not make a SC MMO. I mean while I would rather have a whole new IP, ignoring the uber-large SC fanbase would be a shame.

Though on the other hand I can sorta see why they wouldn't make one. The SC Purists and messing up any lore/timelines.

You must have been stuck in the lower leagues, or have been in the Beta since it first arrived (I was there as well)

Early on in beta there were strats that could not be beat easily because the units or combo of them was OP compared to what someone could muster in defense in the same amount of time.  Best example I can think of is when Roaches were 1 food each, a good Zerg doing a roach rush was nearly impossible to beat, hell I remember a buddy of mine and I would play 2v2 and both be Zerg.  We'd both roach rush and the game was over in the first five minutes because no matter what there is no way anyone could beat us.

Another example is when the Protoss Void Ray had three levels of beam, though in later stages of beta the mass void ray strat popped up again it was no where near as powerful as it once was when they did more damage AND had more HP than they do now.

One of the biggest reasons SC2 keeps me hooked into playing it is because every round is different, even if just in subtle ways.  You always need to be scouting and countering what the enemy is doing and sure a lot of rounds may seem the same... but different people handle the same situation differently and it's fun to play people who try things you haven't seen before.

There is so much diversity in playing the game, it's not the games fault you choose to always mass marines.

I won't be getting SC2 because I refuse to support Activision Blizzard. Let me be a little clearer, I refuse to support Bobby Kotick. This is the man who will end up ruining a great many franchises as long as AB keeps buying developers.

The guy just wants to cash in on big name properties by pushing as many crappy games using those titles out the door as quickly as possible. He's been quoted saying as much.

It's a real shame, because I'd like to play SC2, Diablo III and even check out Cataclysm, but I won't while Kotick is running the place.

Huge SC fan, but don't see myself picking up the sequel.  What I've seen/read so far doesn't look good to me.  Same strategies for each race to win in multiplayer, the story is slow and ponderous, being sold as 3 games, etc.  I love the updated graphics and thought I would definitely be buying this title when I first heard about it, but at this point it doesn't look like it.  I could always change my mind though.  I'm not a Blizzard hater or anything.

Where as trolling those who dislike Blizzard is the 2nd accepted norm here. Pots and Kettles, mate.

First off I've been a hardcore Blizzard fan since the days of games such as Blackthorne and Lost Vikings. I've become disenchanted with Blizzard since they made Wow into what I feel is a sad mockery of its former self.

I am not planning to purchase Star Craft 2, or Diablo 3, or in fact any Blizzard product from this day forward. I'm tired of game developers saddling us with unneeded crap to play a game we already paid for, ie, Games For Windows Live, constant Internet connection to play an offline game such as Steam and Ubisofts new DRM scheme. I see the new Real ID system as nothing more than one more unnecessary piece of baggage. I don't want game companies to try to be my BFF, just make good games and let me play them when and how I choose to do so. I am greatly disenchanted with Blizzards behavior over the last couple of years. I feel they have compromised their values to try to become more than a game company and become a social phenomenon that impacts more of our day to day life than gaming. I'm not interested. So I'm not going to give these guys more money to create things that annoy me.

If this was facebook, i'd like this. Lol. I knew of the system, but wans't sure how it worked. This is great!

I'll elaborate a little more for those interested.

There is is the usual custom maps where you can create a game but the meat is in the league/ladder system.

    Leagues & ladders

There are 5 leagues bronse>silver>gold>plat>diamond (pro league to be added later)

When you start your multiplayer adventures you'll play 5 placement matches, the game will match you with players of different "skill" levels to determin the league you start off in.

When you are placed in the league you are put into a group of 100 players, this is your ladder - you will play others outside of the ladder this is just a nice way to see progression.  Rather than listing all players in the league and your player #13,567 of 23,789, you'll be player #14 of 100.

    Match making

The game will match you with players and will flag you or your opponent as "slightly favoured", "favoured" or "even match" - there is some debate on what this all means but usualy if your opponant is "favoured" he could be in the league above yours, if he is "slighly favoured" he could be in the same league just higher in his ladder, and "even match" is obvious.

The game will not always give you even maches as it needs to constantly determin your skill level and see if your due for promotion or even demotion.

    Promotion & Demotion

It is still not clear how it works, simply being #1 in your ladder does not equal promotion, winning more than 80% of your games does not equal promotion.  Most believe there is a hidden rating that scores your gameplay and use of APM, Economey and other stuff you do in games.  And promotions are based on this rather then win/lose stats.

For example in Phase 1 of beta I was in bronze and has a 60% win rate and was floating around the top 3 of my ladder - I never got promoted, in phase 2 of beta I started off in bronse was around 30 in my ladder with a 40% win rate and got promoted to silver.  I was a better player in phase 2 in regards to my ingame play with micro/macro, hot keys etc.

Blizzard say they will never say how the system works as it can be abused, but also say the system needs more players than are in beta (see upwards of 10k on the EU beta) to really work... the more players the better the system.

One of the things I know about Blizzard's next MMO project is that it's in fact an entirely new IP. So the next one will NOT be the Starcraft MMO many of us want. Nevertheless.... New Blizzard universe! Awesome!
