no haven't tried it but, we both have tried playing rogues and we hate the system they use for energy and are horrifed at the idea of trying to use it as hunters,
we've leveled 4 hunters , 2 priests, a druid, and a warrior to 80 between us (hunters were before duel spec (by far our favorite class)
this just seems to be the bigest change to a class we've ever seen in an MMO and we're shocked at the we're doing it too bad attitude Blizzard is taking toward it.
I take it you haven't played much other then WoW, so I'll forgive the comment that you have never seen a bigger change.
Hunters never made sense with Mana, they don't play as naturally as other classes because of that. While I don't play WoW anymore, it sounds like an improvement for the better to make the class more naturally applicable to what it's meant to be.
You obviously have never dealt with SOE. Blizzard is a saint in comparison.
I really feel for you OP but as others have already said, just wait and see how it plays out. I don't think you will be at a disadvantage because of this system and I am sure Blizzard will do their best to polish it and make it feel right. They will not leave it for 6 months+ if it is broken because it is a major change. And I thought focus was something between rage and energy. From what I've read about it, you're not getting an energy bar. You use skills that give you focus in order to use other skills which consume focus. This sounds more like runic power if you ask me. But I haven't really checked it recently so things might have changed.
On a side not, I play a resto druid and I am angry because they are not making a lot of changes to resto druids. I don't want my class to play exactly the same it did. I am sure it won't but I would kill for major changes like the ones you're getting.
Personally i'm not sure. My hunter was my main (became alt once i could roll DK => just love evil palas ) and i was excited about the no ammo change and about the focus as well. This said , it all depends on how they implement it , from what i've read it doesn't look that good atm . Maybe they'll tweak it to make it interesting and i hope they do so.
Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt. Among those who dislike oppression are many who like to oppress.
Hunter is one of the more easy classes to play in WoW like Retpally and Mages, and do a boat load of dmg. I welcome the change to Focus, then the brain dead dumb fuck's... who have to use their brain to actually play the class... can /wrists, or go play a LoLRet.
Unless the game has changed a lot since I played all you have to do is wait. Blizzard will buff the hunters and nerf some other class each in their turn. As someone once said, just wait until the wheel stops on your class and things will be fine, until they spin it again.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
im sure energy regen will change to be similiar to mana. i think that if you are convinced that your character will play different is jumping the gun a little. dont base it off how energy is now and especially dont base it off how the rogue plays. blizz isnt stupid enough to take mana away and give u energy and expect it to be the same. they will make the necessary changes to compensate.
Although at the moment i'm playing an enh shamy (only in raids due to available spot) comming Cataclysm i will switch back to my NE hunter. He was my main for 4 years and it's the class i love. Personally i'm looking forward to the class overhaull in the new expansion. The changes look quite interesting and will bring a breeze of fresh air. It is about time hunters get rid of their mana, something people where asking for on the forums for quite some time now. I believe that the focus & focus regen due haste mantra will work fine.
Of course we'll have to see the new stuff in action.
Now before I begin this undoubtedly lengthy post - I would like to state that I quit WoW back in September of last year due to sudden lack of interest in the primary mechanics of the game. That has not kept me from keeping up with everything MMO-Champion or the official site puts out, mechanic changes are some of my favorite aspects of MMORPG games as a whole - the new direction of Hunters, Paladins, Moonkins, Warlocks and Warriors refined rage mechanics all recieve 5 star from me. With that been said, I really hate to see someone quit something they enjoy because of misinformation.
Here is my attempt to sway you AND your girlfriend away from quitting. Before I do that however let me add that if your choice is final and this post is merely words put against an immovable wall - I hate you.
Joking aside, I do not see how Focus is different than Mana aside from the fact that it is easier to manage. It is a resource, with few differences from Energy yes, but also one you must manage. Sounds a lot like Mana to me, a mix between Mana and Energy in fact. Now let's take Mana and Energy and put them in two camps. Let's say Mana is your girlfriend, you love Mana. Let's say Energy is a butt raping prison inmate that you absolutely cannot stand the thought of. Now that we have segregated the two and made them obviously separate entities, let's bring them together.
Your walking down the street, mana in arm - you see energy but some of the sense of dread is relieved because you know that your mana is right there with you. Down the street from Mana and Energy is Focus. Focus is an ex-con that was imprisoned falsely. There is really no reason to hate Focus but since he is in some way associated to Energy, he is instantly thrashed and shot down the tube mentally.
What we have here is hatred and distaste by association. You don't know anything about Focus apparently because all it really is, is a much more twitchy version of mana - it still recovers at a rate similar to mana but requires more... don't mind the pun but focus. Really the differences between Energy and Focus at first glance are quite small - but after carefully considering the actual usage of the mechanic they couldn't be farther apart. You will still spam steady shot as it is a focus builder, something rogues WISH they had - a way to actively on very little to no cooldown build fast energy. Upon reaching your desired amount of focus you will unleash a more powerful shot - basically keeping your rotation similar to that of the one you used while in possession of mana. So I ask you again, what is your problem with Focus? Aside from the fact that the bar looks different?
Allow me to point out the obvious advantages of Focus.
No finite resourcing, there is always something to do with your weapon.
Less cooldown management, more resource management. This translates to higher bursts when need be... all this with no real change to your core class.
Need I say it... less Huntards, I.E. Hunters that don't know WTF they are doing - All those tools will go to another class that is easier to play.
Reliance on skill rather than rotation, some times you will have to practice better resource management - this isn't really a bad thing as it also includes separating the decent hunters from the amazing ones.
Big perk: Never have to resort to mana gaining tactics mid fight unless you seriously messed up your rotation, this will increase your overall DPS.
-------------------------------------------
Disadvantages?
Well with all the buffs and tools your class is recieving from the new mechanics you are using, the only real disadvantage is not being able to go apeshit on your mana early in a fight. However I wouldn't really call this a huge disadvantage as now you gain more sustainability.
--------------------------------------------
So let me ask you one last time... Do you really want to quit the game and leave all your friends just because of your descrimination of bar color? Because in the end that's all it is, the advantages and potential of this new system far outweigh the non-sensical mana bar for your obviously non-magical class. My suggestion is to learn to play with the new mechanic and you will find that it is an actual resource and not just a spam clicking tool that rogues and cats rely on.

wow nice to see people who actually wish to Talk about a topic rather than shout it down. I want to say thaks to all the people who actually talked about the subject (noods Qazz) and have to say that we are canceled but the talk here has made us think we'll try coming back and trying it out to see if it works for us when they do it.
for the silly posters who want to say get a life/ ltp/ looser/ etc, ummm 1) we have lives thak you very much for the concern after we walk in the park we come home and play wow :P 2) we've played from launch so while maybe not uber we know our classes thank you and have played them even when they were , god forbid HARD. 3) loosers hmm perhaps but we're HAPPY loosers you should try it sometime but warning you have to take your hand off your e-peen to try it.
guess it comes down to Blizz will need to get this big a change right. they have decieded to do it damm the torpedos so to speak(to hunters and it apperars many other classes too)
Stepping back and looking at the bigger picture maybe they are trying to knock wow out of a rut they think it is in or somthing. if the changes don't suite us we'll have to move on. I just really hope they get it right.
Biggest Change in a MMO to a Class? WoW completely changed the Enhancment tree they use too be a tank DPS tree like Feral Kitty and Tank Bear. This change seems too be alittle tweek lol. Its called a nerf Hunters are OP if Rogues used mana like Hunters did we would be ungodly DPS. I'm sorry you can't handle not being OP anymore.
I'm quitting. I'm a Tauren Hunter. I actually already uninstalled the game. Why? Because Blizzard took a big fat shit on the horde in this Xpac. Everyone is gonna wind up rolling ally. one word Worgen.
Blizzard could not have made a bigger mistake. Who wanted those goofy goblins. Than ally get the shape shifting werewolves?
No, I am happy with 90% of the changes they are making to Hunters and pets and I think that they are long overdue and positive changes, including the switch from mana/int to focus. My Hunter is my main, I raid with my Hunter and have been playing him since Vanilla... I just hope that everything gets worked out for release. No, it's not working perfectly yet.

I doubt people will change to ally just because of the worgen.... and it would be a stupid reason to quit just because you dont get a certain race that you want on your side

Well, you would probably be wrong. Most people I talked to are excited... yea excited about worgen. All horde I know keeps talking about it. Nobody cares about the goblins. Stupid reason to quit? I quit because I was bored of the game and tired of spending money on it to begin with. It doesn't deserve my money. Aion deserves my money, but not wow. Of course Ncsoft is a shit company that banned me so THEY don't deserve anymore of my money.
I am waiting, waiting for gw2 (which unfortunately is an ncsoft game) FF14 or TOR.

Sorry, but did not read past this. You are raging and willing to leave a game over a system that you haven't tried yet??? Even if you had played it in Beta it still wouldn't be final release, so still a silly stance to take.
Things change, WoW is nothing like the game i played on release but i am personally still enjoying it. There are some things listed for Cataclysm that i have reservations about, but i will at least try them first before i complain about them being wrong.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
lol sorry Reizlanzer didn't mean to slight you after your long and thoughtful post. I did read it and found and it did make me think
but so have several others in this chain.
the worgen vs goblin thing i think the Horde is safe. I know many horde are dying to run around in pvp as a tiny little gnomish sized HORDE and /dance on top of larger dead ally toons.
I think this primal urge goes all the way back to Dark Age of Camelot when any Lurikeen ranger worth his/her salt could not STAND the sight of a live breathing troll in a pvp zone.
Are any other Hunters leaving over the changes / loss of mana in cataclysm ?
I and my girlfriend have both canceled over the fact were going to basically get the same system a class we hate to play ( rogue) gets.
We're both rather upset at the " Too bad we're doing it, you'll love it cause we say so " approach they took with it.
We also found it pointless to post on the official WOW forums as any discussion of the idea was promptly shouted down by the rabid fanboi element.
Is any one else upset with this ? we miss our friends, but this made anything we did seem usless cause it was all changing anyway.
Nope. Does it make sense to you that hunters are using MANA? The new system makes much more sense.
Yes it does. If it makes sense one needs mana to use magic. I havnt played in a long time but when I did, hunters had magic shots that used mana and could even heal their pets so yeah, it makes sense for magic users to use mana.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Death knights have plenty of attacks that are magic and they don't have mana. Seems to work just fine there.

I Didnt say the new changes wouldnt work for a hunter. Just said that yes, it makes perfect sense for a magic user to use mana, unless of course the magic shots and pet healing a hunter did wasnt really magic. But that would be just silly wouldnt int?
