Led Zeppelin is a clone of Pink Floyd. They both use guitars, drums, bass, and keyboards therefore Led Zeppelin is a clone and didn't do anything original. That's the common thought process I see around here.
you post on this forum, i post on this forum, therefore, I AM A CLONE OF YOU! O.o
Pretty decent in general after watching the vid: BUT, hate to say this, doesnt look very far off from another "WoW-clone" except with up-to-date graphics engine.
...how does it look like WoW?
WIth all the mmo's out there that are coming out, I am not in the slightest interested in this game. I did look at it and think about it. Honestly I am not a fan boy, and I myself had thought maybe this game was an Aion without the wings, But...... I,,aswell am a lil tired of hearing the same old tired "wow clone" coming from the haters. Every freaking new game comes out, they label it a wow clone before release. It really is getting old and I am definatley sick of hearing wow clone. If you don't fucking like the game don't fucking play the game.
To be very frank, i dont even know what i'm looking for myself. I'm not a game designer, i'm a player. But when that mmo comes along that introduces all new/refreshing concepts, and i feel like i'm playing something new for once, i'll know it.
Umm kk I guess that makes sense in a very vague sort of way... but im done with this one lol

I said its not far off, just gave me that feel from first impressions at the graphics/mobs/interface layout. And yes many games give me that same feel, so, yes i could almost say that about most of the current/just-launched mmos. I am hoping for something new, or prolly like a break-thru in the mmo genre. That being said, it still looks generally decent, but nothing to jump around and get excited about.
Im still trying to figure out what people mean but breakthrough in the MMO genre.... I mean AoC didnt have much of a UI... I dont remember people being like zomg so different and then bailed on it and still put it down because it was a bit rushed and had a slow start.

LEGO Universe is that way ----->
I don't think we are going to see anything your expecting for a long, long, long time. MMORPGs seem to have some defined characteristics like progression. I've seen many games come through with very different styles but its never what people are expecting or want. We have FPS, arcade style, hack and slash, and combo button combat. How much different can that get? Neural interface? Virtual reality helmets?

You could say that about any game. Are you slow or something? Just because it is a fantasy game and an MMO does not mean it is WoW. WoW is not the be all end all.
Please explain why it is a WoW clone. Because it has combat? Because it is a fantasy game? Because it has a map and chat box?
You sound like an idiot.

what do you want them to do? how can they make a MMO that's completely different than WoW? every fricken game is a WoW clone because people want it to be COMPLETELY different. how are they supposed to do that?
They havent managed it yet obviously, hence the ga-zillions of epic failure mmos launched. If i had the answer, i'd sell it to a gaming company and i'd be very very very rich.

THe only MMOs I consider failures are the ones that shut down their servers. Ex: Tabula Rasa, Auto Assualt, etc.
If the game is still running and you can play, it's not a failure, it just didn't reach WoW numbers. WoW numbers are not required for a game to be successful. WoW doesn't even need its numbers to be successful.

Human invented fire, human invented rockets. SEE W00T I DID THARRRR?
Yep, there is something to fill the gap there. Obviously the world of mmorpgs can't jump from something mediocre to spectacular. If anything, TERA is the mmorpg that is taking this exact next step.
I'm not sure about anyone else's comments, but the two things I saw in the video I really didn't like were:
a. The agro range seems out of whack. Whatever these creatures are they have to be blind and deaf not to notice this guy.
b. They were far too easy for him to kill. Noted that they did have green names which may mean they were of lower level, I know other games do that but I am not going to assume that it's the same for this game. But even as lower level enemies they seemed be be pushovers.
Other than that I liked the graphics, though I thought the spell effects were rather lackluster, and I thought the animations were very fluid. I also like the crosshair aiming system. No more tab and auto attack. It still didn't seem quite as fast paced as I would have hoped, but it was showing a mage character... I am sure a rogue would be ducking in and out, stabbing, dodging and so forth.
This entire thread is silly. Tera is what it is. If you want 100% twitch-based combat go play a melee class in Vindictus. Tera is semi-twitch and semi-hotkey basics. It really comes down to what you want. Tera does have some collision detection and some sick ass attack animations though, including attacks where multiple characters are animated into it; which is pretty neat, but not revolutionary.
It is based on the tried and true standards of last-generation MMOs, but it steps up the game a fair bit. Revolutionary? No. But definitely not a clone of old mechanics. If everything were revolutionary: It would probably all suck. Few extreme ideas are actually worth implementing. As far as I'm concerened the fact that they base combat off of something that you know works is a boon. Harder to ruin something that is already implemented, and it is easy to modify into something way cooler.
And honestly, there aren't many MMOs with good collision NOR manual aiming. So to say it's "like any other MMO" is a blanket generalization and complete hyperbole.
Edit for sanity:
Okay, it's a demo for people to preview the game. They want to showcase the crazy graphics and the cool skills. They aren't going to give you a bunch of polished mobs that are actually reasonably challenging. They are going to load up zones with cannon fodder and give all the classes access to their (finished, polished, tested (IE: NOT MUCH)) super-cool moves. It's more marketing than gameplay. Honestly, how can you people not automatically realize that?
The first videos of the boss fights were impressive. But as usual it was set up to look really good, in actuality the gameplay seems like any other MMO, and a pretty bad one at that. This video show what looks like very unresponsive and amateuristic combat scenes:
hehe that video is low lvl game play at a convention...so your comment should reflect that. Low lvl content is ment to teach new players how to play the game and not to overwhelm them right off the bat.
Remember there will be a learning curve for this game compared to the traditional tab targeting game that everyone knows by heart.
From all the gameplay video's so far I think Tera's combat looks like an improvement over all the new games that are comming out and I'm sure the monster AI will vastly improve the higher you go inorder to mantain the action feel of the game.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
combat might look interesting first but when u grind ur butt to level 20 u will get tired of the need to constant camera moving, and running left and right to align ur target.
As opposed to what? Tab target and auto attack? I think this looks amazing.
It doesn't look amazing if you're honest with yourself. It looks like any other MMO out there. Tera was supposed to bring "revolutionary combat" to the table and it's a run of the mill slow and unresponsive action game. I don't need to sugar coat this, it kinda speaks for itself.
I don't think it looks amazing or run of the mill...It certainly does not look bad and the Combat animations are pretty cool...
The running animation is a bit brutal...I'll give you that one...That looks ridiculous...
So when you step back, does it always turn your character around 180 degrees? He seems to turn his back on the mob a lot, just to get into position. Being that the camera still faces forward, it seems that when you move backwards it turns your back to the enemy...which is a weak position defensively.
Also, it appears to be a bit clunky, movement wise...noting the long lanky steps as he's moving around to get better position on his target. It doesn't look very fluid to me. He has to stop moving even to use an instant cast spell. It appears to be very similar to Aion, where you lose control of your character when you use just about any ability. In WoW, when I'm tanking I can continue to move into position while using my abilities...I don't have to wait around for the animation to finish.
This is not game breaking for me, just something that I've noticed that I hope I'm wrong about.
Looks really good to me, PVP wise I am hoping this to be the spiritual successor of L2 but with a bit more depth into the mechanics available to the players, only thing I am disappointed so far is that there are no sieges or territorial control, but these guys being the original L2 team its likely they follow the same update model L2 did which means, big updates with alot of stuff which is fine by me.

I know you are saying here, but it could be designed that way for PvP balance you know, Caster vs Melee.
If caster doesn't stop moving a melee toon isn't going to make it to them....

I don't know that this will be the case in TERA, but in Aion not only casters lose control of their character to perform attack/casting animations. This is why melee aerial pvp against casters fails. The melee finally makes it to the caster, stops to perform an animation while the casters flees. This prevents the use of any melee chain attacks and allows the caster to use another root, slow, fear, etc. or simply get out of melee range. Again, this may not be an issue in TERA, I am just explaining that this mechanic in Aion does not serve to allow melee to catch casters, it's just there because animations "look cool."

I can give a bit of experience from my duels in the FGT but the only time I faced a sorcerer I was on my archer and he outleveled me from what he mentioned. I was around 13 and he claimed to be 20 and I was able to get him down passed half life with no CC abilities (neither of us had any). As melee, I only faced other melee people cause that's all that challanged me. Also another thing you need to know is different classes have different movement speed. I dont have the list on me but if you goto Terafans.com I am sure you can find it on there.

Yes it always turns your character around 180deg and you start running instead of slowly backpedaling. It may seem awkward at first but you get use to it and it makes movement a lot faster.
Every skill can be cancelled by using a movement key or block command if the class has it. Having total movement during skill casting would put melee classes at a huge disadvantage, There effective range is in the 2m-3m and 5m range while the sorcerer and archer range is 15m.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Some post theirs and move on, others try to make their opinion a fact.
And we all know that: "Those with the most opinions tend to have the fewest facts."
I like TERA's combat system, regardless how it looks. It is new compared to TAB, ATTACK...Make a sandwich...come back and mob is dead.
It will weed out BOTS, Farmers and unskilled people (Until they learn the game) and that tends to make for a better community I would think.
I could be wrong.

It creates a good balance and from a "story/realistic/fantasy" world perspective, what sorcerors are running while summong huge magics?
