Being that the camera still faces forward, it seems that when you move backwards it turns your back to the enemy...which is a weak position defensively.

Also, it appears to be a bit clunky, movement wise...noting the long lanky steps as he's moving around to get better position on his target.  It doesn't look very fluid to me. He has to stop moving even to use an instant cast spell. It appears to be very similar to Aion, where you lose control of your character when you use just about any ability.  In WoW, when I'm tanking I can continue to move into position while using my abilities...I don't have to wait around for the animation to finish.

This is not game breaking for me, just something that I've noticed that I hope I'm wrong about.

Yes it always turns your character around 180deg and you start running instead of slowly backpedaling.  It may seem awkward at first but you get use to it and it makes movement a lot faster.

Every skill can be cancelled by using a movement key or block command if the class has it.  Having total movement during skill casting would put melee classes at a huge disadvantage,  There effective range is in the 2m-3m and 5m range while the sorcerer and archer range is 15m.

I can understand the inability to move during spells where there is a cast time, I was commenting that even an instant cast spell stops player movement (or the player must stop).  This takes away from the fluid nature of gameplay imho.  Of course, I haven't played it so we'll see.

Me thinks it plays well. That looks like either a sorcerer or a healer of a sort (More sorc). But anyways, I like it. PvP might actually be skill based, unless hacks run rampant.

Lets just see how things come along with En Masse and such. I'm keeping an eye on TERA...

I'm usually critical about games lately. And that video looks good compared to most mmo's I've seen lately. And one of the best looking ever. It looks better than FF14's and it looks better than Aion.

From the OP's post it sounds like he's new to mmos and think they're suppose to be like regular games or something. The OP's perspective is amateurish, no the combat of Tera.

With that said, besides the combat, Tera just looks like another generic fantasy mmo.

I don't know what video you're watching, I think it looks awesome.

This game like other corean style mmorpg's have alot of annoying effects upon casting spells like they want to impress 10 y old kids. U need minimum effects cause in big number battles u ll need to watch opponents carefully and not the effects. Running is ridiculous they leap forward like L2 which sucks. Nice smooth animations though.Caster fights look fine.Need to check melllee fights too though and hopefully u can watch the coarse of your sword when attacking like it happens in oblivion without any ridiculous effects or trajectories traces.

Looks good, except movement... And without good movement good pvp is hardly imaginable.

After watching this excellent video my only thought was that the OP is trying very very hard to find some flaws in the game...

i'm no fanboy but common the game looks nice and this video was great!!

  • AeroangelAeroangel Member UncommonPosts: 498

Looked like FE's combat to me without the guns or melee weapons. It's nice to have an upgrade over the standard tab and hit buttons system, but I still think DDO and TCOS combat systems were probably funner from the looks of that video. Personal opinion though.

You could say that about any game. Are you slow or something? Just because it is a fantasy game and an MMO does not mean it is WoW. WoW is not the be all end all.

Please explain why it is a WoW clone. Because it has combat? Because it is a fantasy game? Because it has a map and chat box?

    You sound like an idiot.

I said its not far off, just gave me that feel from first impressions at the graphics/mobs/interface layout. And yes many games give me that same feel, so, yes i could almost say that about most of the current/just-launched mmos. I am hoping for something new, or prolly like a break-thru in the mmo genre. That being said, it still looks generally decent, but nothing to jump around and get excited about.

Im still trying to figure out what people mean but breakthrough in the MMO genre.... I mean AoC didnt have much of a UI... I dont remember people being like zomg so different and then bailed on it and still put it down because it was a bit rushed and had a slow start.

To be very frank, i dont even know what i'm looking for myself. I'm not a game designer, i'm a player. But when that mmo comes along that introduces all new/refreshing concepts, and i feel like i'm playing something new for once, i'll know it.

Have you tried The Chronicles of Spellborn? Very unique combat system similar to what Tera is trying to boast, but from what I can tell TCoS does much better.

Granted, you have to jump through some hoops right now to get it installed and working, but I seriously think you might find the game gives you a glimmer of what you're looking for.

Not even close to what TERA will feature. Get your shit elsewhere.

You can see the similarities in combat and I personally like TCoS's targeting UI better then the crosshairs.

Another, older game with similar combat and gameplay is Fantasy Earth Zero.

TCoS combat is nothing like TERAs. I know cause I am pretty sure I have played it more then everyone on this thread since I am a focus group tester. What kinda proof would you need that would not require me to break the NDA? =P

I was not really interested in the game too much, but the trailer showing combat does look pretty good.  Thanks for sharing the video bastionix.

I don't see much similarities in combat between the two besides wasd movement,  TCoS is a little faster movement wise compared to tera so far.

I do like TCoS's crosshair though because it's compact / smaller than what you see in tera's for there range classes,  not sure if it can be resized.  Will have to wait and see on that one.   The melee classes will only get a small x crosshare with a range meter next to it and that looks fine IMO.

I really hated the rolodex concept for the skill bar in TCoS...I found myself always looking away from the target and focusing on the skill bar...meh that's just me and my bad habits i guess.

Tera has combat is much better that Spellborn. DDO combat is just hold down the button and watch your characer swing his weapon. Totally boring.

Well the only thing we got to go on is CB3 video's of some group pve play.  The one's I can find have poor quality and no sound but it does give a good perspective on how game play will be.

Archer PoV  (Group): 2 Lancers, 2 Archers, 1 Sorcerer.  No healer or buffer.

    items of note:

wall bug (need to fix that)

Totally agree. Spellborn's little rolling skillbar was a good concept, and it really keeps combat fast-paced, but I always had to watch it to make sure I was doing the right skills at the right time. It was a game of skill combinations, not player skill. Which Tera seems to be offering.

Big Red Dragons. Doesnt get much better than that.

    Thanks for the vid link.

Looks pretty good to me.  The rendering and FX look almost cinematic quality.

I'm "being honest with myself" here - this game looks like a lot of fun.

  • satojinsatojin Member Posts: 125

This looks great (assuming actual gameplay is network lag free like this). I see my main to hopes for MMORPGs, manual dodging and aimed attacks. I can only hope blocking with a shield in this game deflects blows (instead of reducing damage).

I can see how OP thinks the attacks look the same as anything because they're in a hotbar form but what other worthwhile game has you aiming your spells?

But I really think lag will make or break this game. It's what broke TCoS for me (my attacks weren't felt until a brief while late and dodging was screwy because monsters were aiming at where I used to be and not where I currently was).

While I wont read through all of this thread and it's replies, I will however reply to your post regarding the lag.

I think I'm allowed to mention that the FGT servers were located in the US(if I'm not mistaken), with me playing from EU having no lag at all. The game performed extremely well, very much to my surprise.

Also, the very nature of the game is very different from your standard tab-target MMO. I had been a fan for months before entering the FGT so I knew what I was getting into and I was very prepared for this type of gamestyle, still, I was blown away by it's very feeling and functionality. It adds an whole new layer, it makes even grinding fun, if you're into that type of thing. (I thought I was never going to mention grinding and fun in the same sentence, however, there you go.)
