How are you supposed to test the game when the controls are so horrible as they are now??
Sure for casters and ranged classes it's less of an issue. But melee classes are almost impossible to test and a sheer frustration. Not unless you happen to have a gamepad hooked to your PC and fully used to using it.
I have no gamepad nor am I used to it and as I mainly play melee classes. I am unable to test the game. As the controls and the camera are just driving me insane!
That's what I mean with how fundamental the control system is and how it should be finished before Beta begins.
As what's the point of inviting tons and tons of PC players into Beta, when you have the PC controls not ready and in place??
Just my 2 cents on the matter.
Eh, I guess you can argue that SE should have worked longer on the placeholders if you think the game is "unplayable" in it's current state. I don't share those sentiments. The game is completely playable with the keyboard, and the only thing holding you back is that you don't want to play the beta with only keyboard. It is up to your own perception.
What's the point of inviting people into beta when the game is not ready? Yes, I wonder.
And no, I am not defending the control scheme. I am simply saying the game is playable as is, which is what matters; not that they're up to your own standards any sooner than in retail. Your personal enjoyment is not a part of this Beta, Commercial betas are for that kind of *cough testing *cough
I like this post. And agree with it is it playable yes, enjoyable, heck no . Win for that game huh.
I mean come on, this agrument is silly. Don't defend bad behavior, in this case bad dev decisions.
Your response should be yeah , they should fix that. (Cause this is the truth, not soem crazy non-agruemtn about whatever).

Yeah, there are quite a few others too. For instance Lineage 2 was released in South Korea before WoW's release as well as Runescape, Maplestory in Korea, and a few other Korean MMOs. There were at least 20 MMOs released before WoW. If you count text based MUDs, there could hundreds.
Lol MUDs
Not long ago this was hellla exciting
Don't hate on mudd just cuz u played a bad one , there is no mmo that si cut throat or as intense as duris son.
I never hated on MUDs i was just showing how far we came in a short time. Hating on a MUD is like hating on reading. Not like I have never posted my first MMO was a MUD and was awesome. Can't hate on the roots but it was good to reminisce.

I'd love to know if you're planning to play the game. Your posts seem consistently honest, realistic and an informative as they can be without clearly breaking the NDA.

What exactly is bad behaviour about it?
They implement a placeholder build for the testers to test, which is not meant to be fun, enjoyable nor "a free demo" of the game, so that they can work on the retail build more efficiently.
I don't see anything "bad" about that decision. What do you see that I don't? Should the testers be pampered with a 99% finished build so they don't have to deal with any evil inconveniences?
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Ha ha ha, good one! So SE did it on purpose to tone down excitement for beta, so they are sure testers will be back for release.
Hmm so its down to the mechanics now nice finally something serious. Well yeah the controls suck just liek they did in ffxi and since they are looking to capture those who are currently playing and used to play ffxi I would guess they game no second thought to the controls. Not sure how it is abroad but it seems they specifically wanted toe game to be played with a game pad. No I am not sure if this has to do with future console release of if more folks overseas have the game pad for pc. Either or way returneees can expect more of the same. Since I play a lot of platformers on PC I have a ps3 game pad and use it readily but I would imagine no1 is looking forward to more ffxi controls on a keyboard. As far as it affecting game sales jump/swim was a more heated topic so im going to say this will hold less weight. Often MMOs lead they player to believe they suck if they don't get the controls instead on the other way around and rightly so since some1 on a game pads gonna get the controls just right at some point and make the game seem quite playable.
Ha ha ha, good one! So SE did it on purpose to tone down excitement for beta, so they are sure testers will be back for release.
I don't think they care what their reaction is really. They'll most likely be surprised at "how much they can update in such a short timeframe" when they start applying parts of the final client in the Beta client for further testing (which they have been working on for god knows how long already).
Those who treat it like a free demo should just get the hell out.

Are you serious? You really think companies invite thousands of potential customers into Beta and show them an unfinished game with horrible controls?
That is seriously a first one for me! And I have been in tons of MMO beta's. Good ones till really bad ones. The bad ones... well whe all know how those games ended up (R.I.P.).
Ofcourse for Beta you don't expect the best gaming experience and quite a lot of things to be bugged or not ready yet.
But the least you expect for a Beta (sertainly at this stage) is that the fundamental systems in the game are finished, ready and implemented. You are to help test afterall and iron out the final kinks.
Camera and controls are one of the most important and fundamental systems of any game! They can totally make or break a game!
And at this moment... sorry... they are breaking the game for me.

....
Hyanmen you are not going to win that argument with the general PC gaming population. I totally agree with adapt and learn when dealing with gameplay mechanics. I will argue to death and beat a dead horse to a wet juicy pulp over gaming controls.
I don't have to learn to drive all over because I bought a Japanese car after owning a domestic for 10 years. I don't have to figure out how to buckle my seatbelt in a different generation of automobile. Square would certainly not expect console gamers to pick up a different controller for each and every game they release. Console controls are standardized, PC controls are standardized. Square oops'ed when they thought they could balance controls equally between console gamers and PC gamers. Folks can likely calm down about it until we hear more from Phase 3 leakers but...
Don't say just pick up and learn a "new" way of playing with KB only. Like it's no big thing. It is a minority viewpoint, exclusive, and full of holes. Most people can't do that or don't want to and I don't blame them.
The NDA was dumb anyhow they should have put all closed beta testers on payroll with serious legal repercussions until Phase 3 then let the masses in.
Don't even waste your time arguing with Haynman, if you've read any of his posts in any other thread related to FF14, you will find he is the biggest fan boi and will defend it no matter what. Which is funny, since it's not even realesed yet but many people in beta and alpha have complained about the controls.
SE are making a hugh MMO and they've had 8 years, yet they still can't deliver PC controls, even though most of their player base is going to be on the PC.
Are you serious? You really think companies invite thousands of potential customers into Beta and show them an unfinished game with horrible controls?
Uhh yes, what was the Beta's purpose again..
It does not matter either way lol, the finished product is what matters. The testers should be grateful that they can affect even the design of the game, and not just small details and bugs like usually.
But then again, maybe a fraction of the actual testers are there to test the game. The rest are there to judge the game and won't play if their standards are not met. Great testers all around.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I am going to say that as a tester you should adapt to the testing environment to provide your full support towards the product to make it as good as possible, I am not telling anyone to adapt to the controls of the finished product if they don't meet their standards. Realize the difference.
A great part of being a Beta Tester is to deal with inconveniences, it is not the purpose of the Beta to make the testing as convenient for the tester as possible. The purpose is to make the finished product as good as it can possibly be.

Then I expect your beta feedback to Square is consistent with the controls being against the grain, not user friendly or accomodating and not up to standards in the PC industry. Not: "the controls are wonky, but really once you get used to 'em its ok, people will figure it out."

Well appearently you won't bother to read my whole post and keep blindly defending them with every last breath you have.
Good for you. But tiresome for me.
As I know damn well that Beta's are for testing and ironing out the final kinks! Wich part in that didn't you get from my posts? huh??
But to properly test the game I (at least) need decent PC controls to be able to test the game!! Period!
Even in Beta I have to have at least some enjoyment in doing it, otherwise it's no point whatsoever!
If I am getting totally frustrated having constantly to struggle with the controls. Well thanks but no thanks. I then rather use my precious time elsewhere.

Most of my feedback has been about the controls, mouse included (although I personally won't use it).
I try to make it more constructive than that though, what exactly is wrong and what I feel they could do about it. It's kind of hard when I'm no expert on the subject however.

Then do yourself and everyone else who'd like to use a mouse a favor. Document the experience, if you struggle with nearly every activity because you can't use a mouse explain why. However if you can't keep your emotions in control then they'll dismiss it, especially if 90% of their control feedback sounds more like high pitched screaming than useful information.
Hya has a point though, perhaps they have a reason for the control scheme, such as an environment that focuses more on testing the client features rather than optomizing two different types of control. This early build might be something they're using for platform testing as well even if its not open to the public. Frankly, I would advise adapting to the situation and try learning something new like using only a keyboard.

I think it's just a half-assed build they threw together, made sure it functioned correctly and moved on to the real thing.
Since it'll be scrapped either way come release, trying to polish it is kind of a wasted effort.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Doesn't mean I should be forced to do to. As I hate gamepads and always have. That's why I am a PC gamer not a console gamer.
And yes I will wait till the next Beta phase and see if things improve when it comes to controls.
Actually, they can do anything they want with the Beta and you can choose to not to test it, "forced" is a lolworthy term at best. They do not owe you anything.
It goes much further than that. They "force" you to deal with server crashes, bugs and character wipes too. Ain't life a bitch.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
As beta testers if the game launches with horrible controls we can blame you guys for not communicating that to SE properly to have it fixed. Am I right?
Seriously, some of you people need to stop being dumb and get a clue. Learn what a BETA is! If you want something more finished, more enjoyable, wait for the game to come out. Playing BETA is your choice, so stop whining about it. You never know what the finished game will actually be like, so knock off the complaints. If you do not like the mouse and keyboard feel, then don't be so freakin' cheap and buy yourself a gamepad... or, just don't play. Seriously.... complaining about a BETA... sheesh.
None of these topics would happen if folks in the beta stayed OFF the Internet in the first place. Just sayin...
On the controls though, a lot of the concern/struggle/fear is due to Square setting the precedent in FF11. Many game companies repeat their big mistakes often. It's usually because they don't believe they were mistakes just a difference in opinion.
Again with the exclusive mindset, don't like it don't play, figure out how to play differently, buy a controller. We are talking about MMO games. Games that are designed to (try to) appeal to many types of people to create an online community where everyone is different, individual, and able to participate.
Yet, many of those on the "protectz Squares controls!!!" are so exclusive and one-sided on the topic as if to keep everyone who doesn't think like them out of the game. Quite opposite of this kind of game's intention. It's not just FF14... it happens in other topics too. MMO's should be inclusive.
Maybe FF14 is, really I have just decided to stand on my side of the fence as you have. But hey, thats what forums are for right? One of us will likely have to compromise and that compromise may be a cancelled game I really want to play.
Maybe a set of several different control set ups? Control Pad, Classic(FFXI), New(FFXIV), Standard(WASD + Mouse)? Probably the best way for them to go with it and easy enough to do.

SE pretty much set it up this way. What game that is still in Alpha doesn't allow all their accounts to use the "report" bug link on their website/forums? I made a long post about bugs I found and written down and within hours its off page 1 and lost in the sea of threads. But because my account which was active through Alpha didn't have "Access" to the bug report feature was pointless. They purposely set this up as a "Demo" where all they wanted was feedback. The made certain aspects the focus each week and only wanted peoples thoughts on what they thought of it, exact purpose of a demo, which is all this alpha/beta was.
Honestly the game will stay Niche just like its predecessor, unless they change it drastically. We know their goal is to compete with WoWInterview with company president, which wont happen. The bad part is it's not happening because of certain gameplay style choices or other gameplay factors(learning curve,PVP setup etc) but because of outdated mechanics and controls.
Who wants to keyboard turn in a MMO?Who wants to go through 5-6 windows of menus, that feels like Zelda on a NES to activate a quest or equip gear?Who wants to STOP completely anytime you want to sheath and un-sheath your weapon?Who wants to run 800 yards past a objective because a 3 Inch Z-axis elevation change is blocking you and your character cannot go over it or jump/fall down it?
The above and many others will be what makes this game Niche and SE have themselves to blame.
They purposely set out setting up their alpha/beta events to be purely Demos in nature. People will judge the game by what they have seen already and move on.Plenty of options out there now.
Btw its people like hyanman that make even posting on the alpha/beta forums a pain in the ass. Because as soon as you post feeback the rabid fanboys coming rushing in and give off there usual 1 liners of " It's fine, its just like FFXI" or "This isnt , go back to that game" or many others.

Because that's what I was most certainly talking about!
