If you look at my Sig your see my computer setup , now i change my CPU the other day but befor i was using the follow:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3.2 GHz Processor
and i upgraded to the cpu in my sig , now just by changing my CPU my FFXIV Benchmark scores went like this :
Old CPU -
High : 2104
Low : 2457
New CPU -
High : 3367
Low : 4507
Now look at the scores... a massive diffrence just by changing the CPU... if your using AMD u should get the one ive got.
Ewww, Thuban. :P
Nothing wrong with a properly tweaked Thuban! (Click the banner in my sig for details on my system).
Low Res: 4945
High Res: 2934
That's with a 260GTX.
CPU and video card both play a role in FFXIV performance. I think a baseline to start from for people needing to upgrade would be to look at the posted requirements. First, make sure that both CPU and video card are at least up to par with the requirements. Then, consider updating which ever one will give you the most added bang for the buck.

I've always been a big fan of Intel, but AMD does provide the needed competition Intel needs to keep prices low. Hopefully Bulldozer won't be a backseater and maybe hit a top 10 processor speed chart. The overclocking on the i7's 9 series just eat Thuban alive.
It's kinda funny how AMD is behind Intel, yet Nvidia is behind ATI.
