Guesss the only thing to do is wait for Open beta, if there's no open ebta for everyone I'm not gonna pre-order and buy the game simple as that. If this is in any way able to intterupt with the fun i could have playing X class ince i hate Y class then so be it, I won't bother playing lol.
Anyhow, from beta tester here, how dire is the situation on this mechanic? How long can you play a single class until this crap appear and how long it take to refresh.
I'd say the truth is somewhere in the middle on this one.
There has been some concern from beta testers about this mechanic, and a lot have left because of it. If you don't mind grinding, you can for a decent amount of time (maybe 4hours or so) and then it starts to wear out quit a lot. If you change classes a lot it does tend to help, and given the limited amount of leves in the game, you are generally forced to change classes a lot.
This is both good and bad. In general this game is one where you will not want to play just one class. The reason being is that you can mix skills from different classes to make a sort of hybrid. So for example I will mix some skills from thaumaturge (like gravity) with my nukes from conjurer. Or on melee you can mix TP skills between classes, which helps a lot. However, when you really want to play one class it can kind suck, especially as you get higher in lvl, it takes so long to get the exp you need that it's quit a turn off.
Now.. from beta, there's basically 2 concerns going on. One is that we don't know if the mechanic is implemented in beta the same way it's to be implemented in launch. Two, is that everyone is awaiting a 'massive content update' for open beta. The massive increase in content could very will fix a lot of the issues arising from some of these mechanics, but it's really hard to tell if / when these things happen, whether or not they will make a big impact on the penalty or not.
Also, the penalty atm seems to affect crafting more steeply than it does battle classes. Not sure why, but you don't always gain exp from crafting, and sometimes it takes quite a number of crafts before you see any benefit from them.
That's the point, the only reason i'd play FFXIV is to play the pugilist. Other class doesn't seem to interest me much, if I had to chose a second it'd be one with summon or maybe ranger but seeing youtube combat of ranger, i'd have to wait and see in open beta.

As I said just a couple posts back. I have played 5+ hrs of grinding and Guildleves and got less than a 10% surplus penalty and it was gone the next day. Here's the kicker. If you play another mmorpg that has the "rested xp" mechanic and get 2x XP gain while rested for a couple hours before losing that rested status it's the same thing as getting a rediculous amount of XP for 5+ hours before gradually droping down to 50% surplus xp(which I havent even seen).
Rested Xp doesnt penalize the hardcore player but help the one who have less playtime. This system in the other hand is actually the opposite, it help the one with low play tim and penalize the hardcore player. MMO gamign is a big part in my hooby and I don't sub to more then one mmo at a time, so if I were to start playing FFXIV, I'd be playing it alot. Sometime me and my friend goes on gaming party and play for over 24+hours straight just having fun. If this is impossible to do with out penalizing us then... this game isn't worth the money to spend.

Soooo if they drop normal xp gain by 50% and called the amount of xp you get the first 5hrs of play "rested xp" in which you get double the xp you'd be ok with that? My point is it's the same damn thing..... >.>
Fatigue goes up to about 50% in 2 hours, and it takes 2 days to go down! So, if you play 4 hours you have to stop playing completely for 2 days!
WHAT!?
Only 1 hour a day!
What’s really amazing is that you have to pay a monthly subscription for this…
They can’t get away with this on a subscription game. They’ll be sued!
So you get bonuses for staying logged out – the servers are going to be nice and quiet, aren’t they!
More on the “dormancy” system:
Recovery takes time.
2 hours of combat or 1 hour of craft will induce “dormancy.”
The dormancy is actually shared over different characters.
It will decrease gains to 0% in the end.
It seems to be proportional to the amount of XP you earn.
Both light and heavy player are going to weep...
(LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL) Final Fantasy 14 is already a dead game, how pathetic.
Really? Up to 50% after 2 hrs and takes 2 days to go down? I've played for several hours straight grinding and running Guildleves and only ever got up to about 9 surplus xp for 150+ xp gained... Also that surplus was gone the next day and didn't come back for several hours....
I'm calling BS on this one....
Definitely, this is just another case of the bitchy whiners extremely overexaggerating a feature to make it look as worse as possible when its nothing at all as they are claiming it to be. I too have personally ran around fighting mobs non-stop on one class for over 4hrs and was still gaining plenty of XP.
Another thing to consider is that this suplus system may be something we're building up, toward another feature not yet revealed. SE are known well for having many very deep and involving systems in all their content features, just look at all the thing you can do in XI that build on each other.
I'd have to agree that the fatigue is an over exaggeration. In fairness I've been pretty damn critical of FF14 from the onset but I would also say this only part of the story as far as fatigue goes. I can honestly see fatigue possibly being further mitigated and diminished by other means as well other than just logging implying that the developers may have overlapping arcs as to what reduces fatigue whether its an item, quest or something else. I mean that itself is feasible. But I don't see a case of "omgz I can't play for days damn this game sucks" here, it really is an exaggeration.
What's my proof? SE based on FF11 data feed states the average FF player logs onto the game at roughly 5 hours a day about (I want to say it was closer to 5 hrs and 22 min). If they already have a figure in mind as to what the mean is for hours, then they know that statistically speaking only the "hardcore" and rmt players log on for substantially higher periods. I can see fatigue being refreshed in 6/7 hours after a 4-5 hour period. 2 days though?that's a pretty counter-intuitive move and it would also be more of a killer in the JP market than it would be in the US market (more US players would avoid the game all together and have other options, the JP's would simply start a riot @ SE's headquarters and hang Sage Sundi) so that begs the question "why shoot your foot on something like that?".
I'm pretty sure no one in their right mind will read to this page, but if you did...
FFXIV will fail as sure as STO did, if they add this feature.
What do I base this on? How would I know?
Because I'm old, and wise. I know whats going on in the world, I watch people, I watch the way people react, I watch how they do things they dint know they wanted to do. I'm a walking breathing think tank. I thought of it long before the first bombs droped, before the first word was spoken. Thats how I know.
And this is what I see right now. Too many people are unaware of the feature. This is going to hit them like a trainwreck.
Massive amounts of people, the ones that never even bother with forums like this, but buy the game, are going to drop this game and never give a look back or even a feedback post. They will simply move on.
And since I wont be able to pull this post up in the future I just want to say now, I TOLD YOU SO!

Pssst! Nobody drink the Koolaid if he offers it to you!
Xzen here is why it is not the same thing as rested exp. At least how I understand it from what I read, didn't play the game.
So let's take your example. You say 50% would be like normal exp and 100% would be like rested exp. Ok I agree with you so far. Think is, the moment you start getting 40% exp or less, you are being penalized and it's no longer like a rested vs not rested exp mechanic.

There you might have a point. But is it possible to even get less than 50% surplus?
P.S. I'm all for them removing surplus xp from the game. But unless some one can tell me wether or not there is a limit to how far surplus % can go it's a bit like making a mountain out of a molehill.

Some are saying that you can get to 90-100% surplus. Don't know for sure.

If that's true that is insane. At the same time with my experience you would have to play for a couple days straight (48hrs) to get it there. I'd also have to have confirmation on this before believeing it.
From how it sounds, since this game is mainly focused on combining class skills, it may be essential to level other classes. Perhaps this system is in place just to make others realize this so they do level other jobs so they do not end up totally gimp'd in the game. It really does seem like if you play a Pugilist and if that is all you focus on, then you will have a tough time in the game... that's what I'm thinking anyways.
If that is the case, I find it quite ridiculous. Don't give me a system where I can choose my class and then tell me (by mechanics) I have to play ALL of them. I would hope that isn't the reason. Some people don't like playing casters and some people don't like to play melee. Limiting that by design is shooting yourself in the foot.

Sorry. it was the same way in FFXI. If you don't level a subjob that compliments your main job you were useless and couldn't even participate/survive. So far in FFXIV it doesn't seem to be an issue but that could change at higher levels....

The only koolaid being offerd right now, is from Square-Enix as this is game suicide and they don't even realize it. In Japan, people that come up with ideas like this usually get the window seat, unfortuantly I think more people should get the window seat when things like this happened, but its a start.

I'm also pretty sure you're wrong. This game is going to pull in a nice chunk of change for SE in which they will turn a proffit. No matter how much doom and gloom you see in your visions the fact that it is going to make a proffit makes it a success in the buisness world.... which also hapens to be the real world.....

The stupidest things I ever seen in mmorpgs have come from Square. First was their 3d secure crap in ff11 which cut off half their subs just about. This fatigue system to me is nothing more but punishment for hardcore and casuals alike, my best friend plays mmo's casually but he puts more than 2-3 hours a day in. People will naturally use other jobs since some of their skills can be use on the main job, there is no real reason at all to force it on players. This announcement pretty much made FF14 drop off my radar. If i want fatigue system crap there is tons of F2P mmorpgs I can get that crap from.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words." -Poster on mmorpg.com
Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
I'am a long term FF11 player and I won't be moving over to this game because of this, it's a pay to pay game I want to do what I want to do and not have artificial barriers put in my way.
not because i get bored and leave but i like to play/live in the MMO that i choose - it can take me ages to level compared to others that start at the same time i do
i don't think MMOs should even have an "endgame"
it exists only because developers don't have the time/money/staff to create content to keep people paying their sub - and in some cases to cater to the power levelers
all that said i will no longer be buying this game because of this artificial penalty
I don’t get why games try to penalize hardcore players...I mean casual players have the same hours per day as hardcore players..Hardcore players just chose to dedicate more of their hours to the game.
Anyway I am still getting this.
I think the real issue for game companies is that there are way more casual players as potential subscribers than hardcore players and they don't want to lose them by making them feel they could never get on the same level as other players in the game. But like others have said they could have a 'rested XP' philosophy that would would allow casuals to level faster when they play. It sounds more like what SE is really doing may be making sure there will be no shortage of classes at any given time when people are trying to put groups together. No waiting for DPS or tanks to log in. Seems like they want hardcore players to become 'master' players who can do everything.

Actually, the real issue here is that nobody knows exactly what this is, how it really works, or how much of an actual impact it is going to have on this game or its players. What is happening here is the usual doom and gloom, this game sucks, I'm takingmy money back crowd is already up in arms a month before the release, just like they always are. One comment by anyone that even remotely has a chance of effecting anyone gets hammered into the ground with everyone thinking they know what it REALLY means.
The fact is, nobody knows what this will do right now, and anyone saying they are cancelling thier pre-order or refusing to play FFXIV because of this honestly never planned on it in the first place. Thats like saying you refuse to drive your car because someone told you gas prices may go up next week! Ok well maybe thats not a great annalogy as gas prices most certainly will, but you get the idea.
Until SE comes out and tells us what it does officially we will not know what this will do(and no, one sentance taken out of context in an obscure interview is not an official statement of content or purpose). For all we know right now is it is actually having little to no effect on BETA testers. The claims we have seen on these forums so far have not been substantiated in any way, most in fact have been disproved already.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
I said it a while back, but to reiterate, I agree 100% that the "OMG THE GAME IS ROONT BACK TO WOW!!!" or whatever is getting pretty comical in itself. The game is in freaking beta. By all means, voice your displeasure with the system, that's why there is feedback. But freaking out and screaming "OMG SQEEUNIX IS PUNISHING HARDCORE PLAYERS!!!!11!1!1" every else on the web, where S-E more than likely doesn't even go, is a waste of time.
For one thing, you guys are in BETA. In exchange for playing the game early, you get a jump on the game that most people won't have. S-E isn't having a Beta so that a percentage of people can just get ahead, they're looking for bugs. If everyone sits there and grinds on one job so that they can be OMG MAXIMUM LEVEL than there really isn't gonna be a lot of "testing" going on, is there? They need people to play ALL the jobs, in every combination, fighting every mob, crafting every item. Things that seem totally unrelated can have weird effects on each other. They're forcing you to change up what you are doing every so often...seems reasonable to me. After all, like I said, you're not in the Beta to max out your Gladiator or Pugilist, you're in the Beta to find bugs.
Secondly, the mechanic may be removed from the game entirely upon launch. If what is being described is true (and, while I believe people are genuinely upset about it, I somehow doubt it's as gamebreakingly bad as it's being made out to be by some very vocal critics), I'm almost 100% positive they will at modify it in some fashion. However, the concept of limiting advancement is nothing new. FFXI was out for over a year before they released the bulk of the endgame content. I'm sure people were at max level for MONTHS before that point, and the game is still going strong almost 8 years later. I assure you, S-E isn't ready to start cranking out expansions and additional content, so if you want to speed through to the end now, you're going to be bored to tears for a very long time. You'll be max level, but what good is it if there isn't any content to really experience with it yet? What good was being level 75 in FFXI if you remove Dynamis, and Assault, and Nyzul, and Sky/Sea Gods from the equation? What, you gonna go fight this game's equivalent of the Shadow Lord 50 times in a row? That's pretty much all there was to do in FFXI at first...
To summarize, calm the hell down. Post that you think the system sucks and move on with your life. Unfortunately, you can't grind right now. I'm sure you'll get your chance to play 20 hours a day/6 days a week in some fashion soon enough...
Nope you cant oppose it. people had been trying to figure out the surplus system for a while now. trying to get it to go back to normal with everything from food to you name it. it takes roughly 3 hours to get to where your barely getting any xp at all from mobs.
Everyone i know has left the beta. Every server is down to 150 or less people playing at 1 time and most of those are from the fileplanet keys..
Think about it... Not only does it pander to the Concerned Citizen groups (and politicians) who howl about "MMO addiction!!", it also reduces load on their servers. How many people are going to stay playing once the EXP gets low enough?

Imagine this. There is a game with low base XP, and when you are logged off you gain rested time. When you level with this rested time XP is greatly increased. It rewards more casual players. Ah oh yeah the system already exists in WoW and most of its clones.
Now imagine this. There is a game with high base XP, and as you play you get tired. When you level while tired the XP is greatly reduced. You can get rested by taking breaks or even simply switching jobs. It rewards more casual players, but also lets hardcore reap the benefits of rested by switching jobs. It is practically the same thing with higher base XP and fatigue instead of lower base XP and rested. You guys are ridiculous with your rage and assumptions and obviously 90% of you emo whiners haven't even experienced the system, don't understand it, and yet rage on forums and post about how you decided not to play the game because of this. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous.
Well, I'm thinking one of the problems is, people arent going to be able to rush to endgame. Maybe that ticks the hardcore folks off? Of course i know plenty of casuals whose only focus is upon endgame too, so I dont know.

That's the point, the only reason i'd play FFXIV is to play the pugilist. Other class doesn't seem to interest me much, if I had to chose a second it'd be one with summon or maybe ranger but seeing youtube combat of ranger, i'd have to wait and see in open beta.
My point is it's the same damn thing..... >.>

Riiiiight..............

My theme song.
Some are saying that you can get to 90-100% surplus. Don't know for sure.
If that's true that is insane. At the same time with my experience you would have to play for a couple days straight (48hrs) to get it there. I'd also have to have confirmation on this before believeing it.
My theme song.

Sorry your post made you sound pompous...... >.>

TWittterrrrr!
WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
I'am a long term FF11 player and I won't be moving over to this game because of this, it's a pay to pay game I want to do what I want to do and not have artificial barriers put in my way.
i've never made it to "endgame" in an MMO
not because i get bored and leave but i like to play/live in the MMO that i choose - it can take me ages to level compared to others that start at the same time i do
i don't think MMOs should even have an "endgame"
it exists only because developers don't have the time/money/staff to create content to keep people paying their sub - and in some cases to cater to the power levelers
all that said i will no longer be buying this game because of this artificial penalty
Think about it... Not only does it pander to the Concerned Citizen groups (and politicians) who howl about "MMO addiction!!", it also reduces load on their servers. How many people are going to stay playing once the EXP gets low enough?
Depends on what other carrots there are.

Deleting this post due to evidence just released by Devs on this issue. I suggest others do the same.
