General: Neverwinter (Nights Online): Something in Between

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Gamespot  has interviewed Jack Emmert and confirmed that Cryptic Studios is indeed working on an online version of Neverwinter Nights. The game will neither be a traditional MMO, nor will it be a single player RPG, Neverwinter Nights 3. The game, according to the article, is something in between. In truth, the new game sounds rather Diablo-ish in its interpretation: Players connect to a server and are 'encouraged to play cooperatively'. Building tools will also be released as in previous games.

The new game will focus on the D&D 4th edition rules and will be launched in concert with R.A. Salvatore's new trilogy, Gauntlgrym, the first book of which is set to be published this fall. The game will take place in a world where Neverwinter has fallen into ruins:

GS: We also understand that the game is being launched in tandem with Gauntlgrym, the first book in an all-new Neverwinter novel trilogy by author R.A. Salvatore. Tell us about the game's story and how it will evolve alongside the new books.

JE: The game is set a little over 100 years into the future, and Forgotten Realms is recovering from an epic catastrophe: the death of the god of magic triggered a massive "spellplague" that swept across Faerun and changed everything it touched.

The Salvatore trilogy touches on all the events leading up to the game and, most importantly, how Neverwinter fell. Through these great novels, readers will get a taste of the Neverwinter world, characters, and enemies.

At some point, Neverwinter was laid waste. Why? No one really remembers at this point. The players will need to find out what happened and whether it'll reoccur…

    I don't think the slow calculated gameplay of this game is in tune with the majority of MMO players.  I forsee this being flamed hardily.

    I guess what I'm trying to say is.  If you hope they will radically change gameplay to make it what you want an MMO to be.  Look somewhere else.  NWN has a following, and we like the gameplay the way it is.

    I loved NWN1, was not a fan of NWN2 to be perfectly honest. I'm excited to see what they do with this one!

    I think from the interview it is clear that the new game is not intended to be a mmo, more like online rpg with solo and cooperative options.

    Sounds a lot like NWN RPGs with more online play, rather than an MMO.

    Why did it have to be cryptic??

    Why god why? Why for the love of jebus was a good IP given to Crpytic Studios....  I can't handle them messing up yet another great IP, I just can't.

    It's interesting that WotC has had four different developers for Dungeons & Dragons:

    * Turbine for DDO

    * Bioware for NWN 1

    * Obsidian for NWN 2

    * Cryptic for coop NWN (not) 3

    Cryptic?  Fail.  They couldn't have fallen on their own swords any harder with STO.

    If it wasn't Cryptic I might actually be interested..  Now we're going to be stuck waiting for years for another developer to be chosen for a real D&D game.

    I will not be buying or trying this game as it is being made by Cryptic.

    From what I got from the article, "co-op play' is encouraged. So, this makes me  think you can play solo. If that is the case, would you still need to be online to play solo? If so, this looks like a rebranding of the Ubisoft style DRM, just with more emphasis put on the co-op part. Let me know if I missed something, but that is how it looks to me right now.

    On another note, I join in the cryptic skepticism, but the NWN series has been consistently good imo even with different devs as SBFord pointed out. Maybe this will continue the trend.

    I'm curious to see how Cryptic will handle this.  I, personally, enjoyed STO -- for a month, of purely PVPing...but I still got my money's worth out of it...but this is cryptic.  They aren't known for particularly compelling story, something D&D requires to thrive...so, will have to see, to say the least.

    That said, 5 classes?  Really?  And only Heroic (1-10) at start?  Just...yeah...at least they're setting their sights realistically, but sheesh...Fighter, Cleric, Ranger, Wizard, and Rogue...though these classes aren't bad, they're not the most impossibly awesome classes either, like the Avenger...

    If this turns into a microtransaction game, it'd make it worse, in my opinion, too...so many ways to do it wrong, I hope Cryptic doesn't screw it up, but I'm not being hopeful.  I've been waiting for a 4E game, don't let me down on what looks like the first one, Cryptic!

    CRYPTIC???

    WHYYYYYYYYY!!!

    *beats chest and body*

    *falls to knees*

    WHYYYYyyYYyyy!

    Also, the game cannot be launched 'In Tandem' with the new book. Amazon has that book scheduled to be launched on 5th October 2010.

    Shouldn't this game be like 2 to 3 years out?

    STO launched a small handful of months after CO, sooo...

    Since it is now confirmed to be Cryptic I can put this on my very small list of Do Not Even Try let alone Buy. Ah well, so much for a Forgotten Realms Online "WORLD"! Cryptic makes mini games not WORLDS! They need to leave the mmorpg genre for good.

    Im saying a prayer for all you D&D fans out there.... may your IP remain unfouled at the hands of Cryptic.  Though I fear the worst.  Let us pray....

    Cryptic can ruin Star Trek, Cryptic can ruin Champions Online.

    But when you touch my Forgotten Realms, my Faerûn, you're failure of a company is in for a sh*tstorm.

    I can tell you why Cryptic.

    Atari controls the license for DnD video games.

    Atari OWNS Cryptic.

    Therefore, Atari gave the DnD license to their own studio for development.

    Poor Salvatore, working on an MMO that has a chance of being successful while his literature in Forgotten Realms IP gets desecrated by another developer for third cashgrab. Please let Atari go bankrupt before this game is pushed out the door.

    I'm truly sick at my stomach after reading this. My beloved Forgotten Realms are going to be totally hosed over by this shitty company.

    Because I'm a NWN fan I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested but Cryptic ? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
