Applications for the FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test have been temporarily suspended. Please wait until we are ready to accept new applications and then try again.

They may have intended to give more away today but cut it short until congestion issue can be figured out. Suspending the keys may have simply been the easiest way to shut the system down.
At least that is what I am hoping.

why do they call it open beta if it really isnt open?
Then they shouldnt have named it OPEN BETA...... And they should have sent keys to the people that registered in December or earlier. Screw this.
FYI - It's NOT open beta if you need a key to enter, that would make it a closed beta.
Open beta = open to everyone.

No, it is Open. Closed wouldbe invite only, not going to a website and getting a key. That's how almost every Open beta works.
The only problem being that their site took a huge hit from so many people trying to get in at once and it completely messed it up.
You know what would really tick you off? If you were me. Ya download the beta version of the game the first day they offer it (tue morning) and get all the way up to the time to sign up for the beta and "awww were sorry we need to post pone it untill tommorow" ..... great so i was off that day but not the next... gg. lol

Open beta means you don't have to be invited, nearly all closed beta games give out keys these days.

u still need to get a key to activate ur beta account from their website it doesnt matter if its open or not. If u go to any of these open beta MMO's they always require u to sign up and get a code emailed to u thats just the way it is. Just calm down and wait till tomorrow evening and if its still like this then u can complain all u want. Everyone who was in WoW's closed/open beta when it first came out till now knows even the giants can fall every once in awhile.
what bothers me is the majority of people are only in the beta to see whether or not they enjoy the game, not to "beta test"
Open Beta means that the testers can talk openly about whats happening with the public.
Closed beta means there is an NDA in effect and the beta is essentially Closed off from the public.

Sure, but it's still a beta for Square. They get to beta test the account system - to see if it can handle launch week. And I think it's pretty clear to everyone that it can't ;-)
Which is fine, because companies use beta these days for publicity and hype instead of what its supposed to be for: actual testing.
you do realize that Open Beta is more for marketing than beta testing correct? Sure maybe they tweak their servers a bit, or some code, but the actual beta testing is done.
Open beta has changed alot what it was....now its just about stress testing and marketing.
You know for the server being so congested, that error page sure comes up damn near instatly, I am pretty sure if it was congested you'd notice it even on the error page. rest of the site works fine, Squares handing of the ff14 beta has been pretty craptastic so far, possibly one of the worse I have seen, They should have sent all their closed beta testers keys thru e-mail.

So it looks like the answer is:
1) No, the open beta keys are not used up. (In fact, I've yet to see any official mention that there will be a limit to open beta keys).
2) However, until congestion dies down, they're not giving out any more. In fact, it probably routes straight here without even bothering to check a server.
yeh this sucks... I stayed up unti 3;30am. I couldn't get past the login screen because the site was too damn slow. Now whenever I try to apply to it tells me it's congested.. major annoyance.
I think they let in like 500 people ( a certain amount), then stop.
Yeah sounds more like a closed beta compared to an open beta for sure. Five hundred and stopped ? I sense a horrid official launch for sure.
I was accually getting ready to preorder, but after this fiasco I will use my money to something else. I am truely dissapointed.
Why are you acting like his random number is fact? This is getting ridiculous with how ignorant, impatient, and spoiled gamers have become. Perhaps it's always been this way and they are just becoming more vocal. You are all acting like you have been jipped somehow even though none of us have payed a single cent to Square yet.
I'm tired of correcting my friends IRL from their incessant whining (which is 90% of the time due to ignorance on the subject) and I'm pretty much done listening to the whining here. I think i'm going to take a long hiatus from these forums as I did before by deleting my last account.
