this is stupid. I cant even key a key to open beta and i pre order a copy since im a fan of ffxi. Why the hell are they going to give away key when its open beta? I thought all open beta was free to test and dosent require key. Now idk if im willing to buy it no more. Sometimes SE really sux.
This is incorrect - most games that will be going P2P still have a key issuing system - they are having congestion issues and decided to take it offline for a day to fix it ; which they will then start issuing keys again. 'Open beta' just means there is no real 'application process' - meaning you don't need to get 'selected' you just 'apply' and get your key immediately.
If you pre-ordered the CE - you will still be able to play a week earlier then normal players - but I'm 100% the first few days of that will be screwy anways, just like every other 'pre- launch' I've been in lol.
They should of just assigned a key to every account that signed up for closed beta and this wouldnt be a problem.
I was thinking this myself. And for that matter, not just CB folks, but anyone who had registered with them. Why not include the key with the instructions for registering for open beta?
There is a few things they have done that seem questionable. Like right now there is no beta keys available. So why still have the page up to apply and have the server hammered? Why not remove the "apply for open beta" link and put up a notice on that page that says they are temporarily suspending issuing keys?

Applications for the FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test have been temporarily suspended. Please wait until we are ready to accept new applications and then try again.
It should probably be noted again that according to the SE Account Management notice they are intentionally limiting the number of keys they are giving. The reason they give for doing this is they are having problems handling the load on the game server (not the beta signup system). A lot of people who have keys are not able to log in or play the beta because of load issues so SE is limiting the number of new keys while they try to resolve the game server issues.
And that is why they don't just give keys to everyone. So they can control and evaluate server load to be more prepared for launch.

my point is that you get that message AFTER hammering the serving and trying multiple times to log in. Why not post it on the first page and remove the apply button until ready to give out keys again.

It's using the same server resources regardless. People would have to hammer at the main page to get it to load with that - just like they have to hammer to get to the entry page regardless. This way makes it so they don't ALSO have to go in and change the pages themselves and giving MORE work to the already busy IT team.
If these excellent people are so f'ing unprepared to have their servers handle a beta key handout and a client download... what's the FREE first month for everyone going to be like???
Still slays me that veteran MMO companies can still be so butt-thrusting idiotic in foreseeing the inevitable train wreck they could avoid if they just payed some attention to the companies before them.
Like above poster have mentioned...
Why call it "open" beta when only a small percentage of the population is able to test it?
and if it's a limited number of keys anyways, why not just mail them out randomly instead of a "first come, first serve"?
Mark my words... AION 2.0

This is almost not even worthy of replying to but I guess I will:
1) They are only temporarily limiting keys
2) Companies don't intend to have congestion problems - every company uses different server archtecture and as such all of it needs to be tested independently.
3) They are a company - using the 'least' amount of hardware possible - to make the most money possible; which is why there are so many issues.
i a bit impressed how ppl react to a beta... i mean games like WoW/eq2/eve they all had launch problems in beta and ppl still play those games so why give up on a game that is still in beta?? i would agree with all of you if this was the release day then i would worry but its not and it would not be the first time we see beta get ready for launch in 14 days with the help og OB stress test so come on and cheer up and lets see what is going to happen before we decide that game is DOA...
and no i dont have a key and i have yet to try out the game.. but i hope we will get a key soon so i can try it out first hand
Yeah i really wish this wasnt true but i think this game is going to fail just because of SE
And yet the grand majority of 'big SE titles' have either hit records or been greatly profitable. FFXI might not have sub numbers like WoW - but it's in the top 5 most subscribed MMO's(or at least it was a year and half ago). So your comment is full of ignorance and 'fail'.
LOL DUDE YOUR COMPARING FF TO WOW I WONDER WHO IS THE FAIL

1) They are only temporarily limiting keys:
Reason for limiting in the first place? Source? Makes sense?
2) Companies don't intend to have congestion problems - every company uses different server archtecture and as such all of it needs to be tested independently.
So Square-Enix has nothing to do with FFXI, and no experience in web traffic. Sound logic.
3) They are a company - using the 'least' amount of hardware possible - to make the most money possible; which is why there are so many issues.
This isn't EA, or Activision, Ubisoft, Funcom or a fly-by-night F2P copy MMO. I expect crap from them. The whole reason I'm "SHOCKED" is that it's Square-Enix. If the year was 1999 when MMO's were still in "experimental stage" I could see this. But it's 2010, 8 years later from initial release of FFXI. This shouldn't be "unfamiliar territory".
All I'm saying is I'm just shocked and disappointed at the planning of this as a whole.

Your perfectly right yet they sill will have troubles overcoming the fact that they announce an open beta yet it is a closed one letting billiions of ppl pissed If that doesnt cause ppl to just forget buying there product and waiting for a couple of months for a better product...

I may b*tch and moan and complain about FF but you reached that conclusion on your inability of getting into beta. Ain't that really short-sighted now. So when the other mmo's make you wait because you can't enter into their beta, do us a favor and just stop whining like a 9 yr old school girl. These arguments are and complaints are annoying. I won't be playing FF14 and I've posted enough on that as to why. But I won't criticize them for beta issues and start up problems. That's a perfect world and one we don't live in.
I have my Fallout New Vegas on preorder and its what I'll play in the future. I expect THAT to be perfect because its a console game. I don't expect GW2, FF14, SW:TOR or any game for that matter coming out in the next year to have a smooth, problem free even during the first 6 weeks. Those are how mmo's operate. Don't like it, go enjoy yourself a console and quit whining.

Exactly. Why I said this smells like Aion 2.0. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, go back on the MMORPG forums around the release date Aion was released and look in General Forums or on the Aion Forums and look up threads and pictures regarding Queue Time. Go ahead I'll wait...

When people are in a queue for days to log in, or can't log into any server because the pop is too high for a month or two that tends to upset people. Now consider this.... YES this is "beta", but if they are this unprepared for traffic (you know, the ONLINE part of MMO) then release day is going to be an Apocalyptic mess when people can't log in, download updates/clients or even get into a server.
So yet another "I guess I'll wait six months or so for them to work all the bugs out" situation. If you pre-purchased it, awesome! Thanks for paying for my server upgrades, coding fixes and balancing while I wait to give them my $ for an actual "out of beta" product.

This will have no effect on game sales. As far as the few who don't buy because of Beta problems there will be even more who buy when they hear there were so many beta applicants the servers couldn't handle them all. And the fact that this is an Open Beta doesn't mean it is an unlimited beta. It only means people from the general public will be allowed in and not be screened to determine if they meet certain criteria.
As has been said here many times, this is a beta not a demo. If anyone can't stand to deal with the problems that occur in beta they shouldn't volunteer to participate in one, open or closed. This is all pretty standard.

Eh they are on borderline between open and closed beta. In Open Betas the NDA is lifted.
You morons realize this is a beta right?
You're already testing the game by crashing the page.
GG

Maybe, maybe not. we dont really know what is part of the test.
You do realize the qualities you find most annoying in others are usually the things you hate about yourself the most.

As long as they are getting some testing done all is fine , if we don't get in the game will be live vefore we know it

You guys even once thought about just how many people want to get into beta?
This is FF XIV we're talking about, I guess there could be even 1kk people who're rushing to get into OB.
A horde of enthusiasts of the series, people who got hyped via advertising the game on the web, peeps who've seen trailers.
I sure as hell believe there is no developper company who could handle this in a way to please everybody.
I'm convinced SE is doing their best to resolve issues and make the game enjoyable.
For now, just bear with it.
You will finally get to taste the game for yourselves.
O,o nothing here o,O
