Honestly, toggleable AOE is very welcomed imo. Means CC will still be important in XIV and possibly even more so than in XI. Also, no more 'whoops' pulls in an area with non-aggro adds while grouping for exp or fighting an NM. I still have nightmares of boyahda tree pulls, and lord only knows how many folks have been eaten by flies while fighting Fafnir/Nidhogg. Seriously, screw darters.

I'll be playing on opening day and looking forward to the 6 month mark for the PS3. I think that how the game really does in western markets will depend greatly on what changes/fixes/adds that are going in at the start of the day and also, what they patch in the first 30-60 days. That is when the review will snag the folks who didn't play at the start (or keep them at arms length).
Yup, now all that I can agree with. The biggest question then will be how large that dedicated base is, and whether coming titles will actually have a draw to them combined with whether XIV is holding their attention. Of course, I'm starting to veer off-topic, so I'll can it :P
Well, to put it into context... 7 years after its launch, FFXI still had ~500k players and 32 servers. They only recently did their server merge and the population's only recently noticeably started to shrink. That's a hell of a run, considering many newer MMOs that *do* target the "typical" MMORPG gamer fall well below that within their first several months.
SE did a number of things right with FFXI... one of them being not altering the game to "cater to more casual players", as many other developers did, as soon as WoW exploded on to the scene.
In an interview, they were asked if WoW's success would make them change FFXI in any way to cater more to that crowd... Their answer was "no, our intention is to remain focused on making FFXI the experience we intend it to be, and what our current players are enjoying"; that's a paraphrase, obviously.
There's a lesson there if ever I've seen one.

Well lookie there, the pre-order numbers have been steadily going up since the start of Open Beta. Guess people didnt hate the game as much as we have been told on these forums afterall.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
I appreciate being able to try the open beta, I didn't like the combat in this game.
Pretty much I played for about two weeks, and I don't think there was one time that I actually played for longer than an hour. It was just boring to me anyways, but I do appreciate the chance to find this out without wasting any money.

Heh, not surprised. A lot of Gamestops were being flooded with orders this weekend.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

Most people, don t come to forums and talk about games they like or don t like. People coming on here and saying "I CANCELLED MY PRE ORDER< THE GAME SUCKS!!" are the very very small minority. I am more hyped about the game since I tried OB, as is many people I know. One friend of mine just dropped his WOW sub to play FFXIV because he sees the potential of the game for years to come. FFXIV as was FFXI, is a game that isn t the norm, so people used to WOW type games are either completely turned off, or intrigued. I wouldn t be suprised if the numbers for NA is alot higher then what the FFXIV bashers are saying. As I said before, the people expressing their opinion of FFXIV, good or bad are the minority.
I'm surprised that cataclysm has more pre-orders even though a release date hasn't been set. This game is coming out in 2 freaking days.
To be honest, I thought it was going to do a bit better on that particular chart. Does anyone know of a correlation between pre-orders and first day box sales?
I don't know the correlation, but I have seen 70% of people drop a game after release. I'd wager similar things with FFXIV.
I dont' think FFXIV will hit its stride until the PS3 release. I actually plan on buying the game for PS3 as well. Huge bulk of SE's desired player base is japanese console players. You won't see big subscription numbers for the game until then.
Around 10k sub population will consist of 40 % asians, 10% ff fanyboys and 50% gold farmers within 2 months.
Mass exodus is inevitable. Say OMG no way!!!! as much as you like, but how many times has it happened allready? 6-7 games hyped and defended by fanboys only taking a short time for them to change their tune.
Save your money.
So there will be 1 gold farmer for each player O.o somehow doubt that the gold selling business would make a good profit that way....
The 40% Asians u mentioned r they Fanboys as well or is that reserved for only none Asians....
Your statement is funny because unintelligent and offending because its racist (unintelligent and racist often comes in one package) judging by your statement i would guess now u dont plan to play so 1 less of...well your kind in the game....hmmm,,,,,hmmm
All considered sounds like a huge win for us who plan to play
Wasnt being racist. It hillarious how some use race as a foundation for arguments! I meant that azn mmo players have vastly different tastes, ffxiv caters well to there likes well aside from being f2p, which will scare a few off aswell. However it will flop incredibly hard in the western market.
In short, game tries to cater to both markets, alot of play styles yet delivers well in none. This relates to a quick mass exodus in subs.
Take a look at the previous title. I think I know one western guy who plays it, who happens to be a extreme japanophile.
I will pass on this game for it's intended target is the PS3 and it shows. Based on passed releases in the western market this game IMHO will fail here. I really don't think SE cares to tell you the truth and is counting on it's PS3 market for it's player base.
All ready removed it from my comp after about 6 hours of play. Game just isn't for me.
FAir enough... i can respect peole that try something out and say it isn't their cup of tea. Unlike people who dislike a game and want to run to the top of the nearest mountain and yell at the top of their lungs, "Anyone who thinks this game is good is dumb!"
I tried the beta. I really wanted to like the game because the graphics are beautiful, the animation is fluid, and the style of the characters is cool.
However, I thought it was just a terrible game. It was almost physically painful to play. I have many reasons, but I am sure most don't care to read them.
Definite pass for me, but I am sure it will do well financially and be around for a while.

I use to go into long winded post about why I would not be purchasing a game. Now I know all I need to say is - the game is not for me. Somebody is going to say the opposite and actually like the game. Good on them. We need more MMO's on the market.
I will wait and see how the game is shaping up with all the promised features. Mainly UI, mouse, guildleve cooldown, quests and lag. Just to name a few.
If all is fine, then I will probably buy the standard version on September 30.
I do not understand when people say this game is hard to play.. I never once played FF XI and i have no trouble at all playing this game. The menus can be annoying but im sure it will be fixed eventually.. I just love the pace of the game.. instead of killing 100 easy monsters to level up..you kill 10 tough ones..
The combat is really fun once you get a class to level 8 and have some others around 4..then you have options as to how to play. When i first started i had a lot of the same complaints as other people..but i got sucked in because i started using different classes and it opened things up..
This game is not for everyone..but i think it will have a strong player base..I love how all these forum dwellers have turned into analysts all of a sudden. For those of you saying "its not going to do well on the pc"....it doesnt matter because the ps3 one will be on the same servers..
Also.. over half the people who played the beta said they are going to get the game... any game would love to have half the people who try it buy it.
