In the east maybe.  Still, FFXIV is an acquired taste and as much as niche gamers yearn for WoW type recognition it's not going to happen.  This game is made for certain players and certain players will play it.  Be fine with that.  You don't want the horde anyway.

I also played WoW btw, and I'd rather have the horde (minus male blood elves) than the alliance. Have multiple 80s on both though >.<

Anyways, I realize this game (FFXIV) is not for everyone, and hope it remains so. I'm fine with a 2m or 3m non-CN playerbase. WoW seems to be fine with it as well. Got to go now though, stuff to do. Have fun debating here.

Hahaha, WoW at the start was not called trash, it was called to be nothing else than EQ clone. But it was realy good EQ clone - you cant say that about FFXIV. FFXIV fails in elemental basics which majority mmo community expets from new mmo, annoying and pissing out your customers at start is not way to get milions subs . Maybe later console release may help a bit, but i have my doubts - mmos to me dont look like type of game suited to consoles.

Based upon FF XI (and that they aren't canning it), FF XIV won't even get to 15% of the China figure that WoW has.

Sorry, that statement is wrong. The last reported split demographic was this:

    1) 2.5 mil NA

    2) 2 mil EU

    3) 5.5 mil Asia region

That was in 2008. An analysis (on Gamasutra, I think it was) about 2009 guesstimated the China component to be 5-6 mil subs, and the former Chinese provider mentioned somewhere in 2009 5 mil subs - well, what they call subs.

I'm guessing that  the number of EU/US subs has decreased and the number of Chinese subs has increased in the meantime since reports and surveys mentioned that WoW's share of the total MMO market/playerbase in the US has gone down.

Not in the West. In the East, probably, but total subs? No.

Not a chance . Theres far too many negative rumours about this game in regards to only being able to get XP for a certain number of hours a week . I don't know how accurate they are but when the mmo report remarks on such a thing I tend to believe there is some truth in them . They certainly have been enough to disuade me from buying it at least untill I can assertain the truth behind it . This is proberbly the biggest reason why the game wont do as well as it might have .

It really has nothing to do with rumours or even the game,it is just simple math. When Wow came out, there was a huge influx of new players joining the genre, they wern't players leaving other games. For FFXIV to reach the same numbers there would have to be a minimum of 10 million new gamers plus several leaving otehr games,it  is not going to happen.Too many people mistaken Wow for having high nuymbers because the game was good,it was 90% brand new gamers who not only had zero mmo experience but did not have any understanding of what the genre offered, they just joined the most advertised game they saw.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I think what you're looking for is this:

    Understanding the Fatigue system

This was pretty much the best explanation I've seen regarding that system. I was really impressed with the person that made the video, it was very well done.

Very True. I never actually ment that this would be the reason that it would'nt have as many as WoW although re reading my post I can understand why you may have thought that . I ment simply that this xp system will have a negative effect on the numbers that may have tried the game . I never thought in a million years that it would have a potential player base anything like Warcraft with or without the xp fatigue system but it will have a considerable negative effect none the less .
