In all honesty I think it's better for people to not take anything they learned elsewhere and apply it to a new situation. Not only does it help you think objectively it makes the experience more unique.
When I was learning to swim I didn't think about how I moved on land and try to relate it to swimming. If more people just separate things and just keep it at this is this and that is that. We would all enjoy life more.
More importantly, how fast you learn and how well you do are determined by skills you've worked up i.e. reading comprehension, reaction time, etc.
Hold on a sec Masked... you say:
In all honesty I think it's better for people to not take anything they learned elsewhere and apply it to a new situation.
Then follow that up with this point:
More importantly, how fast you learn and how well you do are determined by skills you've worked up i.e. reading comprehension, reaction time, etc.
Need clarification otherwise I see contradiction. Every thing you encountered or have a consideration about today is a result from what you discovered, knew or learned before.
Your first statement can be applicable but not in the general sense you seem to use it in.
Since analogies seem to ire some readers. Consider a baby counting balls, she has 5 of them, 1 2 3 4 5. Add that the balls are different colors. You have three ways to ask her to hand you an individual ball. How does she know which one is the correct one to hand you? Whether you asked for that ball (point), the 3rd ball or the yellow one.
She learned and applied that knowledge to new scenario. She learned from what her parent taught her through hand holding.
This game is not hard to get used to. It is not more challenging. It is not more advanced in any way that any other MMORPG that I have ever played.
You do have to do a bit of searching to find your way. It does take a bit of time to get used to.
The problem is that once people are used to it, they don't like it. Or they just generally find the way it works to be obnoxious and slow. I didn't have this problem, but I COMPLETELY understand when people do.
I have more trouble running AoC then I do FFXIV. Funny that.
Yeah, that is strange. I can almost run AoC at full settings and get barely 15 FPS on FFXIV with every single thing turned down all the way including resolution.

AoC at full settings is not saying much at all. The only thing that kept most people from running AoC at full settings was Funcoms piss poor programming of the engine. There was nothing advanced / overly graphical about the game in any sense of the matter.
You got stuck in the beginning main quest? I didn't had any problem with that in all 3 starting cities. Did you read the quest log?
i was told to go to some river...
I'm a skim reader, i dont read specifics i just brush over everything.
I will give it another try after work tomorrow... hopefully character progression and gameplay are where its at!
Lol.
Well there you go. This post is a microcosm of why the genre is where it is. People expect every game to be the same damn thing and then when it isn't, they can't be bothered to take the time to play it as it was intended or figure things out. When it doesn't fit into a neat little progression-grind box, it's time to post about how it sucks and move on in search of the next failed attempt at making DIKU fun.

like whats already been stated, the thread point is now moot... I've already cleared up my concerns with the game, and am still playing it every now and then to see how it ends up.
My OP was merely just a representation of what a newcomer is to expect when first entering the game... And the type of frustration you can encounter. Getting past the initial frustration stages, I've levelled myself to 10, but the game still seems rather dull to me, and perhaps it infact isn't for me.
I never played the beta, so this is just the experience of a fresh player... never playing FFXI, but playing the single player console games a kid.
living in australia, I got my copy fairly early... after fiddling around with downloading a couple of patches (about 500-600mb worth after the disc installation) and setting up my billing account (had to use a fake address because the system requires a realistic address, and i live on a barracks...) i finally logged in.
hardware cursor has been implemented, although i have a gamepad, and both work pretty well for the interface at hand... which is quite archaic, and its obvious it was made for a console. Mouse lag is gone for good, but the other issues with the interface are still there- not being able to effectively bind keyboard keys.
i went through the character creation process, just clicking buttons, reading the little stories attached to each of the choices without actually knowing how they affect my character. Very limited options when choosing your appearance, and pretty much by the end of character creation you end up with a mixed bag and dont really know how anything affects you physically apart from a little lore about your chosen past. I'd like to think the character creation process is a huge defining factor when playing, because youre limited to pretty much 1 character (unless you decide to pay for more character slots)
i logged into the game with my first character, a puligist, which i believed was the only duel weilding damage dealing class. I didnt exactly know what my role was, or what any of the statistics mean. the manual which came with the retail copy of the game just babbles on about installing the game and setting up a subscription.
the first cutscene and getting introduced to the very first characters of my story was quite enjoyable. Although, once i took control of my character, i realised the game was rather choppy and it was very clear it was in a low resolution and no AA was enabled.... which was kind of strange, because when i logged out and switched it to a higher resolution, and fiddled around with some graphics, i was able to make it run -rather- smooth... i say rather because the game is still very laggy and not nearly as smooth as alot of other mmorpgs out today.
i killed some wolf type creatures, and got chased by a big angry treant... a moogle and company came and rescued me and my new friends, and took me into there village.
The game loaded, and i was plumped at the front gate of the village, where i met a steroid induced guard of some sort, who wouldnt let me enter the village... i figured id talk to him, and he offered to show me around. I ended up in a tavern, where some more of the story unfolded... my newly found companions i met in the woods during the cutscene, left the tavern... and i was left there all by myself, with a new quest to go to some lake and atone for my sins or something...
i tried to leave the tavern, but it wouldnt let me... so i decided to talk to the female behind the counter. she offered my some leve's... i accepted all the leve's i could... tried teleporting, but didnt know where i was supposed to go. I ran around the map for a good hour or so, trying to find something i was supposed to do, or see if i could find a place that was noted in my quest journal. It didnt go very well because the names on the map are in a different language, and i couldnt tell exactly where i was.
So i teleported back to the village, and ran around talking to every NPC i could... either they couldnt offer me anything, didnt want to talk to outsiders, or i wasnt able to join there "guild".
So, after i did this for another hour, watching my toon skip across the screen at 20 frames per second, listening to that sweet, but annoying final fantasy music... i decided to logout, write this post, and reload age of conan.
I'd like to eventually figure out what I'm supposed to do, but the lagging and loading times are making it unbearable... which is killing me, because the graphics are sub-par at best... and i play AoC on max settings lol.
So you haven't gotten passed the inn and the graphics are already sub-par?
like whats already been stated, the thread point is now moot... I've already cleared up my concerns with the game, and am still playing it every now and then to see how it ends up.

There are people who enjoy chopped liver and spam. Someone buys those pickled cow tongues and pig brains they sell at the grocery stores. People eat chitlin but I guarantee you can't order it at any 4 or 5 star restaurant in the US. If we start saying that a bad game isn't bad because it's all a matter of taste then you can throw out all subjective critiques, be it movie, music, book or game reviews. A bad game is a bad game in the same way that the movie Show Girls will never be held aloft like Citizen Kane. Before you even factor in things like storyline or art direction, you are left with bad programming and lucky for us, the former two can be,and should be critiqued. Your post serves to provide a critique that potential future players can read before they plop down their money, the more the merrier.
You got stuck in the beginning main quest? I didn't had any problem with that in all 3 starting cities. Did you read the quest log?

When I read that you were having problems and some clown responded to you by saying that the game doesn't hold your hand, well, I thought they were an idiot. I still think they're an idiot because, as you rightly pointed out, there is a difference between hand holding and giving new players (or any player for that matter) a real sense of direction. Unfortunately, all of your credibility is lost by saying that you are a skim reader, you don't read specifics and you brush over everything. Why the hell do you think that you deserve a response when you refuse to read the quest information that is fucking given to you?!?!?
I've played FFXI and I can understand someone saying, 'ummm...guys, wtf is up with this quest, what am I supposed to do?' That would make sense. It seems that FFXIV actually gives players nice, full information when it comes to quests and that is a good thing. Read the quest log, seriously, read every word and if you are still confused then post precisely what you are confused about. At that point players are likely to want to help you, but as it stands now you don't want to do any of the work yourself and there isn't one good reason anyone should help you.
(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain. (2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.
Originally was going to buy the CE but after hearing reports from Beta Testers decided to wait. It is kind of promising that at least the servers are running and playable on launch. I can think of quite a few other games that weren't. Probably going to give it 3-4 months and then buy the game if the reviews seem ok.
Your best bet would definitely be to have tested the beta, reviews are sometimes an okay guideline, but seldom a definitive. Maybe getting a buddy key could be a way too, I have seen many good, and many bad reviews of this game, impossible at least for me to draw a conclusion. Well actually I have concluded the game is for me more or less, but still I can never be sure.
In before everyone tells you to get a better computer and that FFXIV is a game that's hard.
FFXIV DOESN"T HOLD YOUR HAND BRO!
lol man this is the truth, so many people said this line for line to me. My computer can run anything very good and people were trying to tell me I need to upgrade. But I know my hardware and I have played the best of the best at vsynced cap fps. If you open the performance monitor in windows while playing and have a decent machine you will see that the game doesn't utilize close to all of your cpu and around 60-70% of your gpu. IT IS launch so that is to be expected for most games but a little more so with this one.
And the whole not holding your hand catch phrase of ff xiv is bs. There is a difference between not holding your hand and holding my hand but I just don't trust where they are taking me haha.
There is a bottleneck somewhere, and I am guessing it's your RAM. CPU can't get a full workload if RAM is too slow. OB ran fine for me with 12 Gb of 1600 DDR3. I am assuming launch will run even better from what I read. Stop quoting performance as a reason not to play this game, this is ridiculous. Get an OPTIMIZED comp since it runs fine for many people.
This game does not hold your hand BTW. Gotta read the quests and figure out a new approach. There's a reason games are for kids, they learn and adapt much easier.
You got stuck in the beginning main quest? I didn't had any problem with that in all 3 starting cities. Did you read the quest log?

Again, i was giving my first impressions upon entering ingame and playing a few hours. I wasn't trying to stir people up, im not an FFXIV fanboy, and im not an anti-FFXIV fanboy. It was just an honest and unbiased sum up of my first night with the game, which I'd NEVER have the chance to do with another game (us people from down under definately got spoilt this time round) because everyone would have already had the live product in there hands a couple of weeks before me.
I'm not going to moan and bitch about spending the money on a collectors edition, as I've definately spent alot more money on dead end games that ive barely opened out of the box.
i tried to leave the tavern, but it wouldnt let me... so i decided to talk to the female behind the counter. she offered my some leve's... i accepted all the leve's i could... tried teleporting, but didnt know where i was supposed to go. Still amazed people are saying the same things over and over, and then others are defending them as if they didnt do somethign wrong. Seriously, lets look at the facts shall we. Take this comment from the OP above, the very first sentance of it states 'I tried to leave the tavern, but it wouldn't let me...' as if this was a fault of the game design and not the player. What the OP is leaving out is what shows up in thier chat box right as they enter the tavern.
Instances are special areas that are entered upon fulfilling certain requirements, such as progressing in a quest. There will always be a message telling you when you have entered an instance, and your minimap will show its boundaries. Most instances can be left by crossing those boundaries; however, there are some, such as this one, in which certain objectives must be met before you are allowed to exit.
You have entered an instance.
So right off the bat we see the OP didnt pay attention and jumped to the conclusion it was the games fault, when in reality, had he read the HELP text in game he would have known he had to complete an objective before he could leave that instance.
The rest of his rant, and yes it is a rant, is because he couldnt' find his way to his quest destination, and again he blamed the game for it, instead of his inability to read the HELP text given to him in game. I actually covered this exact situation back on 09/08 in this thread, but I'll redo it here for this OP again.
Miounne: Gods, why I'm so nice I'll never know. Fine, I'll see to it you get a spot in the next purification. Meanwhile, you'd do well to visit Camp Bentbranch.
Miounne: Attune with the aetheryte there. It'll ease the burden of getting about while you're in Gridania. Here, I'll show you where it is on your map.
Miounne: And here, take this while you're at it. It's a linkpearl. Use this and you can get in touch with me no matter where you are.
Miounne: If you ever find yourself lost in Gridania, first take a look at the map to get your bearings. If that don't help, just use the linkpearl and I'll see what I can do. Think you can remember all that?
You obtain a linkpearl from the Adventurers' Guild.
A glow emanates from the Adventurers' Guild linkpearl.
"The Color of Sin" has been updated in your journal.
And then when you activate your linkpearl (because its glowing).
Miounne: I see you're not shy about using the linkpearl I gave you. Make your way to Camp Bentbranch, just like I told you.
Miounne: Leave the city and head south, and stay wary of the beasts. It's not the safest of jaunts.
So as you can see, if he had read the HELP in game, he would have known it was a very simple quest. Just leave the spot you currently are and head south to Camp Bentbranch. And as a matter fo fact, Camp Bentbranch is directly south of the tavern. Seriously, if you walk south and dont stop walking south, you will run right into it.
So what does this say about our OP, well it is filled with incomplete and inaccurate data in which he is using to try and forward the pictue to everyone here that the game is somehow lacking in its new user friendliness. When in reality the help is there, you just have to look at the text box and actually read it. And for all those defending him on his claims here, you do realize he is using you to assist in spreading his misinformation, and it makes you look as wrong as he is.
Next time everyone jumps up and down to defend someones review, please take the time to make sure it isn't wrong first, it would make these forums a much nicer place.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
It's a new game and a new system of doing things (i.e. no exclamation marks and question marks over people's heads). So far, you only have to read really for the tutorial quest, which if you read it, explains how to do most everything in the form of a quest, which has the side benefit of sending you around town to get aquanted with where everything is. Lucky for you, once you start doing levequests, you won't have to read anymore and you can get to pewpewing.
You'll have missed a big part of the charm of final fantasy titles, though, which is the story and the rping npcs (you probably flew by about 30 of them which you'll never see again as you rushed your way through the beginning).
If you're stressed from work and you just want to chill and pewpew, this is probably not the game for you. There's a bunch of new stuff to learn, there's no auction house so shopping can be time consuming, crafting takes significantly more time than in other games and the crafting jobs are jobs in their own right, recipes are not included in game and have to be found on the internet, there's a limit of 8 leve quests a day so you can't pew pew past a few hours unless you just want to grind (which may be ok or even fun once groups start becoming useful), nobody really knows what the sun and moon stuff does etc etc.
Basically, you need some level of patience for this game. Patience is rewarded with a more complete and fulfilling RPG experience (there is a reason there's "RPG" in the name "MMORPG"). Whether you just don't have it (like most haters) or there is some legit reason like you're working hard during the day and are burned out, this just might not be the game for you.
In case you feel like giving it more of a solid chance, try turning of depth of field and AO and setting the multisampling to 4 or 8. It will still look basically just as good but it will cut load on your system by like 30%. Don't expect to play this on Max just because you can play AOC on Max. AOC has good graphics but FFXI has more intricate graphics (with things like packs that move seperately from your body, stop and start animations, the most complex lighting system to date in an MMORPG). All those things can tax your system more than you might think.
Most important thing I've found is getting the animations to play right and get fps as high and steady as possible. Things may look great with settings really high for screenshots, but it does you no good if it's all choppy when you're running around, and you're missing out on some truly hilarious animations like the rat's nutkick attack (it quickly digs up a nut, turns around and kicks it at you with its hind legs).

Lol, its over... I dont see what you're trying to defend. did you even read the reast of the thread? or are you just concerned with being right now?
How someone interprets someone elses opinions and impressions is completely on them...
You're holding me and my post up in the light as if I were disproving the bible or evolution... seriously. CHILL.
I'm not a part of the gaming media... They're just my opinions... if someone is going to base there judgement off of mine, thats there issue. Anyone who disagrees with what I'm saying can happily enjoy the game, and all the best to them... It happens all the time... Why spending all of your time trying to defend a game, when you can just PLAY it.
As you can see im not pulling out all this gospel of Square enix promising an awesome product, that was going to change the world and cater to everyones needs... And claiming they were bullshit, there was false advertising, and i feel cheated having bought and played the game.
I don't hate the game, and I'm not going to sit here and bash it all day.... The only thing I seem to be defending here is myself. Why is everyone so hostile?
I went into the game not knowing what to expect, and upon first impressions, This was my conclusion. THE END. That is all it was... Admittedly, i wasnt exactly sober when writing it, so it could have come across a little more passionately and upfront than what I'd normally say.

I went into the game not knowing what to expect, and upon first impressions, This was my conclusion. THE END. That is all it was... Admittedly, i wasnt exactly sober when writing it, so it could have come across a little more passionately and upfront than what I'd normally say.
The reason some of us fans may be hostile is we've read countless "reviews" of the game where the person says the game is crap based on them just not taking the time to figure out how to play the game.
You're right that you yourself didn't say the game was crap, but it was pretty negative in tone, and it was pretty much in fact due to you just not taking the time to figure out how to play the game. Hopefully you can see where Kaocan is coming from and not take it personally.
Read my post right above yours if you want some advice on the graphics which should help if you're up for giving the game another shot.
i tried to leave the tavern, but it wouldnt let me... so i decided to talk to the female behind the counter. she offered my some leve's... i accepted all the leve's i could... tried teleporting, but didnt know where i was supposed to go. I ran around the map for a good hour or so, trying to find something i was supposed to do, or see if i could find a place that was noted in my quest journal. It didnt go very well because the names on the map are in a different language, and i couldnt tell exactly where i was.
Lol, its over... I dont see what you're trying to defend. did you even read the reast of the thread? or are you just concerned with being right now?

As you yourself stated in this very thread (yes I did read it all by the way), that your intention on posting this thread was to be "a representation of what a newcomer is to expect when first entering the game...". What I was doing is just pointing out that what you feel is important to point out to newcomers, and what they shoudl expect, is not exactly an accurate assessment of FFXIV, it is merely frustration as you seen it, from your viewpoint. And not the same frustration that all newcomers will see if they actually spend the time and take the effort to read what is given to them in the game.
This thread, and your opening post is just your first impression true, but your intention was to provide a review that others could use to gauge whether or not they wished to try this game. And by providing false informtion, you are in fact not being true to your own intentions. Your information was not accurate, and should not be used by newcomers to guage what they should expect when they first log into FFXIV, only what you experienced because of your own playstyle.
I was in fact, only correcting your mistake, to give a more accurate assessment of what they will experience, as it really is. You can fault me for that sure, but it is a factual correction to your review either way.

Smacking F5 on the tracking page... in transit... ugh. hehe
I have more trouble running AoC then I do FFXIV. Funny that.
Yeah, that is strange. I can almost run AoC at full settings and get barely 15 FPS on FFXIV with every single thing turned down all the way including resolution.
This game is a huge dissapointment.
Welcome to final fantasy. Glad you went back to AOC if 10 minutes to an hour of gameplay is all you will give a game.
AoC at full settings is not saying much at all. The only thing that kept most people from running AoC at full settings was Funcoms piss poor programming of the engine. There was nothing advanced / overly graphical about the game in any sense of the matter.
Just lol.
Well, that's like, your opinion, man.
Then your computer is not for this game.I wonder in what settings u play age of conan?lol
You have to read everything in order not to get lost.
First time i passed dialogs without reading i was also lost. After i read i found my way.
like whats already been stated, the thread point is now moot...
So you haven't gotten passed the inn and the graphics are already sub-par?
