Cartoon network has done well with the series. No doubt. Yet, like I said, my son is a diehard clone wars freak and even plays the new browser based clone wars mmo. Yet he has no interest at all in playing a talky game as he sees it. lol New generation yes but not really one that will play Biowares Star Wars MMO. I think Avatar has more clout with younger folks then SW does. At least to all the younger folk I know, which is alot. We are the house that all the neighborhood kids come to and hang out. Avatar MMO would be huge.
As I said...can you name ONE other brand that has the MASS APPEAL (generational) that Star Wars does? Avatar is most certainly not even on the charts with Star Wars. How did the Avatar toys sell? The Star Wars BRAND sells itself. My father, my mother, my grandparents and my children ALL know Star Wars and could name 3+ characters...not one of us could name a character from Avatar.
And truthfully, I'm glad your child isn't interested in the Bioware MMO yet - means it's not geared towards kids. If he's content with CWA, good for you. Both my kids are interested in SW:TOR - that means 3+ subs to the game minimum for me. Having had 9 unique kids in and out and overnight at my house this weekend as well as coaching 30+ every night, I too have a fairly good idea of what the younger folk (11-15) like...and more of them know names like Darth Vader, Luke/Anakin Skywalker, Han Solo and Jar-Jar than any from Avatar.

Overall Tux is making an excellent point, if you just took Avatar against Star Wars in the younger generations demographic sure it would be pretty close (and in my experience most of the kids I know 13 and under are not nearly as familiar with Star Wars as we were growing up) but I still think it would be close there no matter who wins or loses. Where the problem comes in with saying something like Avatar could rival Star Wars is where Tux put it the older you get the less and less familiar people are with Avatar while knowing Star Wars.
The clone wars and anything coming from it is geared to children in much larger part than alot of other Star Wars products, which again shows how huge Star Wars is that it has morphed itself into different forms for the different generations that it can and does serve.
I think I had to chime in on this because I've seen a couple of people make statements about the waning popularity of Star Wars and it trips me out because there is simply not many franchises as big as this is the only real competition for Star Wars (in a mass market sense not just with children) is comics and that is quite a statement to what Star Wars is since we grew up with alot more content from these comics from much farther in history while Star Wars was spawned from a single movie.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
You don't have to look any further than Mythic knowing that Bioware isn't any longer in charge of its own. They now have EA and Lucasarts to please, which both are endless money hungry. Just look at Mass Effect 2 and the upcoming Dragon Age 2 both will have less roleplay elements and more "action" -> downgraded so the console gamer can enjoy them, which will result in a very poor movie like game experience such as all BW games since ME.
People need to realize at some point, that WoW is the exception not the norm. This is especially targeted at all the stupid publishers outthere thinking, they can make another WoW thanks god there will never ever be another game like that. again. No, not even the new Blizzard MMO will come close to it, because Blizzard has lost almost all of their topguys and more will follow since they've merged with the devil known as Activision.
Star Wars has lost lots of fans with the crap named episode 1 - 3. Also an IP like this will always come with expectations you simple can't reach, no matter how much money you're throwing at your game. Imho there is still no source about all the "omg this game will cost 100 millions of $ +"..
Judging on the little known facts, this game is looking like a Mass Effect 2 (subpar graphics aside) with a cooperative modus. They haven't shown much ingame footage yet, but its obvious the animations do need a lot of work. Bioware is in the danger thinking, story alone will be enough, to keep people satisfied, which simple isn't true.
What really scared me has been a comment from James Owen himself some guys asked him about the endgame and his answer was like "well you can play another of our 8 unique stories".
Till they are showing their MMORPG features you know - showing not just talking about it - I doubt it will reach all the unrealistic hype dreams (anyway no one ever will).
So some of the overhyped fanboys wouldn't be in for a huge letdown if they just did the same.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
No, the negativity on this site isn't anything for SW:TOR, but it is a good sign for SWG as all the QQ SOE fanbois who wanted a remake of SWG:PRE-CU will go back and start playing the slaughtered SWG:NGE. It has no effect on SW:TOR, and Smedley is just rubbing his hands going "yes my moneybags yes come to me". People wanted Bioware to be unoriginal and completely rip off SWG, but that wasn't going to happen.
But my point is valid and stands. Star Wars does not have the clout that it once did. Nor does it capture the imaginations of people as it did in our day. I hope I am wrong I really do. I just dont think so. There are so many games out there to play and even another SW MMO. I know there are alot of SW fans out there but regardless of my social circle I think that applies both ways. Not as many outside of YOURS like or give a damn about SW anymore. Too many bad games and bad movies and 30 year old memories. My son and his friend were more excited to play an Avatar MMO over any SW game and ALOT of people agree. I know alot of people are excited right now but most are just longtime SW fans who have waited since the NGE for a new MMO for their beloved franchise to come out. We will see after the game has been out for a year if it can keep the players. Most MMO's dont. Most.
Agian not trying to troll I just dont see this being a big hit for too long. Star Wars Galaxies was bleeding subs BEFORE the NGE and people talk so highly about that game. Cant see an online co-op RPG from Bioware being able to hold a subscriber base longer than a year.
I not so sure I agree with you on SW's current clout... Cartoon Network is spending millions to run the Clone Wars series, now in it's 3rd season. Not only is it drawing in an entirely new generation of fans, it's also generated an entirely new set of merchandise to sell. Arguably the market Star Wars in now competing in is more saturated than ever, but I don't know if any name even gets close to rivaling it for the mass appeal...can you name one?!
SWG was bleeding subs for a slew of reasons...none of which (or few at best) were the subject (Star Wars) the game centered on.
I do share your concern on the longevity of SW:TOR though. As much as I want to plan on it being my only MMO for the next 10 years, I don't know that Bioware will deliver what "I" want to play that long. But no matter how long I play it for, I WILL play it and I am sold on it because it's Star Wars.

While I'm sure MMORPG developers are happy to take in customers from all age ranges, what makes you so sure that your son, who is of the age where he watches Clone Wars (without already being a SW fan) and who describes SW:TOR as a "talky game," is of their target audience?
Unless we're talking about Wizard 101, Free Realms, and Lego Universe, MMORPGs aren't exactly made for kids, and I'm not sure I would be interested in them at that age either.

Also, alot of SW fans will play it. WoW fans may play it. Plenty of people that will probably play TOR. This nonsense that it is being made for younger players, it's just a statement that is being thrown around to try and discredit this game for what it is really trying to do.

But this is GAMING. Proven mass appeal does not a popular game make. Games do not need a strong mass appeal outside IP to rely on. Conan? Star Trek? SW? LOTR? Not huge hits.
Warhammer 40k =D
Theres Orks, magic, guns, giant robots, gore, evil beings, and tragic story xD

Why isnt it being made for younger fans as well? The IP is marketed to all ages right? Mass appeal right? yet it alienates part of its fan base? Thats my point. SW went younger way before clone wars. Jar Jar Appeal to all fans and it wil be a huge hit. Until then just average.
Well, with all games they try to appeal to as many people as they possibly can. This is not going to be a kiddies game though. I expect people of all ages will find something they like about it. Most of the people I see at these conventions dressed in star wars attire or wielding a light saber are adults 20-40 .
After five years as a member of this site, the negativity really has no effect on me anymore. I look at it a lot like crying wolf, if everything is viewed as bad, it's hard to say what's actually bad and what's just more of the same MMORPG.com nonsense.

Yeah I kinda dont care anymore, I hardly post due to the way this forum is. And I am only here because of the beta keys from now on. Sick of the constant bashing bla bla with new games and of wow.
Depends what you mean by "good sign" for starters. My impression of your comment was whether a game managed to succeed financially for, say, at least a year, but a few nuts with larger ego's will interpret "good sign" as something they personally like.
If we look at it in terms of financial success, some of the games that get the most venom around here - cough WoW cough - are easily the most successful. And then some games that have the loving adoration from a small fanbase filled with high praise or nostalgia - cough Vanguard cough - are fighting just to keep their heads above water.
Of course there are just as many reverse examples as well. Hence I'm forced to draw the conclusion it's not a good or bad sign; it's an irrelevant sign. Apparently high praise from the mmorpg.com forums means absolutely nothing for the success of a game. It's not a good or bad sign - doesn't seem to matter what anyone around here thinks (imagine that).

ofcourse it doesn't matter what regular unhappy people on this website think. if you try to look at the amount of MMO players we have aroud the world, only a very teeny tiny minority posts on this website. I have played a lot of MMO over the years and all the players i know or had a chance to meet don't care about forums.
Best part about this site is the beta keys and the article updates. Everything else is just for amusement purposes.

Agreed I am the only person I know who plays mmo's that even goes to sites like this, whether we like to admit it or not we are not the norm (which I like not being average) and outside of player reviews that actually lay out gameplay elements take everything on this site or ones like it with a grain of salt.
This site hates WOW which is by far the biggest mmo in the world, ever but it will get no love here. I don't play WOW anymore but I'd be a liar if I said I didn't play it and didn't become highly engaged in it or that I couldn't see how it could be a fun time sink.
But here? WOW is a curse word and an insult, how many posts have you read where a person showed displeasure at something only to have someone come back at them with "go back to WOw and grind dailies then"?
If I'm hearing on mmorpg that a game is crap and has features that don't work I'm going to do further research but when they are decrying games that are more than a year from release you just have to remember where you are, in a room full of people who for better or worse have felt ignored for far longer than they'd like and have the need to not only tell us what they think but also have us agree with them.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Again, I don't agree with this. You need look no further than SWG for the power of the Star Wars lore...dude...SWG **edit**ing blows and it's still going...seriously...pink **edit**ing flying Ewoks with purple hearts...or even Clone Wars Adventures from SoE. CWA is a pay/cash shop version of any number of free games on addictinggames.com, yet they have 1-million registered users opening week. ONE MILLION!
Even STO was a success in terms of return on investment. They got the people they wanted only because of the IP...most certainly not because of the game they created. Star Trek and Star Wars, I believe, have the fan base to support everything from video games to literature BECAUSE of the IP mass appeal.
I'm not trying to argue with you...but I think you're overlooking just how powerful STAR WARS the brand is. Nothing compares. NOTHING. Slap Star Wars on a box and I swear you could sell dog **edit** in it.
The only issue I have is wondering how well they pull off the MMO portion of the game. I mean I have a fear it will end up like Mass Effect in Star Wars universe. With everything so story based I wonder how we can be more than just a copy of all the others playing the same side same class. Im not trolling I am interested in seeing how Bioware pulls it off. On a side note. I asked my 10 year old boy after watching a few videos of SWTOR if he was interested in playing it....he looked at them and asked a couple of questions and said "nah I will stick with Wizards 101 and Free Realms."
I really thought he would have wanted to play it. Maybe he will when it comes out but after talking to him and his friend about it. Im not too convinced the younger folks give a damn about Star Wars. lol He said the first 3 movies look too old and the last 3 were OK as he put it.
I wonder how much of a cash cow Star Wars really is. I know a guy who sells Star Wars mem. out of his house through a website. He has no plan to play and he is the biggest SW fan I have ever meet. I like Bioware for their work in the past but I am worried for them on this.
This is a good opinion, but I guess Im am less worried and more optimistic based on the progress I see and the company we are talking about. Yes, I agree, cash cows can be horrible, but since we don't know their payment methods yet, I say why worry?
I am very much looking forward to this game and continue to be cautiously optimistic. Each build they release shows improvement in the areas I was concerned about and they still have a lot of time. My first MMO was WOW followed by EQ2, Vanguard, Warhammer, LOTRO, Age of Conan, Aion, and Allods. I also just started beta testing Gods and Heroes (pretty world in my first 5 minutes :-). I never played SWG and quite frankly since I never heard of it until the trolling on these forums, I'm assuming it wasn't that successful in comparision to WOW and other smaller sub games such as LOTRO or EQ2 (I could be wrong).
Anyway, it seems to me that in my relatively short online gaming experience compared to some of you (I started in 2004 or so), that several games with very high hype and hope similar to what Guild Wars 2 has now barely lived up to their potential or expectations once the real reviews rolled in and the 3-4 month time frame had passed. I would say this about Vanguard, Aion, AOC (which has improved), and Warhammer (which I loved the first 2-3 months).
The Old Republic at least on these forums has more trolling then I can remember then the games I listed above so far before release (again, I could be wrong....Im just basing it on my general memory and feeling when I would pop in and out of the forums). It appears that Bioware has released very little information in comparision to their 150M budget. Keeping the hype lower and all of this trolling may actually help the game when they finally release a build that everyone can really dive into a really feel the world around them. I say keep trolling (including the site writers) because I think in the long run people here may be pleasantly surprised since the expectations and hype continue to be reset by the trolling itself. I actually think GW2 may suffer a similar fate because of the hype, though I'm hoping I'm wrong because I want to play that game in between this game when I just want to play something else that doesn't require a huge investment of time.
SWG never met commercial expectations, there were a lot of reasons, complete sandbox with no real plot, a lot of features missing from launch, a horrible client plagued by bugs, a hideous ui. That being said it was as close as you could get to playing in the SW universe with no boundaries.
No game ~EVER~ fares well here after launch. No matter how successful or anything else it's going to be ripped to shreds after launch... that being said you sure named some real stinkers.
If you think there's a lot of trolling here you should have hit the ffxiv boards before launch ;P
Thank you for actually responding to my post lol. I guess your right about how games generally get ripped apart right after release. Lord of the Rings Online was actually quite polished IMO at Launch. A great game, but god I wish they had Aion like animations lol. Anyway, your last sentence made me laugh :-)
SWG vets are a big source of the negativity for this game... which, for me, says good things about the game. If SWG Vets had good things to say, that would point to the likelyhood of this game really sucking.
Not sure why SWG vets would hate this game. It isnt out yet. Also they are not the same kind of games at all. Both MMO's maybe but not the same kind of games. One was sandbox the other is story driven.
That was one of my points. I don't care if the game is Sandbox or Themepark as long as it is a good game. I like both types of games.
Depends what you mean by "good sign" for starters. My impression of your comment was whether a game managed to succeed financially for, say, at least a year, but a few nuts with larger ego's will interpret "good sign" as something they personally like.

Thank you for responding directly to my post which I appreciate. Your response made me think a little and you may be completely right. Maybe it doesn't matter. Regardless, I'll be curious to see how financially and sub numbers post the 4 month mark are for both GW2 and TOR based on the tone in the forums with GW2 being protected with a magically bubble and TOR being ripped apart by so many here based on so very little information released based on the 150M budget they have. That is why I wish I had a magical program to track those who post here and see how long they stay in TOR versus GW2 lol. Anyway, I really hope both games succeed.

Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
The problem with this is, TOR is not being made for younger people. It isn't even being made for Clone wars fans. It is being made for bioware KOTOR fans. Most of these people are not younger players.
Also, alot of SW fans will play it. WoW fans may play it. Plenty of people that will probably play TOR. This nonsense that it is being made for younger players, it's just a statement that is being thrown around to try and discredit this game for what it is really trying to do.

The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night.
ofcourse it doesn't matter what regular unhappy people on this website think. if you try to look at the amount of MMO players we have aroud the world, only a very teeny tiny minority posts on this website.

This is a good opinion, but I guess Im am less worried and more optimistic based on the progress I see and the company we are talking about. Yes, I agree, cash cows can be horrible, but since we don't know their payment methods yet, I say why worry?

Thank you for actually responding to my post lol. I guess your right about how games generally get ripped apart right after release. Lord of the Rings Online was actually quite polished IMO at Launch. A great game, but god I wish they had Aion like animations lol. Anyway, your last sentence made me laugh :-)
There Is Always Hope!
That was one of my points. I don't care if the game is Sandbox or Themepark as long as it is a good game. I like both types of games.
