General: Speculating on World of Darkness

MMORPG.com Managing Editor Jon Wood has a few thoughts about recent revelations about World of Darkness. CCP finally shed some new light on the game that they, well, weren't developing during last week's Grand Masquerade. Blogger Jachilli wrote about a panel discussion where players were allowed to make suggestions to the team about what they would and would not like to see in World of Darkness. Jon's article spends time discussing the most interesting. Check it out!

So CCP, the company behind EVE Online has finally publicly announced their World of Darkness MMO. You know, that game that we all knew they were making ever since the MMO developer merged with White Wolf, the folks behind the WoD IP?

I used to play the pen and paper game, and I'm looking forward to seeing this, even more so after the tech demo they treated us to.

It will be nice to see such a popular LARP/PnP IP come to fruition in MMO form. The game will virtually write itself, especially with open-ended goals. As long as they stay away from the allure of trying to take away from Blizzard's market share and instead focus on delivering a dirty, gritty, brutal, but FUN game, they'll have a core of gamers that will NEVER leave them. To say I can't wait is an understatement.

My only problem with the game so far is that it continues to be labled the "World of Darkness" MMO when in actuality it is a Vampire: the Masquerade MMO.  Certainly it is set in the WoD, but it is lacking many of the other "factions" that make up the world.  Personally I was hoping for werewolves as playable characters far more than vampires.  Either way I am still excited despite my mild disappointment.

This game will be interesting cause its trying (to me) make a new type of mmo, the social mmo. While there will be some content, youll see these people sit in the background as the true political figures rise and rule the land of this game. These people will be valued and give a true meaning for leadership, or hated for there rule in the regions. Then i wonder will be start making ganking clans to take out this leaders if paid the right amount. You can really abuse and create a new style of mmo gaming if you can do this right. I feel like i should write a blog about the potiential of a mmo like this one.  :D

I just hope that CCP lets white wolf do the lore, and decide progression based upon Masquerade and avoids changing anything to suit the game play to drastically. The embraced TV series comes to mind with vampires being able to withstand sunlight after recently feeding upon someone, its not WoD and it shouldn't of happened.

The other thing is a hope that CCP stays true to the MMO its good at making, not selling out for what they believe would give them higher sub count. You can copy the popular MMOs but unless you change the script significantly it can never be more than a copy of an original. I do not worry to much about this though, seeing as Eve has managed to remain true to its original ideas over all these years.

I for one would welcome perma death or at least a perma death server.

Dependant upon the games overall mechanics ofc.

as a server type, or not all servers may have it or maybe multiple servers. Itll probally not make it, but i would love to see it for assassinations.

I just thought about this, would people rather have a single server for all like EVE or multiple servers. I think a single large server with a few major cities and small farm towns could be cool. Zomg faming vampires! and mob like vampires

I don't think they have stated that they are actually considering the idea.  It was just a suggestion from a consumer.

If it is a server type then that works. I bet alot of people would not want to have a permadeath system on all servers.

I hate to say this but it is a Vampire game, perma-death is already a part of it, lol, heheehe.

Is this a World of Darkness game or a Vampire: the Masquerade game? I played some WoD PnP RPGs in the 90's, but I hate the Vampire game. I played Werewolf, and then when it came out, switched to Mage. I don't see anything in these links but Vampire stuff.

I would like permadeath to be optional with some benefits such as if you choose it, your character is quite a bit stronger than normal characters and maybe a requirement to be in a position of power such as any ruling body in the game.

It gives people incentive to choose the risky route of permadeath, but they have more power to affect the game. I know I would probably choose it if my decisions above others had the ability to set rules, precedents, etc. I think it would be fun being king, or one of the elite rulers for months (hopefully), going down in a blaze of glory, rather than a pawn the whole time.

UGGGH TWILIGHT BURN IN A FIRE!!!!!!!! :P sorry lol.

Anyways, interesting read, and I know its something that I have been pondering for what seems like years.

    Permadeath

I think this is very viable, but there would have to be mechanics in place to make it so that players feel challenged rather than punished.  Some sort of system to allow transfer of some cash and valuables from the dead toon to the account.  Games today are more designed around being a timesink, especially where our mmos are concerned.  The idea is, as we all should know by now, to keep players addicted and coming back for more with as little resistance against the player as possible.  If permadeath could be implemented in such a way that players do not lose months worth of effort it would not only work, but I think it would be extraordinarily successful, especially because so many players out there consider themselves "Hardcore" or "core" gamers lol.

    WOW Clone

Everything is called a wowclone anymore and am personally kind of sick and tired of the term.  WoW did not create the genre and apart from the pug finder thingie I do not believe there is one single mechanic or system in WOW that wasn't lifted directly from some other game.  Asheron's Call, EQ, DAOC, UO, Anarchy Online, Lineage 1 and 2, and more have all influenced Blizzard.  These systems that have been regurgitated, have in many respects, 20 or 30 years of gaming behind them.  Is every car on the road a Daimler or Oldsmobile clone?  They all have round wheels on axles, they all have engines transmissions doors brakes carbeurators or fuel injection.  They all have stereos, seatbelts, etc etc etc.  So by "the community's" standards something like a McClaren is nothing more than a clone of a prius.

With every new game announced people cry its a wow clone.  I do not believe that 99% of the people out there understand what the hell they are talking about and are endeavoring, unsuccessfully, to sound smart, experienced, and insightful.  This is not just directed towards the community but for a whole lot of people that run these fun little time wasting sites as well.  From here, massively, etc, are a ton of 20 somethings who's first experience with gaming was on a playstation 2 or newer, and have no idea about hte history of gaming and apart from Super Mario haven't experienced the true classics.

    Zone Control etc

This is something that I hear often when new games are announced.  While I personally like the idea, it must be done in such a way that doesn't make a player feel as if they had no option.  The control has to be something that people want to protect, but it also has to be something meaningless enough that losing control does not have a detrimental effect on people's play.  The majority of a game's community typically does not make it to end game, there are a ton of casuals out there that will spend a week gaining a level and if these casuals are unable to enjoy the game then it will die, or wallow in a middling realm.  Which isn't neccessarily a bad thing.  CCP has been a little game for years now, they have a few hundred thousand players and are making a good profit.

I am hoping for a good game and interested to see what CCP has up their sleeves.  While i have a ton of suggestions I am just a gamer, someone who has been playing for 30+ years and am just hoping for entertainment...  It would be nice to have a fun, entertaining, adn challenging game to play :)

I actually was thinking of a new twist on the permadeath feature, where if the server crashes all characters die with it and can not be resurrected.  That would be so hardcore!!!!

So what is this mmo about anyway?

Because CCP still hasnt really released any info people are just wildly speculating (me included).

But yes CCP is focusing on vampires only atm. But I can promise this much, okay I can speculate on this much. CCP wouldnt have spent money to buy White Wolf only to make a Vampire game. That would be stupid, and CCP are not stupid.

Vampires, who secertly live among us, using us, feeding on us, controling us. The standard fair.

To reference a movie that you may have seen. Think Blade way more than Twilight. As a matter of fact, dont even think Twilight.

Try is link, and watch the video. Even though its recorded with a hand held its not that bad of quality. CCP released it for the fans of WoD to set the mood of what they are trying to bring to a MMO.

Personally I would be very dissapointed if this game didn't have meaningful zone control. given that was pretty much was the pnp game was about, or at least in most of the pnp dark ages games I've been in. If zone control wouldn't be guild based, then at least faction based, which lets hope they include a majority of the factions.

Other then that it definetly needs to be some sort of sandbox worked a new way, with some living breathing npc world as well, player run is fine but there is just something npcs also bring to the game that are really needed in things like this.

Heres to hoping they include all the sects of vampires that were in the book.

As for the Eve comment, it should definetly be more like EVE minus the control scheme of a Z axis, the world is about vampires running things, corporations, the government and using that power to gain more influence.  You can't have a game whose roots have solely been about gaining power through money/diplomacy, and change it into a solely combat oriented game, it really should take alot of cues from EVE.
