"First thing in the morning tomorrow, I intend to instruct those who manage my precious SquareEnix stock (however little it may be) to arrange to sell all of it. To Square, thank you for the enjoyment of your products up until now, with the exception of this last one. Goodbye."
Square-Enix experienced a definite dip in stock value on the 7th, dropping from 1800 yen a share to 1735 a share before recovering later in the day
It didn't hurt the developer much or at all, as the stock price recovered later that same day - seems there were more than enough fellow stock brokers willing to pick up what he was selling at a bargain. Interesting that less than 1% of Square-Enix is worth $26 million dollars.

That is one rich Otaku.
I think you're missing the point - whether it did any financial damage to the developers is pretty much irrelevant. It's more of an attack at SE's integrity and reputation than anything, and like other's have said, this guy truly did it with his wallet.
I don't know. If I'm sitting here from the perspective of being a monolithic game company and the fax comes in that somebody dumped 1% of my stock because they didn't like my game, I'm going to be like:
"Huh, that guy who owns my stock has decided he doesn't like my games anymore. Should I care if one guy who happens to own some of my publically traded stock really, really didn't like my latest game?"
He had a lot more than own shares, and that's a lot of money, sure, but aside from that it's still like the cat lady on Futurama.
This story did bring a smile to my lips, but in the same way that the occassional multi-billion ISK scam or loss happens in EVE Online. Tragically amusing.

Actually it was probably more like:
"WTF?! Our stock just dipped!! DOOOOM!!! What if other investors get spooked and this becomes a trend?! Are we going to have to start laying people off?!"
20 minutes later....
"Well that was kinda scary, but at least its back up to where it was... So... who's up for some lunch?"
"Well sir, judging by all the negativity the game has launched to and then this sudden sale of stock, don't you think for cautions sake we should at least reassure our players that we are listening and planning to make the game better?"
"Sushi it is!"

Really? You're talking about the Cat lady whose stock options decided the fate of Planet Express in that particular episode? What a wonderful analogy.
The next Final Fantasy game has to be a FF7 remake for them to climb out of this hole.
Oh, no. They can't do that. Didn't you read the interview where the producers of FFXIII Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama said it would be too impossible to make a fully 3d HD version of FFVII because of the towns ( of all reasons lol ), and even said that was one reason they eliminated towns from FFXIII and went with the "one stop shop" terminals?
The funniest part was when he said this was that Hironobu Sakaguchi, the original creator of FInal Fantasy who left to make his own company and was the reason Square had to merge with Enix since he was a main source of capital, had already released Lost Odyssey to critical acclaim with.....wait for it......a fully 3d HD jrpg with towns.
Yes, these are the fools in charge of FF games. Explains a lot, don't it?

Which is easy to say when you believe it is 'a monolithic game company' checking the fax (are the 80's back?) and not human beings that are paid to be accountable for things like this.

I still have yet to play Lost Odyssey... I think im going to pick that up. Thanks bro.
LO can be a bit slow at times, but in my opinion its one of the best JRPGs since FFVII.
I am sure you can get a used copy for less than $30, though it is worth paying full retail if ya cant find one.

True, I already own it so I was just guessing cause I was too lazy to actually look up the prices :P

Indeed. This may be one of those scenarios where the repercussions are felt further down the road.
An investor who really doesn't know the reception of the game outside of initial sales may use this article to investigate the fan reception and conclude that the long term prospects for the use of their flagship IP doesn't look good.
It's worth noting that this is all speculation. There has been no confirmation from any reliable source on this since it happened and is all just rumor at this point.

Thats what I been telling you all, its a conspiracy to "get the development team". First, they pay off all the gaming review sites then they pay players to say its bad then the market crashes...why can you all see it?
Cool deal... I'll scoop by gamestop on my way home from work tomorrow thanks guys.
Oh its 19.99 used at Gamestop, its a good deal.
NO don't, if you wait a couple of weeks it will be on the $10 rack.
As if GameStop deals in used PC gamers.
Amazon cut the price a bit, but GameStop is still selling it at full price.
Lost Oddessy is an Xbox 360 game, not a PC game...

Oh yeah, that game sounds interesting. Got about 76/100 on metacritic, the worst score being a 2.5/5.0 on GameSpy (only half a star higher than FFXIV). I'd probably rent it over GameFly.

LOL! I guess it is that bad...
