Which Mmo gave you the best bang for your buck in the first month ?.

summitussummitus Member UncommonPosts: 1,414

I was thinking about this the other day and wondered what other people thought .

You know that game where you did'nt mind paying the 30 or 40 pounds ( or dollars ) for the fist month ,even if you did'nt carry on playing.

For me I'm gonna say Fallen Earth .. not because it's a major fantastic game or anything .. because I'm not still playing it now , but because I played it for 4 or 5 hours every single one of those 30 days , and I cant really think of another game that has done that ... mmm except maybe the Original SWG or Everquest 1 ... Fallen earth springs to mind because its still really fresh in my memory , hell I must even had a couple of all night sessions in the first 30 days too.

So yeah I thought Fallen Earth was woth every penny for that 30 days !

soo whadda you guys think ?

I found most to be great for the first month. It's that second month that always seemed more telling about the game. ;)

Out of all the MMOs I have played, PotBS and Lineage 2 were the ones that I really got drawn into during that first month. I think it's because there was a good feeling of being able to experience a wide range of what the game offers inside of such a short time. The open PvP areas, group content, crafting systems and community for both games really gave me tons to do and plenty of reasons to look forward to getting home and firing up the game to play them. Had it not been for the unyielding horde of gameplay-blocking gold farmers, Lineage 2 would be the uncontested leader of my personal list. Hell, I even found roleplaying my character in L2 to be fun!

For me it would be old school SWG.  First real chance of giving it a whirl was Jan-Feb '04 timeframe, so it was the Pre-CU/NGE days.

It took quite a bit for me to learn the game but had help from veteran players who showed me the essentials.  SWG back then had no tutorial; the manual was utterly worthless.  The gameplay was far more complex and deep than the current system it has now.  But once I started crossing that bridge on beginning to figure the game out and exploring the various worlds (started at Doerba Goefal, Corellia; took a flight to Bestine, Tatooine to join the Empire), there was no turning back and it was full speed ahead.  Combine those feelings and finally realizing the freedom I had in developing my character with the old Skillpoint / Template System?  It was great fun.  I recall looking long and hard at the Profession Calculator utilities (Kodan's Prof.Calc) or webpage based versions with vastly different builds that I'd like to end up with.

In that first month, as far as equipment goes, I was so ecstatic when I finally got the Faction Points needed (just over 7k IIRC) to get a full set of Stormtrooper Armor.  Stats sucked compared to Composite Armor, but hey... Stormtroopers scream just as much Star Wars as any Lightsaber wielding fool.

Also in that first month, it was exciting to see Rebel & Imperial PvP groups battle it out in different areas of the game.  Whether it was out in the wilds or in the cities like Coronet, Theed, and Bestine.  I still recall the old, very heavy fighting betwen Bestine & Anchorhead on Tatooine.  The extra icing on the cake was the presence of an Imperial guild that fought purely in Stormtrooper Armor or Imperial Uniforms.  Good fun seeing a group of Stormtroopers chasing down some Rebels.  The Faction Armors at the time statistically were awful, but guys like that really gave SWG that Star Wars feel that it needed more of.

    Tabula rasa

The first month was a blow but the second you found out that the content is more of the same, too bad that game could have been really awesome...

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

Vanilla WoW was, and still is, one of my fondest gaming memories of all time.

That's a bit difficult to say, because the first mmorpg I played I was probably most excited about, but in heinsight it might not have been the best. But it might still have been the most fun experience.

My first month of EVE Online I Had daily 8 to 10 hour sessions. I was completely immersed In the experience. I remember being on the road with my band at the time and my poor laptop was suffering from heat damage with all that play.

    Playing: Rift, LotRO
    Waiting on: GW2, BP

hehe ... fantastic way to spend your time on the tourbus !!!  :)  , sadly I can never get into EVE , I've tried 4 or 5 times now .. but my brain hurts after a few hours ... I know its an amazing game though , its probably that I'm just too stupid to understand and enjoy it properly !

I play guitar to btw :) played in a pub band, and loads of folk clubs .. the only thing was around then though was Pong :o !!

"sigh" .... your post makes feel all nostalgic about SWG and those times ..... I sometimes think its so sad that sooo many mmo gamers  will never get to experience that wonderful game .... R.I.P  Swg ... " sob "

Eve the best bang for the buck in the first month?  That's a new one.  Most people find it takes months to even get out of noob space and figure out how to mine effectively.

Personally I'd vote city of heroes as the best bang for your buck for a months worth of play.  That game is fun as hell for a new person just starting out.  For a vet it doesn't offer anything worth staying for though with all the enemy groups just standing around and no real AI.

I hate to praise WoW, but it does hold my best first month experience.  I love levelling and abhor raiding, so after that it's downhill for me, but the first month was a great one.

WoW hands down... back in the day, I was already a giant Warcraft nerd, so being in that universe was like "OHHHH LOOK AT THIS FROM WC2, OOOOOO LOOK THIS IT FROM WC3, OOOOO SHINY! OMG I RECOGNIZE THAT PLACE!" It continues like that for well over a month.

You say "most people" ... perhaps the guy is just one of those people that get it right away , and dont forget some people enjoy complexity just as much as some people love casual.

As far as city of hero's is concerned I guess you really could'nt get more casual that that ! .. although I believe it has alot more to it now than it did when I played it.

It's a tie for me between WoW and DF. WoW was my first MMO, so everything was new and exciting for longer than 1 month. DF was great because it brought in a mix of excitement and "real" danger that I haven't found in another MMO so far.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

You should'nt hate to praise WoW ... after all its one of the greatest developer achievments ever and loved by millions.

I personally never got passed lvl 40 but I still know its an amazing game , if that makes sense .

    Probably LotRO.

Simply because it was one of the only mmos I played where the company actually had the majority of the game actually running and working properly so I didn't have to deal with a gagillion bugs, dcs, etc.

Was really lacking in quests though at the high end at launch though.  Found that out eventually. Still impressive launch that especially after some of the game launches I have seen lately makes me all the more impressed with what Turbine did with that game.

Now, DDO on the other hand...

    We won't go there.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

    Dark Age of Camelot

    or

    Darkfall

Probably Darkfall, content rich, can do anything you want within the first month, unlike other WoW clones where all you can do is quest grind for the first month.

What content? Player tools and freedom yes. Content and Player tools are totally different.

Unless you consider mobs and a big gameworld "content" then you're incorrect themeparks have that also.

Fallen Earth Bang for buck, got the game via a promo, so game and 1st month something like 10 bucks. Great game, good price.

Most fun overall, would be second account in EQ1, 1st acount, I was going away for a while so gave it to my brother and when I was able to mess around with it again, virtually all of my old pen and paper

D&D group was on it. I remember how wondrous and huge the world was, having to have a druid to get from one side of the world to the other, and some really great times on orc highway and the Estate of Unrest.

     Such an amazing game EQ1.

    Hands down, City of Heroes.

I've never met anyone who didn't do anything but make characters for like two weeks straight when they first start playing. So many power and outfit combinations, the character creation is almost a game by itself. Then, once you get in game, the combat is the most dynamic of any MMO I've ever played. It's really a fantastic game, even with its flaws.

WoW would be second. The game is really well done in many ways, and the first month there is almost magical if you take the time to read the dialogue and quests.

I would say Darkfall.  A free trial is available so there is no reason not to try it out.

Funny thing is, it might well of been Darkfall for me too , unfortunately I gave up after about 2 weeks as I was constanly getting ganked all the time , I had'nt experienced a game world like Darkfall before, it is soo immersive !

on the other hand... maybe I was just crap at it ..... hehe :)
