Really, more of a multi-user single player game than an MMORPG. Don't know what people see in it, unless they have never experienced a true MMORPG like in the Golden Age of MMORPG's when EQ, UO, DAOC, and such were around.
Ummm, those games are still around. I've tried UO and DAOC and they just weren't for me. LotRO has everything I like in a MMO and I truely don't get the "single player game" thing. I group a lot with my kinnies. I guess a game is what you make of it. If you went in playing it like it was a single player game...then that's what ya got.
There are issues with the game..the avatars need a bit of work and I hate the pudding hair, but these are not enough reasons to keep me from playing.
Probably Ultima Online which I have played for 11 years now, I still remember the very FIRST day I played the game, it is the one MMO I have the fondess memories off and it was my first..
Omg ! ... 11 years ? .. that dude is serious dedication !
Ultima Online, FFXI and WoW. all blew me away when I first played them.
I grew up playing te Ultima Series. Ultima 4 is probably my favorite RPG of all time ( I still have it, in a lke-new box, with all the items, from 1984 for Atari 800xl). Ultima Online was like a dork's wet dream!

I would say right now Dungeons and Dragons Unlimited, Lord of the Rings Online, and Requiem Online offer the best bang for buck. They are some of the most complete mmos yet offer free access, and premium services for half the price as the competition.

I played EQ for years and loved it. I have also played LotR for years and enjoy it as well. They're both great games far as I'm concerned.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
The first month after the beta for CoH was excellent. I played as long as I could afford it. Not too long after Guild Wars began...heh...good times....waiting patiently for GW2
Feel like risking 20-30 bucks on a months worth of play? If you haven't tried Guild Wars before, try picking up Guild Wars Nightfalls. Well over a months worth of fun to be had with that game.
EQ2/Vanguard - the first month in Vanguard when it was first released was horrible, but today the game rocks, EQ2 I am sick of but it was great and go back to that game also from time to time
I would say AoC. I loved it in the first month. It was in the second month that the content started to dwindle near the 40s and I had to grind the Villas to level up. That was the beginning of the end. Beginning part of the game was top notch. Too bad Funcom didn't apply it to the rest of the game. OR made a second beginning area to appease making alts.

I thought WAR and AoC were pretty solid the first month.

World of Warcraft, largely because it was my first MMO (if GW doesn't count as one).
All it takes is one bad day.
WoW and AoC (after all fixes).
WoW
preexpansion wow
it was a euphoric first month

Guild Wars 2 is my religion

DAoC had a blast
we all know
"champions online, and that is all it was good for".
Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

As much as I hate the game it has become, Vanilla WoW was an amazing experience.
Also honorable mentions to Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, and Auto Assault. Yes, I said Auto Assault. I was very upset they closed AA. =(
had that feeling when i started wow and WAR
Vanguard.
Was a great game, despite the bugs.
SWG pre cu, many great memories with that game
DAoC - still go back from time to time
EQ2/Vanguard - the first month in Vanguard when it was first released was horrible, but today the game rocks, EQ2 I am sick of but it was great and go back to that game also from time to time
I loved Auto Assault too , and Tabula Rasa both pretty cool games that sadly shut down.
SWG Darkfall and Ultima Online plenty of things to due lots to explore and discover.
WOW.
Not because it was my first mmo, but after UO it was irritatingly bugfree, fun and playable for a new game.
