First, a bit about me. I've played WoW for 6 years on and off since 2004, started in the beta, usually quitting for a few months near the end of every expansion. I've played all classes, with a Warlock main and I've leveled a couple of alts to 80, but I prefer to focus on one character. I raid casually and PvP pretty hardcore. Here's my list of why Cataclysm will suck for me and why I won't play it, in order of importance:
Outdated Graphics
My largest issue, the graphics in the game are still ~2004. Sure, they can and have added new models and textures, and now a new water mechanic (which my computer can't display even though it's rather overqualified for the job). The game engine can only be modified so much before you have to start over from scratch to see some major improvements. I was never a huge fan of the cartoony models, and now I'm extremely tired of the way this game looks; especially the character models.
No New Classes
No new classes to level up, this is really lame if you've played them all. New races might be cool if you want to level a class you haven't played before. The only reason to play a new race for me would be to check out the starting zones.
The Old World Revisited
If you aren't leveling a new toon, this really is a lot of wasted effort on behalf of Blizzard trying to cater to newer players. Instead they could have focused on more endgame content to keep veteran players from being bored and quitting. Also quite useless to those who don't play alts at all.
Oversimplification of Class Mechanics
This happens every expansion and is really ramping up in Cata. Talent Trees, stats, etc. all being dumbed down to easy-to-gauge formats, making class knowledge less important when making talent and gear/stat choices. It will be more difficult to distinguish between strong and weak players at a glance.
Only 5 New Levels/No new talent tier
This one isn't really a big deal, since it's going to take more time to level and some talents have been changed or added to lower tiers. However, I predict it will still be faster leveling than 70-80 since there are fewer new zones in Cata.
Update: Reasons others have listed
Here are reasons others have listed in this thread for not playing Cata, if you are curious:
Races with too many crossover classes:
Gnome Priests.. Tauren Paladins, that's just stupid.
Phasing
Diminishes interactions between players in the game world.
Conclusions
I feel WoW and MMOs in general are overdeveloped to keep a healthy subscriber pool to make money. For example, Blizzard has never made more than one expansion for any of their other games (until SC2, which will have only 2 expansions). In a nutshell, I don't think I can ever come back to this game, even though I'm a huge fan. Starcraft 2, however, really has me hooked so I will probably be playing it in the years to come, in addition to Diablo 3.
Also, I am extremely eager for the announcement of Blizzard's new MMO supposedly set in a new game world. I was hoping to hear about it at Blizzcon this year but it seems we will have to wait yet another year before we even know what it's called.

Lots of people will play it. You're hardly setting the trend. But you're really doing it for yourself right? And posting about it for personnal reasons right?
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?
-Yes.

Who said anything about setting a trend? I realize a lot of people will play it, obviously, since the subscriber rate is higher than ever.
...
I'm posting about it because I feel like it, and yes I'm really doing it.

First off, how can your comp be "over qualified" if it can't run the new water mechanic?
Second, "no new talent tier"? Umm you do know they revamped the talent trees right? So that kind of takes the place of a couple new talents tacked on.
I won't play wow because i'm moving to the single player console. Mmog genre is just bland. Currently saving money for the TV which i don't currently own.
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?
-Yes.

Would just like to point out that you said your more of a "main character" type of guy. So why is no new classes such a big deal for you? Either your an alt type person and a new class would mean more content for you or you are a main character type of player and no new classes really wouldnt matter to you.
Also the graphics thing. Its been said before but I'll say it again. Graphics do not equal a good game.
Old world content is more for the alt o holics. Content for them. Calling that a bad thing is kinda silly.
Over simplifying classes. Stat wise you wont be able to tell verry quickly who hasnt done there research BUT the mechanics in even the new 5mans sure as hell will tell you who is a moron.
If its no big deal that there is only 5 new levels (and believe me there is plenty of content, I'm in the beta I've seen it) why is this even in your list?
No, I'm not buying cata either. My reason is simple. I'm just burnt out on the game itself. But if you are going to make a list dont contridict yourself by claiming to be a "main player" type person then complaining about no new classes. Or by putting something in your list and then saying it really doesnt matter. It just doesnt make sense.
This. My crappy laptop can do this.
I have to respond to this because I don't want people thinking everything you wrote is true, as while the majority of it is opinion, thus can't be true, or not, the things that aren't opinion are really annoying me:
1. I agree the graphics are outdated.
2. I like new races just as much as new classes, so not a big deal to me.
3. This is the complaint I don't get of yours, all the others are opinions so no reason to complain, but they are changing the world, and adding new level 85 zones, this expansion will have the most end game content of out of every expansion, already has a good amount. So, I don't see how an old world revamp is a bad thing at all, it doesn't effect people that are uninterested in it, and adds things to for people that are interested in it. Do you think this game was only made for you?
Stuff level 80-85 players can do:
-Archaelogy
-11 New zones TBC (9), Wotlk (13): Not bad at all. (didn't even count new goblin and worgen zones)
- 9 New dungeons. Vanilla (17), TBC (16), Wotlk (16). A lot for just the start.
-4 new Raids. Vanilla (5), TBC (9), Wotlk (9). A lot for the start.
4. I see no difference here.
5. When I leveled from 70-80, I didn't even touch half the wotlk zones, as I said before, the zone numbers are hardly any different.
-I want a Platformer MMO
I played from Vanilla, enjoyed it thoroughly all the way until WOTLK, I played through right at the end of 3.2 before I just got sick of it. If Cat had actually fixed any glaring problems and not made the problems and annoyances even worse I might consider it. But with GC in charge its not looking good.
Too many races with too many crossover classes: Gnome Priests.. Tauren Paladins, thats just stupid Im sorry, Alliance should never have gotten Evil Wolf men as a playable race either.
Over simplification of game mechanics/stats: Along with things like no longer having DR so you can just talent it instead, removal of stats like spirit are just over simplifications for people who dont want to think.
Talent trees: Again over simplified so the least common denominator can figure out the game.
Classes that were bad in WOTLK are even worse, hunters were hurt badly. Shaman are still in the doghouse especially Enh who are even worse off, if you can believe it, than they were in WOTLK. Hunter focus and the other mechanical changes were obviously made by someone who plays a Warlock. Sub rogue and Spriest fundamental end tree talents are still broken. Burst in pvp is still too much of a problem, if you thought WOTLK was bad.. just wait for high end CAT gear.
1. Gameplay must come first before graphics. ALWAYS!
2. Blizzard has stated that they don't want to introduce too many classes because otherwise the classes become too similar.
3. Level 1-60 is for anyone who cares about the lore and quest such as myself.
4. The game is already complicated enough with needless stats. Simplification was necessary
5. 5 new levels but they will probably take just as long as leveling 70-80 was. Plus, the quests are better than anything WoW has ever has.
I won't play because WoW has become a "lobby game" and I doubt that will change much in cata, in fact I wouldn't be suprised if it became even more of a lobby game than it is now.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
It's simple, i wont play WOW cause i'm bored of it. Changing the old world or adding 5 levels it would be the same thing within a month, doing the same raids and dailies non-stop.
1. Graphics should always take a second spot behind gameplay. I dont care for the Console cattle that need shinies and super graffix to play a game that has no substance, I want a game with substance and content that challenges the mind.
2 and 3. I agree about the new races only being there for fluff and to explore as an alt. While its nice to give new players something, what about the poor bastards who were raiding ICC for how many months? Does the 5 levels of content make up for having the time to deck out multiple alts in all that gear? Those 5 levels better be really special for those 80's.
4. You can thank the new casual crowd for the simplifying of talents. While CC being returned is nice, making the trees eqaute to a 1, 2 OR 3 spec (blah blah cookie cutter blah blah everyone same spec anyway) you might as well have a simple questionaire.
Question 1. Do you want to PvP? Yes/No
If Yes Autofill spec, if No GoTo Question 2
Question 2. Do you want to... a) Single Traget DPS b) AoE DPS c) Tank/Heal?
Autofill spec accordingly
Its homogenized and very simple, simple enough for any retard casual to not gimp himself, though, the mouthbreaters will do it somehow, in some epic fantastic way that defies logic and reasoning, so Ghostcrawler will wipe their diapers and make it even easier because their money is good.
You can add this to the list. The community is utter garbage. Worse than hot trash at noon on a summer day. Simply garbage.
I actually applaud them for this a lot. It really is pretty nice seeing the old world altered, and more along the lines of world of warcraft.
But other stuff I agree with. I do think the mmo model of 'add 5 extra levels' 'make characters even more powerful' 'give them even bigger numbers' is pretty dull.
Best of luck to you.. ty for your ideas.. I'm hoping that Diablo 3 doesn't turn into a SC2 disappointment.. SC2 started off with a bang, but has quickly dropped like a brick since.. I have my eyes set on GW2 and SWToR, and a couple others.. Lets hope they understand what MMORPG is all about and try to go back to that genre
1 ) NO NEW CLASSES, bottom line.
2 ) I've watched youTube videos, and I can safely say that it was like I've already experienced the new Starting Zones.
3) Played on and off for years, I could say that I'm done with it.
I've not played in months, two weeks ago I get an e-mail that my account was baned. I don't know if it's true or spam. BUT THE SAD PART IS I DON'T SEEM TO CARE.
I've been having fun in Vanguard !
To me it's quite simple why .
No not the graphics, while outdated they're OK . No not the lack of new classes , but :
- They scrapped the path of Titans which looked awesome . Way to disappoint me.
- The talent tree change is one of those "we want to cater to the more casual players" moves too many.
- WoTLK already made me sick with the simplification of raiding and the community adapting accordingly (it was funny to notice how easier getting "l33t" gear got how cockier the community became "zomg you didn't instantly get T9 when you dinged 80 ?! Out of my Heroic , noa! " )
- Gearscore . I know, it ain't blizzard's fault but it still makes me sick .
- Oh and did i already mention the new talent trees? yes it's worth two negative points to my opinion.
Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt.
Among those who dislike oppression are many who like to oppress.
One of the things being overlooked in the discussion on the talent trees is in regard to those that have not purchased through Lich King... with the 401 patch, what used to be the 51 pt talent that you got at level 60 is now the 31 pt talent that you get at level 70. Those that only have Vanilla, can no longer get to the end of a tree and will be locked to a single tree. Those that only have BC, will get to the end of the tree but again will never see another tree.
Everybody is talking about this strictly as a level 80 issue in regard to the talent builds and how they have been changed. This killed every level 60 build. This killed every 70 build.
Blizzard has basically stated if you have not bought BC or LIK...tough.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Quote from someone:
1. Gameplay must come first before graphics. ALWAYS!
Don't you think in this day and age we as gamers should expect both, Your answer is unacceptable.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
WoW doesn't even have bad graphics though. They are stylized.
I think of it like this. If Valve released an expansion to CS:S would I even bother? Nope because the game is old (to me).
Yet millions still play that game. Hell... Same goes for any other old game, when their times passed I'n my eyes it's passed.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
They are bad. It has decent art if you like that style but the graphics themselves are pretty bad.
I kinda like WoW graphics in all honesty, they are different its the art style of WC3 I honestly couldnt play it any other way, wow with AoC gfx would look horrible the only next step is have gfx akin of the cinematics but it wont be in our lifetime.
On a side note Sylvanas-EU was with 150 Queue last night again so I can see there is already a massive influx of players.
I have no objection to them, in the same way I have no objection to torchlight graphics or say, star wars the old republic graphics..They don't have to be crysis level, to be good graphics.
Get over yourself. If things annoy you, do yourself a favor and take five. I think quite a few of us are "annoyed" by people like you. By the way, if you don't like other's opinions of things and can't stand that people do "think", just stay logged into your beloved game.. Because it seems to me that you're doing yourself no good here on the forums or having your own "opinion".
I have no problems with Blizzard making the talents, stats and desision making easier then before. No one should require 3rd party addons to make it easier nor learn from a 10 - 20 page post on elitist jerks or tankspot about their class.
Blizzard is trying hard to encourage more players to group together (guild) to acomplish things rather then play solo or pug end game content. I like this move, it encourages players to work together for long term goals and bonus rewards (guild rewards). There is alot of bonus flavor content been added in Cata, new mounts, new pets, new fun items. Tons of new reputations, Thousands of quests. I was pretty upset with no new Primary Professions or a new Class, but we do get a Secondary profession Archaeology, which is great because anyone can pickup and use this profession.
Flying mounts in Azeroth and making Azeroth flyable is a great change. It'll allow higher levels to easily help a friend or easily access areas quicker. New spells at lower levels for most classes is an awesome change. Rogues can get Mutilate at level 10, Warlocks can have a Felguard at level 10, Mages a Water Elemental at 10, Warrior's get Mortal Strike at 10, lots more great abilities at lower levels. Also monsters give more EXP now so leveling is faster for new alt's or new players.
There is also alot of new Dungeons and alot of new raids been shipped with Cataclysm. Unlike WOTLK which only shipped with Naxxramas and 2 small raids, Cataclysm ships with alot more raids. The difficulty of dungeons and raids from beta information suggests it is hard again like it was in Vanilla, meaning it won't be a simple, pull group and kill.
There's lots more been added, not only to the old world, but new zones as well. Sure after 1 - 2 months the main content will die down, but as long as you have achievement's you don't have, there is always SOMETHING to do, even if you think there isn't. Such as the Seeker title, Loremaster, Explorer, Red Proto Drake achievement, the Exalted title, lots of reputation rewards still out there.
I just got Exalted with Cenarion Experdition on my DK and got the Cenarion War Hippogryph, and am now working on Netherwing Exalted. Sure even tho I have Kingslayer and really good PvE gear doesn't mean there is nothing to do.
