Can we add two more categories to this list?

    Most Under Appreciated MMO

    Most Over Appreciated MMO

seems like no matter what some of these game developers do, all their work can be summed up by the community as "they just put a crack in their game world".

Meanwhile, another game adds a new zone and a couple of content instances and its the most innovative thing known to man

When viewing these categories, people seem to be voting on a lot of hypotheticals and what they would have rather have seen a game do instead of looking what these games have done versus the rest of the genre.

haha imagine you are thinking that WOW might be one of those answers

I'm sorry but in no way should WoW be an option.

One it's not innovative to redesign your game, many games have done it and quite a few have failed.

Two, it was just an expansion not the game's release, nothing creative or new was really done.

Three, WoW doesn't innovate in the first place, they STEA.. I mean "Borrow" everything from everyone else.

    Definitely Eve.

What they're trying to do with Dust 514 is something never seen before. They are trying to bridge two different games, of two different genres, over different platforms and sync them some how.

I'm afraid to raise my expectations but I that this works out for them and brings hits all targets. It's refreshing to see someone try something new once in a while.

If that's not innovative I don't know what is!

(Though I guess giving them credit ovre 2 games might be considered cheating hehe)

    1. For the first time in history an MMORPG was rebuilding its core landscape and beginners player experience throughout all these launching lands and quests.

Up until now any MMORPG just added some new continent and was spreading its already thin populations, hence made it less playable due to players lacking. Innovative.

    2. The Dungeon finder makes it possible that all "trillion" dungeons already in the game can be played within a reasonable time limit. No longer are there "dead" dungeons in an MMORPG. The downside of PUG's was overshadowed by the simple fact content is played with much more variety in choices. Also dungeons were mostly redone for this expansion too. The new guild leveling is not innovative but counters the "PUG" cross server mechanic.

    3. Cata uses world changing events throughout all leveling experiences. That simply means the design of some zones have multiple realities and need to be designed in multiple forms. It is the start of "classic MMORPG meets Oblivion" in world changing effects for the player. The fact it is mostly being used in the leveling experience means it has little to no negative impact on the end (grouping) game nor the dungeonand Raid or Realm PvP grouping (Tol Barad - which does change every time of ownerschip).

It is clear that Blizzard was more innovative than all of the other candidates. Because these techniques above will hopefully be used by new MMO's. Although the costly techniques behind it exclude any Indy developpers.

You are right for the first time an MMO completely changed it's game from the ground up instead of just taking on "New Content". I commend Star Wars Galaxies for being the first to have done this.

Oh wait, you thought WoW was the first.... my bad.

    2. Congratz on WoW taking the initiative and doing something as unique as copying a lobby style games mechanics?

Sorry can't agree here lol. Innovation needs to be something new not something other MMO's use and get called non MMO's for using lol.

    3. Yeah... the personal instance for nodes, quests, NPC's and etc. have been around for awhile as well.

So WoW is the most innovative because they pulled a SWG NGE ... then they are also the most innovative for using mechanics they found in other MMO's?

I guess I just don't consider that innovation.

I'm not sure how the character creator in eve is anywhere neer inovative... it might have been a few years ago, but now with stuff that was in APB (r.i.p) or hell, Aion, it's already a few years behind.

    Errr.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5i_mgF7Vas

APB is cool for wider range of customization, Eve Character Creator is good for better accuracy.

    This is not a game.

WoW may be polished and play great but anything but innovative, and they highly lack attention to detail on many levels. I mean a company that big with that much funding behind them, should have Hideo Kojima  as much attention to detail before I give them innovative in anything.

Main things come to mind are animations in game on mobs number of times I see things graphically incorrect, modeled incorrectly or seemingly programed wrong, more music that I would listen to in game... yeah, theres just a lot they can do but don't, not saying the game is bad it isn't but lacks any real innovation.

Really its just them doing what works(thats not innovation, its the opposite) and cranking out A LOT of that work.

Details can always change it's the idea that counts.

I said this earlier, but only because WOW makes a lot of profit and has lots of employees doesn't mean that this factor should be held against it. Other MMO"s are most welcome to do the same. No one is stopping them.

You need to go back and read up, because until i mentioned that you are confusing dynamic with permanent changes you didn't even realise it. Also once again, revamping and redrawing the whole world in darkfall is not same as shattering in WOW. You are still trying to make comparisons between two very different style of introducing new content.

Also, GM controlled event is not an innovation, and i have no idea what the AI has got anything to do with it?

Nobody is stopping them, an object is, called money, lol.

This is very true, this game got me off of playing WoW for 2-3 months and heck I still play it off and on, it is flat up fun to level up in and leanr this dungeons for the first time. The fact and F2P "MMORPG" can do this is great.

Secondly is the action based aspect, people don't give credit to the hit box functionality of it either and its in game physics. Its not a matter that its ultra important and optimum, its the fact that it exists.

This game isn't polished but thats not what innovative is, a polished game is what Blizzard has been doing for 6 years, nothing new about that. Innovative is they tried something and it functions enough to be creditied for, it doesn't have to be perfect.

Again I don't find WoW overall innovative but to do it just one thing that is really innovative on their part is Phasing in game, it happens real time and such and changes as you progress to, other games may have versions of this but not on the scale as blizzard and internally its really the only new concept of blizzard that they truly went excersising in Cata. Still though, new modeling, map editing and such doesn't warranty enough on my boat.

If you are familiar with game development tools and how to use them and how much work people do in games, most of Cata's work was probably modeling, art and programming, actual game design "innovativeness" sucks, but works well.

Details can always change it's the idea that counts.

WoW as most innovative? Really? Updating the graphics a smidge is hardly worth the nomination. Vindictus by far more worthy, even if it falls short of the droves and droves of fans who don't know any better.

Wow does not need attention to detail when they can easily woo their fanbase with a few small graphical upgrades and some new sparkly ponies to ride around on. OOOOooooo pretty!
