Hah yeah I just saw that. Well that makes it easy. Just look at how 'big' is this news, and how so many readers are going to that thread. Stuff like that is responsible for the death of the journey in MMOs, in my opinion.
What part of they used a glitch to hit 85 don't people get
Why not? why would Blizzard would make it different? everything is working fine isn't it? why to make unnecessary radical changes?
Super Mario Bros. was also working just fine. Should have ended it there.
it's been what over 20 years since mario came out and last time i checked you're still jumping on crap. that was THE worst comparison i think i've ever seen. if you logged in and played WoW for an hour you would notice that the entire game world has changed, over 50% of the quests have changed and all the classes have changed. my gosh what more do you want?
What part of they used a glitch to hit 85 don't people get
It's not a question of how he/she did it, it's a question of how much attention this 'news' draws.
It probably be a 'flash in the pan' type of story. When WotLK came out the news that someone was level 80 the next day seemed like a big story and a couple days later noone remembered who the person was.
This will probably have he same fate as the 'town bakes world's biggest pretzel' story. It will be news for a day and then everyone will forget about it till next expansion.

[Mod Edit]
Truth be told no one has come up with a better formula to please a targeted audience. Can't blame blizzard that every game to come out since, with the exception of a few, have been complete failures.
Super Mario Bros. was also working just fine. Should have ended it there.
Comparing MMO to a single player console game? really?
If it is not broken, don't fix it.
Tell me why it doesn't apply?
Gaming is a part of the experience industry. People are looking for experiences. Repeating the same game for 5 years is not an experience after the 100th time you've done it. New and different experiences keeps it fresh.
Why does Blizzard keep releasing raids with different bosses and objectives? They were working just fine, why change anything?
I'm saying an expansion pack should take it much further. Otherwise the game just becomes stale. Just like playing the same Super Mario Bros. in different environment becomes stale after the 10th incarnation.
People don't seem to understand this simple concept.
If you honestly look at the New Super Mario Bros it is not that different then Super Mario Bros for the NES. Just polished graphics, and a couple of extra's thats about it, these games haven't evolved in ages.
If you feel the game gets stale, there is no X-pack that can help you with that. WoW in it's core will stay the same just like any other game that gets an x-pack (Bad Company Vietnam, is just BC but with a different skin for instance). Expensions are ment to expand the content not change the whole game.
I think a lot of gamers, a lot of developers and a heck of a lot of investors would argue that the "model" is fail.
I think you would be wrong about that.
Maybe I used the wrong examples? There are few companies that benefit from this (those who copy the ideas and bring them to the large public) and most other companies don't.
Just because few select companies can use the formula to their advantage does not make it a successful formula in general. Not for the developers, not for the gamers, and definitely not for the industry.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Well it does mean the formula is succesful, not for everybody but it is succesful in general.
It's like saying, the concept of sportscars isn't succesfull. Only a couple of brands profit from it and others aren't succesful in it. So the concept is fail.
What forumla? Copy and make it better has always been the formula from day one. it works in almost every industry.
Nope, it has recently become the formula as the risks get higher.
It also doesn't work in every industry. Actually, it works in every industry except the creative industry (the experience industry in other words).
There has been only few companies in any given industry that have benefited from copying. Microsoft, Apple, Activision-Blizzard to name a few. It worked for them, because they came at the right time, and made the ideas public (while not creating the ideas themselves).
The rest of the industry? Sure, they try to copy and make better- but it doesn't work. This is the experience industry we're talking about- games are about experiences, just like movies, or books, or even tourism. Experiences won't just stay the same no matter how many times you do something in particular. Bungee jump once, maybe twice, and it's a unique experience... do it 100 times, it loses it's appeal. That's how these things work.
I'm sure you must like the fact that TV is full of reality shows and CSI and Hospital series, and that 00's music has been largely unoriginal and disappointing, and that with the success of Call of Duty comes million spin-offs that take over the industry.. but I don't. I don't think it's good for any industry.
Movie industry, being the oldest out there (afaik), is doing a much better job at this. We get high-budget movies like Inception that can be somewhat original and refreshing, even if not anything genre-changing. There's still a lot of crap in the AAA-movies but not all of them end up like that.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
It's like saying, the concept of sportscars isn't succesfull. Only a couple of brands profit from it and others aren't succesful in it. So the concept is fail.
Your conlusion just doesn't make sense to me
Yeah, but that analogy doesn't involve sportscar industry being ruined by this kind of concept. Making cars isn't exactly a part of the experience industry, although it can be situationally.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
I am not interested in the same old same old World of Warcraft, so my question is simple; Are there any new game features? Or is this game still all about grinding gear? My sub runs out tomorrow, maybe someone here could tell me theres something for me in it now with it's Cataclysm release, cause I am not interested in playing the game just to get to level 85 then start (again) grind gear.
Maybe it now could offer:
-Politics?
-Housings?
-World PvP that matter?
-Player cities?
-etc etc
Wall in Text Incoming....
First off. Age of Conan and SWG are that way -->. Im going to be a nice guy and warm you that last I heard those games arent doing the very well, and are arguably not that fun currently. Play at your won risk. /Sarcasm off
Really though, if you read ANY news websites about Cataclysm you would have been overwhelmed at the mass amount of things that have been revised.
1.Politics dont work in this game, and are not that fun in the games that do have it.
2. Same for player housing.
3. World PVP that matter? in what way? Objectives? Lets see theres a WHOLE zone dedicated to PVP that have objectives that need to be completed. Then theres dailies that include PVP (WotLK had them at least) as well as achievements, ranks, and rewards for said achievements.
4.Same for Player cities.
Sounds like you want to play a City Builder SIm. I hear Cities XL is pretty good

And you just pointed to why it works with your last paragraph. Why are artist still making money, COD selling millions, and the CSI/L&O/ER spinoffs continually being kept on the market. Copy paste works especially in this sector to where the cost of taking the long road doesn't pay off. Whether you like it or not, the corporate executives and such are concerned about the bottom line: $$$. If something copied and pasted all over our foreheads gets them revenue, they will do it.
Now are there other options for games and entertainment? Sure but its few and far between.
You sure you understand the simple concept behind WOW's success? everything works. that is the simplest explanation. If Blizzard was bleeding subs or incurring losses i would understand their need to make some radical changes to game to attract more customers. As far as being stale, we have been hearing this since BC expansion. But over the years the subs have only gone up not down.
Players who love WOW want same of more. As long as the quality and polish is there it doesn't matter to them. You can't blame Blizzard for playing safe. like i said when they are raking in so much money with what they got, why to take unnecessary risks?
I'm not blaming them, but "it's just an xpack" excuse doesn't fly. I am also going to criticise them for not taking "unnecessary risks" even if I understand why, because that's what's killing this industry, especially this part of the industry.
Also, as far as I remember they had new ideas for this xpack, then they scrapped them. What the hell!
Ahh, so you want to criticise just for the sake of criticising i get it. Even though there is absolutely no reason for Blizzard to make changes to their game. Also, you are being over dramatic. It makes sense for Blizzard to take risks with their next MMO project and not ruin a perfect setup where million of players are happy and enjoying themselves. I am sorry but majority rules and the day majority of WOW players are unhappy, Blizzard will take the risk to save their game.
Risks just for sake of taking risk is bad business strategy.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Explain why you are reporting this post: (750 characters max.)
WoW could implement most of the features listed by the OP, it's not funny at all...
World PvP with objectives (like a poster mentioned above), dynamic horde/alliance events for controlling certain areas? GM controlled alliance/horde boss mobs with guards, escorting important characters to places, delivering resources to places... I'm sure more could be added/done
Player houses, instanced most likely for WoW but easily done just like the old PvP rewards place in SW. Customise your house, interact with your house, earn trophies to place there? All would be a nice touch.
Player cities probably not for WoW with it's set lore and areas. Sieging down NPC cities in faction war zones as dynamic events / war efforts? Perhapes. Rebuilding afterwards ofc.
Politics could be done in the form of advancing an exisiting factions agenda through quests/grinding/objectives. Guilds could obtain political clought for server firsts or high PvP scores? What it would lead to is to be considered though.
WoW doesn't have these features because they're impossible to add, it's simply because they have a fine working game with a huge memberbase they don't need to innovate their game. More of the same keeps WoW players content and paying. Why risk upsetting that balance / making an effort.
Don't not confuse WoW devs lazyness and inability to develop the game further and take it to the next level with being 'unable to' or 'it doesn't belong in WoW'.
Ahh, so you want to criticise just for the sake of criticising i get it. Even though there is absolutely no reason for Blizzard to make changes to their game. Also, you are being over dramatic. A) I just said "it's just an xpack" excuse doesn't fly, no matter how good of a tactic it must be for them. You seem to not want anything new either, but that is understandable- new is scary and people cling to the old ways, wishing for having the same experience they had so long ago (it doesn't work that way though!)
Why does it make sense to take risk with their next MMO (but not this one)? Does old content suddenly become meaningless if something new and fresh is implemented to complement it? Ah, right, Blizzard can't introduce anything new without throwing away all their old efforts first..
The whole industry works on risks. Without risk, there is no innovation. Without risk, there are no new experiences. Without risks, the industry becomes bland.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

And lastly, why you defend this sort of tactic is beyond me. You won't lose anything from it, only gain.
XPAC is not an excuse because it is what it is;;an extension to game which wasn't met to overhaul WOW game mechanics from scratch but to provide more polished and fun content. Please, don't blame a gaming company trying to run a business for your over blown expectations.
Its a business, They will play safe and take risks only when really needed. How does it make sense to fiddle with something that is working perfectly?
Like i said risk just for sake of taking risk is bad business. The day they start loosing subs and WOW end up with 200K or lower subs, you won't need to remind Blizzard about making radical changes to their game.
Why the hell they would want to upset 12 million subscriber? oh yeah because industry is dying and one must start taking risks (even though there is no need for it).
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

I'm still not talking about game mechanics- there's no need to do anything about those, if not in a class balance type of way.
And I still know why they aren't taking risks. I don't, as a potential customer, agree with those reasons. Why you do, is beyond me. Are you itching to play the Cataclysm just like you were itching to play vanilla long time ago? Is this "new" content so much better? Is it not bland yet? Do you not think you may find something else refreshing for a change? I'm not talking about radical NGE-changes here, for god's sake. Just something else to do. I'm sure everyone will be upset.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
I understand it wont last long. It just gets too much exposure for my taste. The story about WotLK's first 80 lasted for a while, and even longer due to Blizzard taking action against this guy for cheating.
It becomes the talk of the town on each server. Then the chat rooms are drifting away from WoW being a just game to who reaches 85 first and who starts running on the gear treadmill first.
I'm still not talking about game mechanics- there's no need to do anything about those, if not in a class balance type of way.

Rated battlegrounds is kinda of a big deal for some customers. I'm not playing WoW anymore but I used to root for having such feature since vanilla. Guild progression can be a big deal too.

I am itching to get hold of my CE because after whole year of MMO failures, i would be more than happy to enjoy some quality and polished content. Even if it is more of the same. As long as it keeps me engaged and busy why not?

Aye.. when you are content with so little, that's fine.
Must be a great experience for you and feel just as fun and fresh as it did back when you started playing. Nothing can top more of the same.
You can also rest easy knowing that Blizzard is getting juust as much profit as before. That's what matters, in the end.

It's not a question of how he/she did it, it's a question of how much attention this 'news' draws.
Tol Barad? That's as close as it gets to what you want, though it is nowhere close to ideal.
Besides that gimmick, yeah, it's just more of the same, being supposedly more challenging than the walk in the park WOTK was.

...Because they use the same formula.
It's a pretty fail of a formula, tbh.
Although I think the same thing about what Activision is doing generally. Call of Duty: Let's Milk It 2, just as much fail.
Or it can go beyond just gaming, to other parts of the creative industry. Survivor Season 23: Nothing Has Changed Since Season 1-Island.
Some people don't agree, that's okay.

Why the hell they would want to upset 12 million subscriber? oh yeah because industry is dying and one must start taking risks (even though there is no need for it).
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

To put it in a nutshell, our society is about to hit the fan, grades are dropping, obesity is going up,childhood the USA is going to lose its super power status before too long, but hey, as long as we have a cheap method to babysit our kids, all will be well no?
Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
I'm still not talking about game mechanics- there's no need to do anything about those, if not in a class balance type of way.
And I still know why they aren't taking risks. I don't, as a potential customer, agree with those reasons. Why you do, is beyond me. Are you itching to play the Cataclysm just like you were itching to play vanilla long time ago? Is this "new" content so much better? Is it not bland yet? Do you not think you may find something else refreshing for a change? I'm not talking about radical NGE-changes here, for god's sake. Just something else to do. I'm sure everyone will be upset.
