You might think the Voice over is stupid but i don't. Seeing as thats what is suppose to seperate this from every other game, so that it's just not reading text but instead having the people speak to you through voice.
If they took the voice overs out. then this would be like every other game. Click hit accept continue (aka boring to me). You might not like the graphics but they seem intersting to me. See how that works?
I know how I (and i'm sure a lot of people) play mmo games. Obviously I never turn down graphics .... :P In game importance of graphics compared to something like voice acting is incomparable .
Hmmm. Well, tastes differ of course, and I agree that the graphics or better said foremostly the character models aren't the best looking around - although still better than a WoW, LotrO or EQ2 - but these graphics don't look that bad to me, pretty acceptable actually:

Voice over is that. Voice over. It doesn't distinct itself from other games not even to the minimum. GW2 has voice over also and it does a hundred other things. A run-of-the-mill with voice over is still run-of-the-mill.
is GW2 completely voiced over? nope sorry. There is no comparison here. And voice over goes a long way in making world immersive. And i would disagree that a game can not distinct itself from other games due to voice overs. Perfect example is AOC, which is fully voiced over during the Tortage and once out, when NPC gives you a blank look with text scrolling at bottom of your screen you realise what a huge impact voice overs can make.
GW2 will ship with voice over equal of over 60 feature length films and yet why does it have to be so talked about for swtor? It's because the only thing they are doing "different" than other games.
We have not yet played any of these game so its hard to say where the difference is but point remains. Voice over makes a huge difference in immersion. My point was never to show which game has better voice overs. You called SWTOR run of the mill voice over and i disagree with that comment.

Depends. There are moments that I leave the music of the game on, like in the Cimmerian regions in AoC, it's really immersive. I also left game sound on at cutscenes of the MMO's I played, so I don't see me doing that differently with SWTOR.
Anyway, for those who're on vent or watching tv or whatever, there's always the option to have text subtitles instead, while other gamers on the other hand will still be having VO and game sound on for added immersion.

Maybe it's time that you both leave to rest this e-peen contest and excessive pingpong quoting of eachother, and stay with the OP topic?
So, one person doesn't like the graphics and thinks VO is overrated, so he'll probably won't be playing SWTOR anyway and is only hanging around these forums. Another person likes the graphics and VO and will enjoy it. Fine, we know the viewpoints. There's MMO's for all different tastes, no need for everyone to play SWTOR if they don't enjoy it, seems simple to me.

I know and thats why developers dumb down MMO's to appeal to the 'Farmville Generation' of gamers. Its a shame.
Games used to be challenging, now, a person with the intellectual capacity of a boiled potatoe can complete them. Whilst watching telly, listening to music, talking, preparing food, eating, sleeping/or in a coma.

It is quite well established by now that those who enjoy voice overs and sound are equally excited about graphics. I am one of those. So stop trolling now please. or you have anything worth while to add to discussion?
9/10 out of ppl i have played in WOW, GW, WAR, Aion were ussualy on mumble/vent/TS + were watching TV or listening to other music, it's not like those games are hard for some ppl :P
It should be obvious that if you can watch TV and listen to music while playing an MMO and having vent on, that you'll also have no trouble with having VO on. If multitasking or distraction would be a problem, then you'd already have a problem having the tv or music on while playing and on vent.

Seems simple to me as well, but I guess we're just simple people. I've never understood the point of hanging around the forum of a game that I have no interest in playing, especially when the direction of the game is set in stone already.
The graphics may not be as realistic as many would want, however, having played mmo's with decent graphics (like Aion, eve online, Final fantasy xiv and everquest 2 to name a few) I believe, and it is my own opinion not one I wish to shove down other people's throats, that game play is definatly more that graphics. Some great games like D & D online have not so great graphics but a decent investment in trying to make the game playable for the long run. I hope this is what Bioware is doing here too.
This is very true for me and I think If people just give some games a chance Instead of the usual "at first glance the GFX suck".
Games I ended up loving after I hated the GFX :
WW2 Online< Depth, I just love Depth.
Space cowboy < I know, but it had Kicka** PvP and was my first love, a few simple community gameplay features made it a good mmog also, like Leaders, subleaders, made you feel part of your faction and that you had something to achive with PvP.
Also Runescape says alot about this subject.
I do hope The Old Republic is good as I realy need another Sci Fi MMO.
I thought this was about graphics? Why are we on VO?
If you don't like the voice overs, fine. Then state your opinion and leave it at that. It doesn't matter what you do in a game, it doesn't affect the VO. you can choose to turn them off if you want and read the quest text, it doesn't stop you.
If your trying to say VO are useless i think many people will disagree with you. There is quite a bit of difference from someone saying something and when they use text.
First off as proof: here on the forums unless you use the word /sarcasm noone will know your being sarcastic, becuase emotions don't go through text. This goes for a lot of emotions. You can put *sobs* in text but it's quite a bit different when you actually hear someone cry. It gives an emotional attachment of sorts. If you want to listen to mumble or whatever and so do your friends so be it. But your choosing to negate a feature of the game.
But enough about VO as thats not this topic. If you want to discuss VO theres always the new topic button.
As for the graphics themselves as i stated earlier it was their design choice to go with this. They felt (as per the devs said) that they didn't want their game to look like all the others coming out. They wanted it to stand out, therefore they choose (on purpose) a design style that would be somewhat unique (which is inspired by World of warcraft) but still have the Kotor feel.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
I think it looks pretty sweet. My hope is it is as vast and open as the screenshots make it look. I get the feeling it will be a bunch of invisible walls though. I'll still play....hell...Age of Conan is like that and I really dig that game. Still...all the open worldness of SWG or WOW with the Bioware KOTOR theme would be the best.
It is.
It is what?...lol...vast or channelled with invisible walls?
I know this is way back in the thread but i just came across a quote that answers this question.
Quote James Olhen: Our game is very open. We’ve developed several worlds, and each of those worlds is wide open, huge worlds with many square kilometers and you’re able to explore those worlds any way you want - TenTonHammer
i like the graphics...looks very much like KOTOR styled graphics. And after the first month..do you really notice the graphics? i always find myself staring in awe of games like lotro and eve for like the first month...but after that...i dont even notice them anymore. Look at AoC...i LOVED THE GRAPHICS. But after the first month, couldnt resub...the game just was not that good (gameplay wise)

Anyway, for those who're on vent or watching tv or whatever, there's always the option to have text subtitles instead, while other gamers on the other hand will still be having VO and game sound on for added immersion.
I think that was at 4:00, not 4:22. That's another scene, same BH and action, same planet but different location.

I just dont see how you can play any game, mmo or not while listening to music, watching tv and talking to people unless the game is as shallow as farmville, solitaire, bejewelled, etc.
If i might advice you, close your are eyes while doing it, becouse graphics might not be up to the standart of the sound and might spoil your experience :P.

9/10 out of ppl i have played in WOW, GW, WAR, Aion were ussualy on mumble/vent/TS + were watching TV or listening to other music, it's not like those games are hard for some ppl :P
And Cypher as usual trying to steal the limelight and coming off as a better man. I like your style. But to be clear i have participated in less e-peen contest in this entire topic compared to you. Even though there was no e-peen contest here just a simple discussion. You have spent lot more time here defending graphics of the game.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

I know and thats why developers dumb down MMO's to appeal to the 'Farmville Generation' of gamers. Its a shame.
Games used to be challenging, now, a person with the intellectual capacity of a boiled potatoe can complete them. Whilst watching telly, listening to music, talking, preparing food, eating, sleeping/or in a coma.
It is quite well established by now that those who enjoy voice overs and sound are equally excited about graphics. I am one of those. So stop trolling now please. or you have anything worth while to add to discussion?
Bite Me
It should be obvious that if you can watch TV and listen to music while playing an MMO and having vent on, that you'll also have no trouble with having VO on. If multitasking or distraction would be a problem, then you'd already have a problem having the tv or music on while playing and on vent.

Woot so many people grasping to straws nowadays .
here i will put it in bold with maybe bad grammar , so atleast if you hate it so much .
You can bash something .
SO ITS WRONG FOR A COMPANY TO MAKE A PRODUCT THAT CATCH YOUR ATTENTION .
INSTEAD OF WATCHING TV ,CHATTING YOU GET CAPTIVATED OR IMMERSED INTO THE GAME EXPERIENCE ?
Well i wish more companies did that , and we would had a wonderfull MMORPG year in 2010 .
Instead of this is what people want , A BOX PUT IN X critters and slay them !!.
Sorry VO and Cinematic is something that works , even in WoW without all VO cinematic cutscenes , those indiana jones cutscenes in Uldum .
Where excellent and fun .
Seems simple to me as well, but I guess we're just simple people. I've never understood the point of hanging around the forum of a game that I have no interest in playing, especially when the direction of the game is set in stone already.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
