Dragon Age is seriously over hyped,it like a shiny movies and boring as hell.

Drakangsang is a better game and does more to bring back the old BG1-2 feel.

Elder Scrolls lost it's way with Oblivion,it's the hard work from modders that keep that game alive.

Hopefully the devs will not make the same mistake as last time and go back to the winning formula that was Morrowind.

As for BioWare, well they lost their way a while ago, they don't make RPG with depth or feeling, they make boring movies now which they try to pass off as rpgs.

The Witcher 1 ee eats dragon age for breakfast so shall The Witcher 2 assassin of kings.

But yes,2011 will be a great year for mmorpg and single rpg gaming.

I love the witcher. Seriously it was a fun and immersive game but I still can't compare it to a Bioware or Bethesda product also hardly anyone knows about that game because it's PC only. If you haven't figured it out by now unless your Blizzard noone gives a rats ass about PC exclusives outside the small group of hardcore tech geeks. Honestly I think it's sad because The witcher should be on platforms that give it more exposure. It's too good to be stuck on such a niche platform that's known for Blizzard and mmorpgs only.

I have to kinda agree. Dragon Age 2 and Witcher 2 are easily my most anticipated sp RPGs of the year (and ES5), but after playing DA and The Witcher I have to say there was something special about that last one almost rendering DA unplayable. While DA has a good story, The Witcher just excelled in everything and while DA made me exit the game due to boredom in a few places, I never ever thought of doing that in The Witcher. Fortunately, my playthrough was with the Enhanced Edition, I heard the first one had some issues here and there. As for ES5 I have my concerns because I didn't like Oblivion a lot, especially unmodded. This video of the witcher 2 is from september 2009 and is nothing short of amazingimage

Now if only they will OVERHAUL the gameplay.

    1. Get rid of or overhaul enemy levelling so that I like it

    2. Get rid of the need for "efficent levelling" in order to get +5 skill bonuses

    3. Find a way to make 1st person melee combat better

    4. Overhaul the NPCs - character animations - looks - daily routines...

    5. Find a way so that people won't become gods - arcane university made things become so damn easy

    6....

I would assume 5 years after oblivion they will do all of the above, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will end up better, but it's bethesda so it's going to be a 9 either way.

I kind of think that if people took these games for what they are instead of what people want them to be, they would be a lot more fun for them.

I don't ever remember going to the arcade as a kid and applying such scrutiny to the video games there. If I liked them I played them. If I didn't I just moved along to find one I liked. but I never thought to compare joust to space invaders to galaxian.

then again, it always comes down to personal preference doesn't it? I've played through DA several times but never got through the witcher. Played through morrowind and oblvion many times (and I'm still playing them) but I've tried gothic and gothic 2 and never got beyond a few hours play at most.

    I couldn't stand drakensang.

But to my first point, DA was always going to be a more linear game where your character takes place in a particular story. It was theatrical yet from the same family as baldur's gate and neverwitner nights. It didn't have some of the touches that BG had such as actual death for your characters or a greater sense of exploration but it traded this for a tighter narrative.

Oblvion doens't have the scope of morrowind but in my opinion has far more exciting combat and for those people who don't like to explore or travel it "tightens" the game play/narrative. With mixed results I'll admit.

For instance, I'm assuming that some players don't think of internal storyline when they play these games, but I know that it is somethign that is always in the back of my mind.

So, in oblivion, toward the end when you have to go back to the Imperial city with Martin, the fast travel makes more sense from a narrative point of view. Espcially after all the previous excitement. If it was a movie I'd have no doubt that there would be a cut to them approaching the city and of course the next part of the story/narrative.

If it was Morrowind, you would have to run all the way back to the imperial city and lose a bit of the momentum as you fought whatever wildlife along the way. Sort of anticlamactic.

However, after kvatch, when you are taking martin to cloud ruler temple, using fast travel wouldn't feel right as it seems a run through the wilderness to get martin there, all the while avoiding possible enemies out to get him (doesn't happen but from a narrative point of view it makes sense to assume there are agents looking for him in order to make sure he's dead).

In looking at these games I think one needs to evaluate them based on what they are trying to do in the scope of the developers efforts as opposed to just comparing daggerfall with morrowind with oblivion.

There are always strengths and weaknesses but each game strives to improve upon what has gone before in order to make the games more exciting and engaging.

For some like myself, getting lost in a game like morrowind works. For others, they seem more engaged in story and action. getting lost for them is just a time sink.

I never mind being the guy who stops the big evil, but your point is well taken regading games like morrowind or oblvion where you can take months off and eventually come back and say "ah, ok, NOW i'm ready, what have you got. But make it quick because I have golf at noon".

I would probably be problematic but it would be nice if there were game play elements that allowed for you to fail and then from that failure you can go forth.

At least in a limited fashion.

Sometimes there really is no sense of urgency. That's why when I play a game like oblivion I have to create reasons why I don't need to immediately have to run to "x" place and do "y".

Felt like oblivion fell short in a lot of areas where it should have improved.  The melee combat and the spell system, as well as their synergy with themselves and each other, left a lot to be desired.  I had expected more of an improvement from Morrorwind.  I didn't particularly care for the mob scaling either, because it became easy to memorize spawn locations and it felt silly to suddenly have top-level mobs appearing where wolves were a few days earlier.  I also had plenty to nitpick about character development, leveling speed, dungeon cut-and-paste, reused NPC voice overs (pay for some damn voice overs or have less citizens), errand side-quests with little value, AI reactions, and a lack of more sophisticated guild/group advancement quest chains like the dark brotherhood, or the house lines in morrorwind.  I don't need fetch or kill quests to keep me busy in a single-player RPG, I have enough of those in an MMO and at least other people to do them with.

Not to mention the awful save-bug that caused both of my long-term games to get lost.  Ugh, don't let that get past quality control for the love of god.

If they can fix those, or even a majority of those, and still provide plenty to explore with a beautiful landscape, I'll be happy to play.  Otherwise it will just be another extended expansion ongoing, and still inferior, since the release of Morrorwind.

The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night.

From PC Gamer: Skyrim to use new Game Engine.

"Bethesda Softworks community manager Nick Breckon has confirmed that the next

Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, will use an all new engine. This is contrary to a

recent rumour that Bethesda’s next game would still use the Gamebryo engine that

powered The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

The controversy around Gamebryo can be summarised as: good at trees, crap at

faces. It made Oblivion’s landscapes gorgeous, but led to some ugly people and

odd behaviour. The way it transitioned between low and high detail scenery as

you moved through the world also caused some blurry textures and suddenly

    appearing objects on some machines.

Since Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax now owns id Software, the second most

popular theory was that Skyrim might use id Tech 5, the engine developed for

their next game Rage. Apparently not – “all new” suggests this is one developed

specifically for Skyrim, or at least not seen in other games yet. Here’s Nick’s

Some of the major quests in Oblvion took a bit of time to warm up. For instance, I had started the thieves' guild quest but it was a bit tedious. In any case, after a year or so I decided to replay oblvion and made a thief/assassin character. Well, as I made it through the thieves' guild quest it really opened up and is one of my favorite in the game.

The only quest that really left me cold was fighters' guild.
