Star Wars: The Old Republic: PvP in the Old Republic

At a recent Bioware event, MMORPG.com's Ben PerLee had the opportunity to talk PvP with Gabe Amatangelo, Lead PvP Designer. Called warzones, each PvP area offers unique and special elements to keep things fresh, as well as remind players of the universe of The Old Republic. Amatangelo had a lot to say about this, so read on more for his side of The Old Republic. Be sure to let us know what you think below.
Any fan of Star Wars: The Old Republic is probably approaching the game from many different angles. After all, most information for the game has been focused on the hundreds of hours of voice work and the Bioware pedigree story telling. This is all grand and good, but any good MMO doesn't just rely on the first portion of the game. End-game and PvP is just as important, and if The Old Republic gets too caught up in telling stories, the actual game could suffer.

This was really interesting till I hit the bit that said 8 v 8. I thought the PvP in a star wars game should be large, epic scale fights. 8 is not large and epic to me. I was hoping for fights in the 30s at least, similar to the pvp area in SWG where you get some really nice big battles going.

The warzone released is 8 vs 8, however the devs said there was more warzones on the way and of varying sizes. also they've said there would be open world pvp.

I'll have to keep searching for the varying sizes of warzones. Will get back to you on that one.
Edit; ignore my statement on the varying sizes i can't find the quote and darth hater says they don't know either. Still theres open world pvp for ya.

@ pompey606: I wouldn't worry too much. I agree 8 vs 8 is not what I exoected but I'm also convinced, even though it's dangerous to have such hopes, BioWare will make larger battlegrounds where players are more than just 8. I hope for something similar to WoW's AV size.

There is no open-world PVP now - It's all instanced?
So good information but hope PVP warzones ar emore than "visual easter eggs" , I mean Halo did that already, what about cooperative groups without an objective like "treaty is off this planet" to kill the otherside that is more viseral than capture flag, turrent control, etc. for me
I think is awesome there is still some voiceover in pvp, and some PVP scenarios can be defend or attack would be great, but I think KOTOR has alot of options for cronfration even public in day light attacking another player which if possible would be what most pvpers in mmos want which is provoke and get response to fight, others like objectives and massive 24 vs 24 army vs army raids other like plant explosive, others capture does TOR have it?

Somehow... I just dont feel it... I wanted this to be awsome. But it just doesnt Sound all that great..
-Closed Misions environements where only you and your party does the story..
-No world PvP of any sort (unless they announce it elsewhere?)
- 8v8 battles...pvp battle grounds....

For crying outloud ... 8v8 ... anyway... Had a bad feeling about Bioware + MMO Starwars IP... and my feelings were right on spot..
i will never play 15$ a month to play a Co-op game. Never.
in a mmo i want people , Big guild events, Busy areas with people trading / chatting whatever.
Its supposed to be social ! not (ok theres 4 of us , lets Do the Story and be done with the game's Main attraction they been speaking of)

I really don't want to pull a facepalm right now so instead i'll link some articles for you. (which i put into your post. Your going to have wide open worlds, crafting 2 forms of pvp, world quests, personal quests. If it's in a normal mmo its in this game.

It's smart to start with 8v8.....makes it easier for them not to fail.
Those "other" developers who love to claim 50v50 pvp for release, and then FAIL miserably just end up crippling the game and tarnishing it permenantly before they get around to fixing it.

You know it'd be nice if in this day and age, people did interviews on video instead of text. I mean I like reading and all, but really only if it's in some adventure story or something similar. This, I just can't follow. And even like when Gabe Amatangelo was talking about warzone sizes, the first sentence didn't make sense. Those types of things need to be edited to make more sense. To write word for word what they say is great and all, but it just confuses people who weren't there.
So long as we aren't forced to take part, I don't really care.

wait! 8 vs. 8 on small extra pvp maps? this reminds me to LOTRO: everyone knows how terrible the pvp is.
the pvp in the new star wars game should be the same pvp like in the old star wars game. pvp with an flag system and without restrictions. this was fun!
I am sure this is not the only type of PVP you will find in SWTOR. Game is far from release. Also game is going to have PVP servers so that will take care of 24 hrs PVP for anyone who likes it.

yes they really want pvp in small separated areas. i bet it will be like unreal tournament lol. by the way: the whole game is base on instances.

How many times do they as well as forum users have to say, the 8v8 first of all, is not set in stone, second is not the only form of PVP available, as an example world PVP is confirmed.
I like the idea of pvp advancement as a means to break up the pace of story-line leveling.

I understand sometimes information is hard to come by, but come on people. when the information is linked in the same thread, TWICE, thats getting irriating, really, read the thread, it doesn't take that long before you come across my post which flat out states they have OPEN WORLD PVP (yes thats shouting, get the point across).

Good, tuck it away on a few planets so I don't have to deal with baby junior son of a B and their tirade of "PwN U" emotes. Now I have more interest in the game!
