This game should win the "Most over hyped game of the year" award.
Its the most uninspired generic on rail quest grinder I've ever seen.
It's amazing that people are willing to kiss that old dog just because it put some lipstick on.
All I can't say is that Trion did a damn good job with the marketing of this turd.
Or maybe I'm the one expecting too much from a new MMO?
The thing is, I don't see how I can lower my expectation more than I already did... sigh.
Definetly agree. The only thing I hope for is a decent PvP system, but I am not holding my breathe. We will see come this next beta phase how the pvp is.
My guess is they will attempt to copy Warhammer Online and fail worse than Warhammer did at attempting to copy Dark age of camelot.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
I really enjoyed my time playing Rift. It was a fun game for me. I joined a guild, made some new friends, and I intend to play it at release.
I thought that the world was interesting and engaging, both in terms of lore and graphics.I liked the rifts and chasing invasions, and I thought the questing wasn't too annoying. The rifts aren't the most interesting part-- the class ("soul") system is. I liked being able to build my characters in different ways. I played a Reaver/Warlord, a Blade Dancer/Ranger, and a Shaman/Druid, and I only wished that I'd had more time to try other combinations during the beta weekends.
I will agree 100% with the previous posters who said the game has been WAY overhyped. As a future player who really wants to see the game do well, I see so much potential backlash from people who were expecting more than the game actually delivers (which it really does deliver well). If they want to market this game, they need to lower expectations a little... And maybe make fire squirrels their mascot.
Anyone that had put a little time into reading or viewing dev video would have known that this game would be a traditional MMO with a twist. Most did not do their homework and went bats when they heard the words Nex-Gen. I guess everyone just wants a GW2 copy. They are doing dynamic content, just not in the same way that GW2 will do it.
If you were online during the massive events Trion held, you would realize what is happening at that moment is what they meant by nex-gen. That those servers could stand up to 500 people onscreen in one spot while 100's of mobs were spawned in is Trions little trick in a bag.
Stop a minute and think about what this means for pre-scripted events thrown into the system, not to mention world pvp. Think a little more and then more. Are you all getting it?
Now that does not mean that people will like the game, but it is definately why Scott is practically giddy on that Rift podcast. He knows what his team just accomplished. The game still needs work and it may never be a GW2, but they have other things in their bag for the future. I believe this game is a stepping stone. They have their server architecture, now we need to see what else is possible.
This site sorely need a reviewer with a genuine interest in PvP. I dont know how many reviews/previews I have read where there is little to no mention of PvP.

Exactly you could only paly one sid ein each event and whislt the PvP vendors and quests were in palce for the starting areas there was no one to fight against.Cant' preview what wasn't shown.

True but mentioning that there was no PvP possible says alot, to me anyway.

You may be right but if you did some reading you'd of foudn out the first two beta events were for stress testing the starter areas of both factions and levels 1-20 content of said factions...plus stress testing the rift system.PvP was never gonan be the focus of those two events but probably will be in the future.

Possible, but if you look at the events it seems more like they were trying to get an idea for stress testing the areas as well as tuning the rifts.
The rifts did undergo dramatic changes. so it seems to me that it makes sense to take it one bit at a time.
if it means anything to you, the servers were pvp, rp pvp, and pve

Well the fact that there will be PvP servers sound promising. However I think I will take a wait and see approach to this game because it seems awfully suspicous of being yet another WoW clone. Linear, casual with high levels focusing on grinding for gear.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

You just named 90% of the MMOs in the last 5+ yrs, and when there is something new it gets shot down for not being like (insert game), people dont know what they want and they complain if its not how they think it should be, anyway i like Rifts and will play for lanuch in hopes that they get the parts that other games like WoW, WAR, EQ2 didnt get right

Look if I was going to give you my honest opinion I would say the questing is exremely linear and leads you from one place to another, the mechanics are smiliar to other games where you shut down generators only to have them revive so others can do the same, it is definitely within the same family as wow, lotro,AoC perhaps, etc.
People are saying the game world is linear. Not true. Aion has a linear feeling world. Not this. Some of said it's like Vanguard. I don't believe this to be true from what I've seen. It's open but comparing to Vanguard it might be a bit more confined with regards to some landscape features. But never did I feel confined and moving down a path with the exception of the starter area and that is more of a teaching area and an introduction to the world.
If you play this game and if you are the type of person who uses the term "wow clone" I can pretty much guarantee that you will think this game is a wow clone. For better or worse. I would say "same family" but perhaps that's just splitting hairs.
The saving grace is that i do think it's possible to level withtout the quests and once the pvp is added one might be able to carve their own way.
But that remains to be seen.

I liked the game for all of the reasons he stated above. I do not have the patience to craft so that is not an issue to me.
I will disagree on the Rift rewards. In beta two, I was able to get a 'wicked' two handed hammer (blue) by using the rift tokens at level 17. I never even went out Rift hunting, like many did. I simply participated in the invasions as they sprung up while I was questing. Every so ofen, if I heard the trumpet call and I was near, I would go and assist when the towns or hubs were being attacked.
He says it himself in his article that he avoided them. I say, do not avoid them and the tokens add up over time (not too quickly, as to give the reward some actual meaning). Bravo on the rest of the article though.
What about the extremely small and linear world? Its design rivals that of Warhammer. No reason or even desire to explore the lifeless world of Telera. Atleast with EQ2 , LoTRO and WoW there is a large world to explore and things to see. There is none of that in Rift.
Or how about the terrible performance of the game? Myself and many others were stuck at 15-20fps no matter the settings used even on beastly rigs.
Its Warhammer all over again.
The only thing I took away from the game ( outside of knowing not to buy it ) is that the particle effects are pretty good.
Biggest problem is that combat and skills need a lot of work. Several souls you mash 122122 at level 1 and you do the same at level 20. By 20 half the skills are unlocked incidentally. To say some are lacklustre is being generous. It needs quite a lot of work on this core gameplay to make it truly satisfying.
(4) Graphics, well being a hard core eq2 person I was disappointed with graphics, I was expecting more. the graphics kind of reminded me of wow....
Really, WOW? Are you playing the game maxed or some different game?? It looks absolutely nothing like WOW. Wow is a cartoon desingned game, the designs in RIFT are way closer to the look and feel of Warhammer if anything garphic-wise...
Played both beta events and I was extremely dissappointed. The graphics in one aspect are good looking. The character models are kind of cool. The terrain is plain out horrible. You climb up any hill and its totally barren in some spots.
This game is nothing like EQ or Vanguard for those who said it would be. It is exactly like WAR married Aion, which for some is fine. Its not a bad game by any means but it is extreme themepark to the "T". You have no choices where to go, but are simply told via quests where to go. There is no "other" starting areas or questing areas you can do from 1-20. You must do the same thing over and over again. Crafting is one click wonder stuff much like WAR or WoW.
This is one of those games I would maybe buy and play once character through max. There is zero replayability in my book and the game is very shallow. I do agree that the Rifts get old and boring real quick. Its the same thing over and over and over.

Lol exacly my point, as in there not much different other than the shader and the color they used. I found it way to cartoon like. I do agree with you i fetl some warhammer in some areas like silverwhatever place the school.
The way this game was hyped was it was going to replace eq2, eq1, vangaurd. Vangaurd playres maybee. EQ1 folks I would bet are not even going to give it a thought. I like others reported major problems with the fps of the game the max I ever got was like 26 and I tried all kinds of settings. Running a gtx295 with 1 gig on card and 8 gig on motherboard. I don't know something about the graphics engine needs tons of work.

Well considering that the reviewer thought that WoW set the bar high for MMORPGs it does make sense that he thinks that the game have the "it" factor.

I think a lot of us are looking for an alternative to EQ/Vanguard/WAR/LOTRO, and in that sense i think RIFT on the whole delivers.
It definately feels like an old school MMO, which is no bad thing imo.
