Thats not how the world works and thats not how good rpg worlds work, good rpg worlds have you doing quests.

Having different point of views is acceptable but lying is never justified. D&D and most of RPGs were not "Quest Driven". Some had one major "Quest" which is the Goal of the Game. Take Eye of the Beholder for isntance, you are trapped in the underdepth and your "Quest" is to survive/solve the task the King asked you to in the dungeon. You simple ventured in the dungeon, level after level. Free to roam, free to talk to the inhabitant. Free to do anything you want. Yes, your goal is to solve the quest you were given but it wasnt "Go kill 10 ra,ts go get me a glass of water, then go rub my feet, then go do these 10 quests in that area at the same time." That was never the case, if you are trying to convince us that old RPG and D&D paper and pencil were Quest driven then you are lying.

I'm kind of fade up with that type of atitude "we old timer are bored because mmo are all about hand holding", because first you guys have nothing old at all, this is just bs so to make you feel important and as if you are right, but its clear you aren't, if you actually played the first gen of mmo you would know it, since Uo have exactly the opposite mind set you claim to be the "old" one.

Second the thing you want were already designed for you  with the 3d generation of mmo with L2 that aimed exactly for the kind of people you are, or you are claiming you are. The tuff guy who like empty world where they have to do it all the hard way. Go play Lineage2 right, that game was designed for you, a hell of a grind where you need year to get out of noob status, a super harsh economy/craft system where any weapon cost the skin of your ass to the point it became a RMt heaven, a play to win pvp where you need to spend all you fucking time to be able kick other people ass with a win buton, quest where you have to run during hours all around the map to get your next stage, boss that need 400 poepl to be taken down.... So please guys go there and stay there, and stop telling us this kind of crap, because we all know it failed damn hard.

You also have Darkfall which is the modern version of it, you'll need years to actually be able to even control your character properly, and to be valid in pvp, uber grind... excatly the same mindset. So you have those games for you already, go there. Now don't complain those game are just bad, right, because may be thats your attitude that isn't very good either.

They are  lot of ways to make something difficult, and having a super stupid grind so you have to play for year to acheive anything, forcing grouping and give them electrochoc if they messed up for a second, difficult and clunchy controls/conbat system, time to win pvp, all this is just a big fail, if you can't understand this is not making game harder but stupidier then let it be.

In fact its exactly because those things failed hard that the mmo genre is stuck into that dead end, and is now trying to repeat itself trying to make as less wave as it can.

I just wanted to make it perfectly CLEAR that not everyone that is "old guard" or "old school," is giving up on the genre OR wishing it was like back in the "olden days."  I want it to PROGRESS and MOVE FORWARD.  Stagnation is boring and stagnant people are boring and get bored easily.  That's just how it is.

So, "New Generation"......I say "BRING IT ON!"

You remind me of what Goerge Carlin (RIP) said and the analogy fits you here very well.

"Did you know that?  That's all we have.  That's all we have here folks.  Mile after mile of mall after mall; many, many malls.  Major malls and mini-malls.  They put the mini-malls.  They pu the mini-malls in between the major malls.  And in between the mini-malls they put the mini-marts.  And in between the mini-malls they put the mini-marts.  And in the between the mini-marts they pu the car lots, gas stations, muffler shops, laundry mats, cheap hotels, fast-food joints, strip clubs, and dirty bookstores.

America the Beautiful.  One big transcontinental commercial cesspool.  And how do the people feel about all of this?  How do the people feel about living in a bicoastal shopping mall?

Well, they think it's JUST FUCKING DANDY!"

Like you said just because you are older doesn't mean you have the perception or standards that we have. Age means nothing, I know younger people who cannot accept shallow game play. I know older people who play a shallow game and they think it's "JUST FUCKING DANDY!".

I am all for "Next Generation" but if you've seen all the developed who claimed their games is "Next Generation" you'd be surprised. The recent one which is under Closed Beta (is advertised as such) and it's nothing but a compelte clone of World of Warcraft. You like that, dont you? Quest Driven, hand holding, Shallow game play, same artificial itemization system, GPS maps pointing you towards where they want you to go, complete linearity. Good for you, I'm glad you're having fun because there are too many of those games that you enjoy so much.

Rift is a bland "same ol' same ol'."  It is a passable game.  It brings nothing "new" to the table.  I'm assuming you're referring to Rift.  The game is not for me, but I'm sure some will like it.  Do I?  No, I didn't particularly care for it, but I can't judge what someone else might like, and obviously.....neither can you. lol

But for us, (who is this "us" you speak of...I think you can only really speak for yourself) in the other hand, we demand depth. We dont want the old games to come back again. But we want a better direction to MMORPG genre. A different genre actually. This problem is not new, it is not a problem to MMORPGs only. Even in RPGs we had the "Action" RPG (Diablo) and the "Classic" RPG (Baldur's Gate). So, some people like fast paces with no RPG element whatsoever (Except for.... leveling.. and since when that's considered RPG??). Others just like the other kind of "RPGs" you know those who get the option to actually god damn role play a little?

Funny you should type the above paragraph with such an accusatory tone when I AM a role player and have MANY times on these boards talked about the lack of RPG in today's MMORPGs. You feign familiarity with me, when obviously you don't know anything about me. Why is that?  To make your points?  I also play a variety of genres, not just MMOs, but you didn't know that either.

Also, don't delude yourself with this "Stagnation". The real stagnation is the standardized Quest-Driven crap developers are throwing at us. Different theme, same shit again and again.I am with developement and progress. That is EXACTLY why I hate the MMORPG direction. If you think copying the same Quest Driven system over and over again is progress, then guess who's with "stagnation"? I'm deluding myself? ROFL  Where did I say I LIKED the status quo?  I think you must have me confused with someone else. I HATE quest hubs and linearity. I have to wonder where you got all this "knowledge" about what I like and don't like?

Stop deluding yourself. The MMORPG genre is on a hold. There's no progress whatsoever. This is NOTHING but your opinion, as you have played NONE of the games that are coming out in the next five years. You are guessing, period. So who is delusional?  I'm just staying open-minded.

I am not quitting though. Because my hopes are high with Studio 38 and CCP new MMORPG "World of Darkness". They will break the stupid mold that you enjoy so much. According to R. A. Salvatore who is working in Studio 38 he said something like "The last thing you want to do is holding people's hand". Also, CCP known for being creative with their titles (EVE Online). In the mean while enjoy the hundreds of "next generation" titles.

Actually for such a long post about MY views on the genre, you got surprisingly little correct.  How you read all of that into my previous post, I have no idea.

For your information, NO, I do not like shallow crap games. And how you think you can determine that there is nothing new and no progress by judging games that have not even been released yet, I don't know, but from how you judged my personality, likes, and dislikes, I can say one thing for certain.....you're no psychic.

Unlike you, I do believe the genre will see some new things and they WON'T all be crap.  But if you feel better by making sure you're not disappointed via maintaining a constant state of negativity.....more power to ya.  I would prefer to have disappointments and then move on as opposed to being negative about everything just to prevent disappointment.  Disappointment is part of life.  Learn to embrace it and then hold out hope for something else.  It's much healthier mentally.
