I haven't played the game, but I've read enough reviews and comments from people.
I just read Bill's take on people being surprised after the NDA lift.

We knew how similar Rift will paly similar to WoW.
I think these reactions are because we've seen what Guild Wars 2 is providing: Innovation.
Right from the start GW2 talked about the things ArenaNet talked about things we're sick of in MMOs: Grind, Wall of Text, no RPG, loot steal, LFG problems, have to team up with a jerk because he's the job we need, the fighting style, static world... etc etc.
So I think maybe we (including myself) were thinking that Rift will deliever a new experience.
And we have not played GW2 BUT WE'VE SEEN ENOUGH!

Yeah I feel the same way. Rift just looks like another "Stripped down WoW + 1" game. It takes a stripped down version of the WoW formula, adds 1 or 2 features (rifts) and then proceeds to release and fail.
You can see this phenomenon with several other games:
AoC (stripped down WoW + combo based combat)
WAR (stripped down WoW + more PvP)
Aion (stripped down WoW + flying)
All of these games fail for a reason. WoW is great at what it does, a stripped down WoW + 1 game is never go to be preferable to the real deal. Just like the OP said we need innovation or something different. More of the same is just a waste.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
I think a lot of people, especially on this forum, just want something different. From what I gathered Rift is pretty much more of the same with a twist (the Rifts).
The one design decision that has some complaints, which are valid imo, is that the game should have been designed with rifts as the core of the game. People have said it is a questing game with rifts as a side event, it should be the other way around.
So, you haven't actually played either game, correct?
You haven't seen what Guild Wars 2 will be providing, you have read about it. And formed an opinion in your head of what it will be like. Won't you be discouraged when the actual game does not match your expectation?
How can you possibly have seen enough, you haven't SEEN anything yet!?
The games that only exist in your head are always perfect are they not???
I expected RIFT to be familiar, to have a few MMO tropes to deal with of course.
I didn't expect it to be a copy. It's even more so than AoC or LotRO could even hope to be. From the class skills to a dumber AI to a more liner progression. It's like old WoW if the developers of WoW decided to not innovate within their own game. When people say "It's not like WoW, it's different." They sort of got a very assed point. It's like WoW without using the fixes on the monotony that WoW learned over the years. It's too easy to be like Vanilla WoW, but it's not dynamic enough to be compared to post BC... So yeah it's different in that regard.
I have no hope for GW2 now honestly. FFXIV was bad and RIFT didn't even fail on at least trying to do something new.
The genre isn't dead, it's just bloated.
"How can you possibly have seen enough, you haven't SEEN anything yet!?"
The amount of game play AreanaNet has shown, Trion has not.
And from what I've seen, I KNOW GW2 is not a WoW clone to say the least.
I've also seen the ranger in combat if not other three as close, and I'll tell you this: i've never seen this type of combat before and I loved it.
We also caught good amount of story glimpse so therefor I know GW2 will deliever an amazing story atleast even IF it's MMO aspect sucks (which also we've seen from videos that it does not).
Now let's talk about Trion's Rift. Where have they shown awsome story to complement RPG in Rift?
All I've seen are few Difiant Trailers, the length were maybe 3 minutes combined.
They haven't shown it because THEY DON'T GOT IT!!!
I've seen a lot of threads how Rift is SIMILAR (clone) to WoW
Show me one thread that GW2 is similar (clone) to WoW!!!!
Bottom line is: Rift is not delievering what we want, BUT we can GW2 on the other will be a little innovative IF not TOTALLY.

Did world of warcraft steal ideas from another game?
Take it easy bro...try not to get too hyped up over a game that is a year away from release. Get excited but temper it until you at least get a chance to play it.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Nope. Totally 100% unique, which is why it appears to be the standard modern mmo's are compared to now.
Now hear we go. A lot of people that were on the RIFT bandwagon are now jumping off because of a false built up expectation. The same thing will happen with GW2 and it's dynamic events. Are they really any different than RIFTS events, i don't think so.
You're still going to be running around in the same old fantasy setting doing the same stuff that the first GW had plus zerging into a event that will only affect the playing world for a short time.
With saying this, does that mean GW2 will feel the same as RIFT, who knows since no one has been able to play it. I guess time will tell if GW2 will be more of the same or be some what better than RIFT.
Even though RIFT feels like other games, the biggest problem it has is that it didn't set itself apart from the others. So the game feels no better or worse, just has a been there done that type of vibe.
I know, sorry
But... just... can... not... wait... for... this... game...

I guess it comes down to expectations really, I haven't been paying much attention to either Rift or GW2.
Rift has only just come onto my radar in the last few weeks, from the little I've seen and heard I'm quite interested, I'm not expecting anything drastically different from current MMO's, but it would be nice to find a replacement game for EQ2, thats how I found out about it actually, from a lot of unhappy EQ2 players who seemed to hold this game up as some sort of saviour for those who like EQ2 but are sick of SOE and their rip off Station Cash store.
As for GW2, I'm not sure what the crack is with that game, everytime I seem to read a thread on here it feels like people are just jumping in basically saying 'game x' isn't going to be as good as GW2. For me this is very puzzling as I personally found GW1 to be amongst the worst MMO's I've played, I wouldn't even call it an MMO given the way the game worked and the fact that you only actually played with your group outside of the towns. For that reason alone I've hardly read anything about the game, and if it has the same system in place (I.E. not really an MMO) then I won't be touching GW2.
Back to Rift though, I hope it isn't a 'clone' of WoW, if it is just a case of the game sticking with tried and tested things then thats fine by me, as long as it is polished at launch, has plenty of content, fun to play and isn't highly instanced then I'll be happy.
"The same thing will happen with GW2 and it's dynamic events. Are they really any different than RIFTS events, i don't think so."
I think they're worlds a part. There was a thread about this, comparing their dynamic events. I couldn't find it, if someone does please post a link.
But, every dynamic event in GW2 has it's own unique sotry, rifts don't. DE will lead into something else upon loos or won, rifts don't.
Yes we go running around killing X of Y even in DE, but we get to see imidiate effects of our hard work, in rifts we don't.

I beg to disagree. Don't forget the predecessors of WoW. Everquest, ultima online to name a few. These games all borrowed ideas from somewhere. Every game is a burrowed idea from another. I don't believe anything is unique in the gaming industry. Prove that WoW is unique to everyone. What did WoW do that is unique to what Everquest did or Ultima Online..? Or any other old game for that matter.
I think what happened is; one game takes one or more ideas from another and tries to evolve the idea into something better.. In the end, it still has the root strands from the old.. So, it's not unique just looks different.. but in essense it's still the same.
Btw, I am aware that WoW is more popular then any other released MMO to this date. But that doesn't make it necessarily better imo. Of course this is only my opinion...
I was mildly interested in Rift. I did sort of like it, played quite well for me. I'm just sick of quest based games. I was hoping they would have done more with the game. I kind of figured it was going to be more of the same with a few twists. The classes are interesting, but didn't really like the way they're handled in the soul specialization.
I do like the rifts, but as mentioned before, it seems they are more of an afterthought, than a core mechanic.
I know some people are really excited about GW2, but the more I hear of it, the less I want to play. It also seems like more of the same old crap too with a few twists. Same goes for swtor. Probably won't bother with any of them. The way things are going, it might be a long while before I find some fun non quest based progression game.
I don't mind games that have similar game play, they just seem so uninspired, like they're tossed out there for people who are searching for something, anything to play because it is new and different.
I agree, GW1 was a complete let down and a waste of money for me. Arena has alot to prove in my eye's before I even consider buying GW2.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
you should probably start reading up on gw2 then because it promises to have a full persistent world this time round
I think that is exactly what I expected. When I think of Rifts: Planes of Telera I think of you being able to go to many different planes on Telera and exploring the worlds(Maybe you can and I just didn't see it) I figured you'd choose a starting plane, maybe we would of had "elemental type races/hybrids" and forge your story by being a soulmaster blah blah blah. Instead basically the exact opposite of what I was expecting. (Mind you I stopped following to be released games that closely so maybe I was the only one totally shocked)
Nope. Totally 100% unique, which is why it appears to be the standard modern mmo's are compared to now.
Er, you were being sarcastic right because you do know WOW is almost entirely made using ideas borrowed from other games.
But we're talking Rift here.
Sounds like Rift is a well made version of what most MMOR PG's are post WOW, which will no doubt provide many hours of enjoyment for folks not looking for something really different.
In all fairness I'm not seeing any of the major titles coming out being too different, GW2 being the lone exception.
(And in my mind, while GW1 was different, it certainly wasn't necesarrily better, or rather, not what I was looking for.)

Same here. I follow news on GW2 but ArenaNet has to prove me they can do more than that boring snorefest.
Agreed. For all we know GW2 could turn out to be a pile of crap. Video's and developer interviews are all well and good but there is a huge difference when you actually play the game.
Agree
Do it different like Darkfall or EvE............................
Same old....tab123 = mob dead... can we please move along ffs.. Can you devs stop trying to make WoW 2.0!!??
Problem is that Rift is not similar to WoW at all, it is similar to Warhammer.
Suffice to say that half way through Beta 2 I went back to play Cataclysm.
WoW is way better than this boring questfest.
Well some people said it plays like Everquest 1 and now some are saying its more like WoW so whats the truth?
[object Window]
GW 2 right now is so overhyped and will be a let down for many people. Yes, they are doing some things different but too much false decisions in my mind.

removing healers - > never a good idea ->instant loss of those who like being pure healrs
every level same xp curve ->just stupid beyond god. Max level should mean something. I know in most games it doesn[object Window]t nowadays because they are a ***** walk in the park.
cutscenes -> I am sure they will overuse them so the game become more like a movie than a game.
