It depends on what you do. If you listen to everyone else cry about the quest grind and they hold your hand blah blah blah. You will see only the WoW side. If you decide to forgoe the quest grind and actually explore around you can run much akin to EQ1. My wife and I did in beta 2, we didnt do a single quest after the starting zone just ran around and explored and found alot of things to do. The xp for killing mobs is not bad at all, we found treasure chests you can loot laying in caves and some ruins as well as a weapons rack that was lootable. We found Named mobs that wandered around that dropped loot. And we leveld very well doing it, we also managed to stay decently geared between rift rewards and planar vendors and drops from mobs as well as the occasional visit to the AH to see what the crafters have put up we did pretty damn good and not a single quest.
So its not Trion holding your hand its you holding theirs because they offered it. You do not have to stick to the quest grind at all. You have rifts, invasion events, mob killing, treasures to find, crafters and instances to keep you geared and leveld if you want. You could also mix it up and do both its completely up to you, but just because the easy rotue is there in form of mass quests doesnt mean you have to take it. there is another way and my wife and I found it and it was a blast.

3. without missing large chunks of features promised on the box
4. in playable condition, not slapped together with promises of a "miracle patch"
5. with a game design that actually keeps the game entertaining for more than 5 hours
Then it's done a better job that most MMOs released in the last three years. On the other side, will that be good enough to grab and hold a large player base? Heck if I know. :-)

For those who have played both CB know that this MMO will have the most stable launch in past 5 years. It has very few bugs and it runs great even one average computers. Currently the systems that have problem are with ATI cards (but then everything runs great on Nvidia) and they are working on it. Servers are stable and don't crash, and engine is optimized to hold 500 players on screen with 100 of mobs spawned everywhere (last day GM event).
Also content is not a problem. It is going to release with end game dungeons as well as lower level dungeons, something recent MMOS were missing at release. Overall a very stable and polished MMO.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Heh, I still don't get it. I understand people are familar with World of Warcraft and all. But why do people keep saying this game is just another clone. Lets put it this way, what RIFT has most other games also have. Questing, the grind, instances, crafting and the like. All these things are what make up almost any mmo you see now, and will see in the future. Every game is going to try to bring something new. It's not a clone, it's called the traditional RPG model for mmorpg's. World of Warcraft didn't make this model, they just refined it. And it's really not a bad thing. This is how mmorpgs are going to continue to be created and played, its a model that works. People looking for dynamic's are going to be hurt. While the technology is there, it's just not feasible in an online environment. Well it is, but your talking about having servers capped at the bare minimum. I'm talking at most probably like 100 people per server for it to work right and run right while allowing even the most aged computers to run the game. Thats the thing right there also. People like us are what hold games back from being really dynamic. And no game company or investor would put 300 million into a game just to watch 100 people play it.
People need to quit being couch developers and start being consumers and realize that it's going to take a long time before you see the standerd model change. SWTOR, RIFT, GW2 and any other game isn't going to change it. You won't see a drastic change for quite sometime. Like I stated, the tech is there, we just aren't. Not everyone has 3 grand to drop on a top of the line computer. And developers don't have one global system they design for like consoles do. You want innovation, your 360 or PS3 is it. I know it's hard to swallow, but once you get past that, maybe you can start to enjoy what you have. And if what you have is not good enough for you, then maybe its time to move on. I enjoy RIFT very much so, not because it's a clone but because the world has some life in it. It may not be the most dynamic game, but it does things right by giving me the standerd model plus some and offering me some dynamic events on top of it. I also enjoy the storyline and what it has to offer. Cheers and Merry Xmas!!!

this may come as a suprise, but i am very pleasantly supried that they didnt go for a horrid vg/eq2 crafting system but the current one instead. So yes there are some of us whop like the brainless stuff.
This every game has done it before argument drives me batty.
There are broad things that define a genre. If everyone in the genre does it...it makes sense because it is part of the genre.
If the mechanics are nearly identical to one game and one game only...that is copying.
Again..take crafting. EQ2 is different than FFXIV is differen than WoW is different than X game.
If you pick up a new game and it is 95% the same as only one game in the genre..it's not taking what works and improving it.
Lets try an analogy. Lets say you read a book about sparkly vampires. That would place it in a broad genre of vampire books. It will have similarities to other vampire books that came before it. Now if you read a book about vampires by another author, and those vampires are sparkly and emo...well that's just a sequel and/or rip off.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
I haven't played the game, but I've read enough reviews and comments from people.
And we have not played GW2 BUT WE'VE SEEN ENOUGH!
So, you haven't actually played either game, correct?
You haven't seen what Guild Wars 2 will be providing, you have read about it. And formed an opinion in your head of what it will be like. Won't you be discouraged when the actual game does not match your expectation?
How can you possibly have seen enough, you haven't SEEN anything yet!?
The games that only exist in your head are always perfect are they not???
"How can you possibly have seen enough, you haven't SEEN anything yet!?"
The amount of game play AreanaNet has shown, Trion has not.
And from what I've seen, I KNOW GW2 is not a WoW clone to say the least.
I've also seen the ranger in combat if not other three as close, and I'll tell you this: i've never seen this type of combat before and I loved it.
We also caught good amount of story glimpse so therefor I know GW2 will deliever an amazing story atleast even IF it's MMO aspect sucks (which also we've seen from videos that it does not).
Now let's talk about Trion's Rift. Where have they shown awsome story to complement RPG in Rift?
All I've seen are few Difiant Trailers, the length were maybe 3 minutes combined.
They haven't shown it because THEY DON'T GOT IT!!!
I've seen a lot of threads how Rift is SIMILAR (clone) to WoW
Show me one thread that GW2 is similar (clone) to WoW!!!!
Bottom line is: Rift is not delievering what we want, BUT we can GW2 on the other will be a little innovative IF not TOTALLY.
You are hoping GW2 is everything you want it to be, after seeing a few cutscenes...
I think Rift is a decent game. If they dropped their self-proclaimed "next gen" marketing people wouldn't have anything to complain about.
I think their marketing campain should be "WoW rip-off, done right!"
Agreed. Rift is a pretty nice game but the fact that they use the wording "next gen kinda sticks in my eyes. The only next gen about it is that they have added scaling to WARs PQs.
But I dunno if I like your motto, Wow in itself is a rip off from EQ which itself is a rip off from Meridian 59. MMO games are together with FPS games the genre that steals most from earlier games.
And I can't see why people thought Rift would be different, even if they lied about next gen it was clear that it was the traditional choice of 2011 while TOR and TERA are somewhat different and GW2 (and possibly WoDO if it by a miracle releases Q4) are a lot different from the usual games.
Being different isn't always better and I look forward to see which game will be the best of 2011.
You are hoping GW2 is everything you want it to be, after seeing a few cutscenes...
I hope you are not disappointed.
I have played GW 1 for years so I know what ANET delivers. Solid fun gameplay and their own way of doing this.
Rift deliver a regular MMO with few classes but a lot of specializations and while it is pretty fun we seen it all before.
Many people here have tried GW2 half an hour and that is more than a few cut scenes even if it is a lot less than they tried Rift.
Stioll, while Trion have a few really good devs they are not in the same class as Arenanet, the resume of the people working there is amazing.
And Trions founder and top developer quit 1 1/2 years ago (He is however great, I still consider Heroes of might and magic as one of the top games ever). Bad news to loose someone like him but hopefully he did what he should before quitting.
So, no. Trion still have more experienced people than most MMO companies but Arenanet have many people from best selling games like Starcraft, Diablo 1 & 2, Warcraft 3 and more. And they have a game engine written by Jeff Strain (Lead designer on Diablo and Starcraft 3, the guy who made battle.net). You just can't compete with that.
Being a old school mmo player I think Trion had players like me in mind when developing Rifts. That is old school mmo players that are all grown up now and don't have the schedule to devulge into 12 hour binges when playing mmos. But I think a lot of old school EQ lovers thought they were talking about them. Now, those ex-EQ players feel cheapened after getting a taste of what Rifts really had to offer: A different take on the art direction that WoW took but not really a different take on the gameplay mantra.
Like someone stated earlier with the +1 examples, I think Rifts is: WoW + better graphics. Also you guys that are still trying to convince people that WoW didn't come first, yes we understand that but WoW set a new benchmark in the genre like:
Micheal Jordon wasn't the first basketball player
Darth Maul wasn't the first sith apprentice in a Star Wars movie
The 66' Ford Mustang wasn't the first Ford Mustang
Walter Payton wasn't the first wide receiver
Coca Cola wasn't the first soda pop
By now I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from with this. Either way it goes I'll be trying out Rifts for myself like I always do with every mmo eventually and I will play until I find something else that hits a higher watermark for me.

I hope u guys know that WoW is "Everquest + more pvp"
The guys who "made up" WoW where actually very active Guildmasters from Everquest.
And warcraft is actually a childish version of warhammer. Blizzard got the permission to use some of the stuff from the warhammer world by Games Workshop. and some of the ppl who founded Blizzard is from Games Workshop.
i am not talking about warhammer online which totally blows, yet im still a Warhammer fan, but thats because of the tabletop miniature game which is just pure awsome.
New way of delivering class choice that will change the way Holy Trinity games do characters going forward.
Interesting dungeons.
Questing and encounters that allow for completion in shorter time for the "older" gamers with obligations that still want to have a fun RPG time but don't have the time in the day to invest in sprawling 5 hour sessions.
PvP from videos I have seen should be more immersive than WoW since there will be more types of PvP mixes and PvE elements will pay more of a roll.
The game looks like it will expand as you level in large ways similar to Everquest and WoW did. The reason I believe this is due to the world pics and lore shown from areas that have not been in the beta presentations so far.
There is alot behind the scenes that we haven't seen yet as far as the content past 20th level.
In WoW at level 20 we had barely started to experiance dungeons and just started to encounter locations with contested territory. The loots were not impressive but gave you the impressions of getting more powerful. There were very few set armors at this level ...one of them being the defiant set. There were a few drops off boss mobs in dungeons at this level that were extra nice and made for great upgrades to your common gears up to this point. All this was done with easy interface, strait forward questing that could be taken in keep heaps or in small doses. The exposure to more complex game mechanics was at a great pace for people that were new to the MMORPG market and it made it easy to introduce to non-players.
If rifts is promising this same experiance as WoW with easy to get into game and super familiar questing and GUI and a similar experiance in the level 1 thru 20, with all the new things listed in the first section plus the rift system......OMG sounds like a great game that many mmorpg fans will want to play and play often.

I'm and 'oldschool' player and whilst I expected nothing from Rift, I don't need 12 hours free a day to appreciate a game with a bit more freedom, a bit less linearity and a lot more sandbox than is the current norm nowadays. The funny thing is I can well imagine that alot of non oldschool players who started with WoW and the likes are also on the look out for something a bit different tot he current themepark norm.
WoW certainly did set a new benchmark in the genre, but many will find it questionable as to whether it had a positive impact.
Oh and the new Ford Mondeo is technically a 'better' car than that old 66' Mustang you mentioned, it has also sold a hell of a lot more units than that Mustang. That is a far closer WoW analogy then the one you mentioned and it shows why the debate is not quite so clear cut as you seem to think.
Regardless, I personally can't see why anyone expected anything different from Rift, nothing in the lead up to this point has really pointed to it being a stand out, innovative game in all honesty so I'm not quite sure why people were expecting as such.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Did world of warcraft steal ideas from another game?
Nope. Totally 100% unique, which is why it appears to be the standard modern mmo's are compared to now.
Um, no. Maybe WoW was the first MMO you played and thats why you feel that way. But for those of us that where already 4 years vested in MMO's when wow came out we can all agree WoW was Far from 100% unique. Now 100% no skill needed to play ... you would be correct.
Please don't try to tell me skill was needed to play wow. I Played EQ for 5 Years before i played wow.. i purchased the game and got 3 months game time with it. At the end of the first month i had a max level Hunter .. The end of the second i had a max level Rogue and the end of the 3rd a max lvl Warlock. 3 months + 3 max toon's = no skill kids game.
I have absolutely no problem with Rift being similar to WoW, because after all, pretty much every MMORPG released after the year 2004 is similar in some way to WoW.
The problem I have with Rift is that it doesn't do anything better than any other game that came before it. I like armor graphics, but that's about it.
If you buy a car, why are you ridicolous about the new car having 4 Wheels, a steering wheel? Oh, its only the difference in a little other design, and its not automatic gearbox, but a manual. Yeah, its still a car. WOW, why, they said it is a new car, but it is like the old car... yeah, if you have no idea about what you talk, you dont have the feeling about difference and what matters more what you could like more.
So you were hyped in the wave and now you are unhappy, good. it is your mistake? NO, the game should have 2 wheels and should fly while under the earth. Just joking ^.^
What you dont get is, that the "Rifts" are not only a spawning point for monsters. It is a part of a dynamic system which can
1. spawn monsters dynamicly in the world
2. transform the world, not only the textures, but formations too (unclear if it can do more, cause i havent seen more)
3. planing and doing invasions as a third computer controlled fraction
4. perhaps there are things we dont know
Of Course if you dont like it, that wont change anything to you. But you dont complaining about a game you dont like, cause you would just leave it, you are complaining because you think they traided you, the hype got you, and now you are so unhappy. I can say you will hate GW2 and SWTOR, because you dont look what features there are, you are just dreaming, and the awakening is truely bad

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible

Good.
Very Good.
We all needed a MMO to Launch the way they are supposed to.

Clicky for Rift trial
You are hoping GW2 is everything you want it to be, after seeing a few cutscenes...
I hope you are not disappointed.
after few cut scenes?

Show me where Trion promised to deliver a story competetive to Guild Wars 2?
Again using Guild Wars 2 as a direct comparison because I have not seen an MMO deliver a story of this level.
Also we could include DCUO and SWTOR for story.
Show me where Trion promised that we will not be grinding?
Show me where Trion promised that CURRENT level will be fun and we don't have to aim to cap the levels? (I think they said this somewhere).
Any ways, I've gotten beta key for the 3rd event. I'll probably be playing lots of Rift and I should know the game well enough.

Everything We Know about GW2:

"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
No Rift isnt delivering what YOU want. Dont use WE. I have played beta and i will play at release. Dont believe because you dont like it other people dont.
Walter Payton WAS NOT a Wide Receiver...
O.O
I hope u guys know that WoW is "Everquest + more pvp"
The guys who "made up" WoW where actually very active Guildmasters from Everquest.
And warcraft is actually a childish version of warhammer. Blizzard got the permission to use some of the stuff from the warhammer world by Games Workshop. and some of the ppl who founded Blizzard is from Games Workshop.
i am not talking about warhammer online which totally blows, yet im still a Warhammer fan, but thats because of the tabletop miniature game which is just pure awsome.
Rifts has an original world.
New lore.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
didnt you know? wow = stripped down lineage i & ii, ffxi
