Man this game reminds me of Everquest SO much, I can't wait to get my hands on a beta key.

Gameplay mechanics were also elaborated by the title's lead designer, and one thing that was detailed was the instance system. NCSoft's game will provide a more uninterrupted, persistent world with less instances, but even so, these will still play a very important role in it. “We use a lot less instancing than we have in the past,” Flannum said. “The game is structured much more like other MMOs, with the world consisting almost entirely of fully persistent areas. That being said, we have a number of different ways in which we use instancing.”

“Dungeons, for example, are instanced areas designed for group play. We also use instancing very heavily in the players' personal quest chain to reflect decisions that the player has made on those quests. For example, Logan Thackeray, captain of the Seraph, has an office located in Divinity's Reach; his office is instanced because we need to update his status based on choices the player has made.”

Notice some of the key quotes in that paragraph gw2 fanboi's "instance system", "less instances", "number of different ways in which we use instancing." "We also use instancing very heavily...."

"We also use instancing very heavily in the players' personal quest chain to reflect decisions that the player has made on those quests." thats the personal story only. not the whole world.

I'm pretty sure I did mention it... Oooh where did I mention it again oh RIGHT HERE! Seriously, its not like we don't know how or where its used we're just saying the areas where dynamic events take place and the place where you encounter that dragon (the shatterer) are not instanced.

    This is not a game.

The observant reader would easily notice that those quotes out of context change the meaning of them all together.

    Let’s fix your mistake.

The first quote means that they have a system, but it does not say this system is used on the whole game. It only lets us know the system exists somewhere in the game... in this case it applies to.  "An office located in Divinity's Reach",”personal quest ". That is all that is stated.

Quote two backs this up. If there is less instances then we conclude that there are fewer instances.

    Three. Already covered.

"We also use instancing very heavily in the players' personal quest". This directly says”personal quest" which makes it a null statement about what we are talking about

This is all about reading properly, you have only taken things out of their original context to support your comment.

To elaborate further i will also include the main reason that the Dynamic event system will never work in an Instanced world setting.

Unlike most games the game would makes physical changes that effect the world, if this was instanced then we would see many different outcomes all at the same time. This does not lend well to the system. The point is to be able to see the world change, but with multiple instances, the problem, arises that there would be multiple realities that exist in each of the three worlds. Each instance containing their own making it hard for anyone to keep up with any change.

As for the dragon. Sure it’s strong. But anyone can program something to kill allot of people. Boost its attack output and lower its damage intake, increase its health. Instant bodies. For a dragon to win me over it must be more than just about its strength. It must look the part which this one partially fails at mainly in movement and articulation does it really fail, it must make the attacks look the part, which it does not. It must be strong, which this one is. And finally it must be smart, changing its strategy on the fly to match what is going on (this is really for bonus points since it is hard to do) this one just seems to be the regular, straight line to next kill.

can turn it around too tho, the 2 starter areas in RIFT lvl 1 -10 is a completely seperate place from rest of the game, the tutorial area (which GW2 have as well, if I believe) and as it is now most of the RIFT content is in instances, hope they change that in RIFT tho not entirely certain its a good idea, to turn the RIFTs into a bigger part of the game, can see how it will be a problem in the future if you are doing the boring quests, then aint able to continue due to an invasion took over your quest hub, and as it is now in low levels its almost impossible to move on to another quest hub if it should be impossible to find players to help clear it, as the hubs are connected by NPC from previous camp send you off to the next...

Hmm..... the Rift dragon, despite the fact it run through trees and what not, was actually moving, unlike the GW2 one. :D

Thats exactly what I was thinking - I was sure I went to the rift forum, but my eyes must be failing me xD

On topic: I wasnt really sure if it was a dragon ? Did it like stand up at some point ? I thought it to be very confusing atleast and diddent like the head, really hope they will improve those animations really, otherwise it does indeed seem to hit pretty darn hard.

I think the size of the dragon in the GW2 makes it hard for it to move properly beyond its point. It could fly, but they'd still have to change the terrain around it in order to make that work.

    This is not a game.

not to sound like an ass...but Anet has stated that not all their bosses at like that. It just cause the model is so large that once too many players fight it , the boss retracts heavly animated moves to deal with any lag issues  while the encounter still goes on. It follows the same system as their other large encounters (when more players move in the boss gains different skills such as the broodmother gain a tail-swipe (knock-back) )

I enjoy rift on paper but only when i play it and see how it feels in my hands will i judge   the encounter looked fun, sort of a rehash of old school. Lets just say I am excited for the 28th

I've no interest in Rift, I'm VERY interested in GW2, but I still think you guys should tone down the GW2 discussion in a Rift forum. The post was about the dragon in Rift, and while the mention of GW2 (and other game's) dragons is relevant, going on about whether or not its a seamless world isn't. The people who are interested will figure it out for themselves when they go looking for that info, and if they never get to no worries, I PROMISE YOU Anet will be getting so much publicity nearer to the game's launch it'll be impossible not to know. It'll be like that scene from family guy where the dude is slapping the other guy in the face with a picture of his kid. Just like...chill.

I'm not a mod or anything obviously, but whenever I see GW2'ers bogard a different game's thread I can't help but cringe.

As for the Rift dragon, I happen to think it looks pretty cool. No, it's not the biggest, but so what. I remember the battle with Flemeth in Dragon Age: Origins, the very first time I fought her. Felt incredibly epic, easily one of the most dangerous and intense fights in the entire game, and she really wasn't very big. I think the post was originally in relation to the battle itself, less about the scale of the dragon. It's nice to see there's some challenge there. More games need to incorporate this degree of challenge in specific areas and instances, to force people to work together and work intelligently. I don't want an entire game to be this difficult, but I do like having that sense of danger when I'm ready to go looking for it.

Thank you very much for a very sensible post. I am excited about GW2 but its getting out of hand because GW2 fans are just on every damn forum and every topic blowing their trumphet. I made this topic to discuss RIFT not to compare it to GW2, DARKFALL or any other MMORPG out there. When i said 'most bad ass dragon ever' it is quite obvious i am talking in reference to RIFT only.

But as usual it became a tug of war thanks to GW2 fans.
