Why does everyone sound so surprised? SOE and DCUO have already announced that there will be a cash shop for some cosmetic items. This provides a useful tool to continue to develop litle tiny costumes additions while FUNDING the actual development of further content. You don't NEED to pay for it.
Frankly, with all you gloom and doom types, you would think that this cash shop inclusion would be AWESOME as it makes F2P that much easier to move forward with.
(rolls eyes) WoW has a cash shop... you gunna harp on that too?
WoW does not have a cash shop. They have gotten into micro transactions tho.
A sub based game should not have a cash shop, its f***ing ridiculous.
Lucky for them i find the game so enjoyable to play.
WoW DOES have a cash shop. Please call it what you want, but it is by definition a cash shop. You can buy a mount that works for every toon you create, that works in all modes and skills of transport but underwater. That is an advantage in game for money. When it was implemented mounts cost a bit more than they do now, lots of in game gold savings.
lol
WoW does not have a cash shop.
The amount of times you type it does not make your point more valid. You can buy in game items, mostly cosmetic, 1 game affecting for real money. Sounds an awful lot like a cash shop.
Our wallets or the quality of games. Ultimately, we the consumer will decide.
Luckily for the sane ones among us there is still Anet to show that it can be done differently.
Don't be so easily suckered in.
I'm not. I remember the quality of the way other character models rendered in the town gathering area. I played GW when it was first released. Other toons looked fine in instanced pvp, but other wise they looked pretty awful. The PVE was pretty scant. You can't tell me that there wasn't some corners cut in that game to fit it's pay model. Because there obviously were. I am not challenging the quality of the game experience as that speaks for itself, GW has a huge following. And obviously they added content/ improved features as they produced their xpacs. But the argument regarding Anet's approach has been tossed about the interwebs for years. Nothing wrong with it. Arguing that that approach is going to offer competitive, feature-rich content w/o the same cash flow as it's competitors, is probably a flawed arguement.
Monster - You sir are the perfect example of what is being referenced here.
Sony has admitted no GAME influencing items in the "cash shop". Only cosmetic items. Ok. So that doesn't do anything BUT influence your character looks. This does not change speed, attributes, xp gain, etc.
WHEREAS, addons like this or ANY of the CCG items (like the dual person rocket or the like) which CLEARLY are used IN GAME and have DIRECT influence on a persons ability to play (disagree all you like but moving from point a to point b FASTER than other players because you paid CASH is by it's very definition the idea of a CASH SHOP).
If you care to troll, fine. But stop looking like an A.H.
You pay 60 bucks for a FPS on a console game, you then divvie out what like 5 - 10 bucks for an extra 3 freakin maps? 10 bucks for 4 hrs of extra questlines on a RPG? The industry has allowed us to get to the point where EVERYTHING has microtransactions. What's worse is those games that they've CLEARLY held back content that should have been there ON launch just so they can make that extra 10-15 bucks less than a month later.
MMO's are just the most recent to jump on this bandwagon. Thinking that because you pay monthly server fee's means you should be able to not have to pay for additional content is silly. Be glad they don't make you pay for patches. I'm sure SOMEONE in the future will come out with some dumb idea like that.

You are MISSING the entire point. I don't need to pay gold in game for a mount or whatever of given speed so long as I pay cash to get my flying pegasus (that increases it's flight speed WITH your highest rating). That's what 500+ G for your first mount saved, another 500+ G saved for your even faster mount. ALL cause you gave Blizz extra money. CASH SHOP!
This money could be considered a HIGH leg up to a newcomer who doesn't have a lot of spare gold lying around for Dual Speccing, Epic riding, etc. That would be a HUGE advantage to just pay 25 bucks to save 1KG of grind.

It will all be fluff stuff, they have already said that. People that want to have stuff to spend extra money on can, while those that's don't want to spend extra money don't need too. People were preaching doom and gloom, on the EQ2 forums, when they implemented the cash shop, but in game nobody cared. It didn't matter. It was stuff that you don't need to have. It's funny because people don't think anything about the stuff that you get by preordering or paying extra for collector's editions of games, though it is essentially the same thing.
Real cash shops where you pay for needed stuff it was they are implementing in the supposedly frp games. They give you limited access then you will have to pay cash to get access to somethings that subscribers already have access to.

I agree it will mostly be fluff and most will not care. But it is still a cash shop. I mean we could get into sub-categories of cash shops, and maybe that is called for. The cash shop implementation is usually dependent in nature on the paymodel of the game and I really see 3-4 these days: Sub, F2P, Freemium, Xpac based. But saying something isn't a cash shop because the term has traditionally meant the primary pay model of F2P games is no longer a modern way to conceive of what a cash shop is or is not.

I have to agree. I am glad that Anet offers this payment model but I also appreciate a variety of payment models..the more the better. I play a few F2P with shops because ..at the least..I always have a game to play despite cash flow. Even if things are going good..I never have to pay a dime. I also have a few sub games I rotate...Aoc..Fallen Earth and WOW (DCUO soon and SWTOR to follow). I am always trying trials for all types of mmos..subbed or f2p.
I love that I have the options available to me...and find it hard to understand why anyone would have an issue with variety. I have tried Guild Wars...and the payment model is decent but I do think something has to be sacrificed for them to accomplish the buy to play format. . The graphics seemed dull to me and I just didn't care for the gameplay. Granted it's been a few years .Since I didn't care for GW , then obviously the payment model .....though a solution to some...solved none of the problems I encountered and thus does me no good what-so-ever.
I am pretty hyped about GW II though and eager to see how it pans out. Then again..aren't they talking about a cash shop for GW2? So maybe Arenanet isn't as satisfied with their buy to play model as some players seem to be.

Don't be shy, go ahead and explain why he shouldn't think of it as a cash shop. I wanna see what you pull out of your ass to show how it isn't pretty much like a typical cash shop.
First off looks like nowadays people are dumb enough to accept every PR bullshit that is thrown at them. I mean, 15 $ a month ARE for server structure, GM support, developers and what not having a cash shop on top of that is simple a rip off.
I'm fine with having to pay for expansions extra but selling virtual stuff and be it even fluff items (most know that I won't be just fluff) plus having a monthly fee on an extremely content light game is another typically SOE move. They will never learn.
If people would be more intelligent ideas like this would have been dead long ago. Maybe they plan on making it free to play soon don't know..I feel sorry for all those who liked the game.
WoW HAS an item shop period. Selling virtual stuff for real money = item, cash shop or however you want to call those customer ripoffs.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
I like that so many believe that once you buy a video game of any kind...you are forever entitled to any extra content that is ever created. I kind of understand how a monthly subbed mmo might make you think this is the case....but it is not. Monthly subs are for server access as far as I'm concerned..without the server..your copy of Cataclysm or DCUO is useless. In the old days..from cartridges and floppies to early dvd games...you buy the game and that was it. Gaming has changed ..as we all know....and so has the manner in which we can pay for and enjoy games. I have no problem with shops...since I have no illusions of entitlement. I wish i could pay for an MMo and just play without temptations of a cash shop..but ultimately it's my decision to buy stuff. I'm not going to give up a fun and enjoyable game just because it has an optional cash shop.
And it is our decision not to buy this game and warn others about what is going on.
You want to give more and more money to the devs, go right ahead. But I dont see why I should pay more for the exact same service that I got from other MMORPGs ten years ago.
Btw, gaming has not changed. There are tons of games, the majority, that does not cost a dime after you purchased it. That is still the norm, this is just greed.

I agree with Yamota here.
BarCrow is playing the "sense of entitlement" card to put down people who don't want to buy a product with [sub] + [cash shop]. This card is played to insult people who prefer (and state this preference) to purchase an inclusive package game for various reasons. This is a relevant consumer point of view. This loaded term (entitlement) is a spillover from conservative politics into a discussion about a digital product being offered for sale to the public. It also implies that the person who does not have a "sense of entitlement" is more intelligent, clear-headed, and realistic in making judgements.
Let's look at the cash shop this way: Assume you go to buy a car and the basic price is 35K (whatever currency). Then the dealer says if you want spare tires, jack, rear-view mirror on the passenger side, etc., then you need to pay extra in the cash shop. You can still drive the car without a spare tire, but it is more convenient if you buy one. This is a valid business strategy a car manufacturer or dealer may choose.
Consumers do have a right to prefer, however, a car that sells for 35K and includes both rear-view mirrors and a spare tire, especially if this is the past industry practice and consumers don't want to see it change. Companies don't have to listen to consumers, of course.
Besides that, the extra revenue is not going to fun some small group of developers. It is going to feed Warner Brothers and Sony Entertainment Online. It is purely a strategy to milk as much money out of this product as possible. There is nothing wrong with attempting that strategy, just as there is nothing wrong with consumers voicing valid objections to such a strategy.
BarCrow, do you think consumers voicing their opinions reflects a "sense of entitlement"?
