Hmm, you seem to be playing something else then I do. :-)
The mobs sure have more animations then that. I quess you haven't been kicked around by one of them yet. :-)
Perhaps you should read a bit on the background of the game, they never annouced it to be unique or very different from other games, just promissed a lot better game play. And that they did allright, even in beta this game is more smooth then I have seen so far in other games.
Do the mobs even move in this game? Do they have more animations then walk, stand still?
/sarcasm
No, they don't- mobs all just sit there on the spawnpoints and you kill them. That's exactly how it works. Trion has only gotten to the point within a month of release in a P2P MMORPG of spawning mobs for players to kill- not giving them movement animations, skills, or any type of combat. They just stand there, maybe walk, and you kill them.
/sarcasm off
Really? These thoughts popped into your head and passed the brain/mouth barrier with flying colors?
I played the beta, and it was a standard mmo with nice shaders.. well nice if you wanna compare it to the old games.
I thought it was bland and didn't bring something new to the table, although i loved the idead of the soul system it became apparent to me it was the same as secondary advancment like all other games only renamed.
Although i jumped in the game like i did when WoW came out because some of my freinds adored it and i wanted to play a game with em, but it still won't grow on me.
Like OP said the combat is bland, stiff animations and it just plain welll... plain..
The entire game is so generic, probably why it sells so good since theres something for everyone, you don't hate it.. but you don't love it.
What i hope in the future is more niche mmos and less gigantic "for everyone", so everyone knows if they hate it or love it, you see it with mortal online, darkfall, eve online etc that they form strong communities that really love the game.
oh sorry for the rant.
Like i was saying hehe, yes the combat is boring expected more from RIFT, if you say "oh thats normal" then you really need to think, is that what you signed up for.. "normal".. or an "OUT OF THE WOLRD AWESOME ADVENTURE IN A FARAWAY LAND".
apologize for the caps, but had to get the point across.
I don't mind the combat in Rift so much. While I would prefer a more action oriented combat system it just seems most MMO gamers can't deal with that kind of change yet. Rift does a good job of setting itself apart from combat systems like WoW, Aion and such so I'm at least happy for that. It's your standard hotbar watching setup but a little more involved than others.
If the combat system in Rift is just something you can't stand then I'd recomend something like DCUO or AoC. Those are pretty much the only 2 right now that offer a more action oriented combat system, well Vindictus could be thrown in there if you don't mind the free to play setup they have.
Stiff... I'm not too impressed with the next gen combat at all.
I'm playing DC Universe this week instead of playing Rift.
I logged into Rift for 20 minutes, played and promptly logged out.
Rift is a "better" game, but DC Universe is more "fun", DCU movement and combat feels more fluid and alive.
The combat in Rift is almost as fast paced as DCUO. However, DCUO is a button-masher "twitch" combat game. Rift is a more traditional mmo.
That being said, Rift has far more going for it than DCUO. There is more to do, the soul system leads to over 250 combinations of souls for the classes. DCUO everyone has a ranged and melee attack, they change the graphic but functional wise my sorcery villain was no different from my superman-themed hero. Quests in Rift are wide, varied and with many dailies. Quests in DCUO are the same for both sides with just reworded text.
DCUO is basically a console game, that happens to be pretending to be an mmo. Rift is a mmo that is not trying to be a console game. Apples and Oranges.
Obviously I've not read all the posts in this thread.
But for a long time pressing tab 123 combat what ever way you spin it has been around for far to long.
If you've played one you've played em all as far as the combat goes, they all feel samey.
My self I cant play these sort of games any more, not denying other parts of the game might be brill, but this sort of combat is very stale now. Bit like doing the other half in the same position for 20 years...
I'm sure some guy will say he likes tab 123 game play though, he probably likes watching paint dry as well :P
I enjoy combat in Rift playing a mage, because there are always several options. I play a Elementalist/Pyromancer/Chloromancer. Not many points in Elly, so I just have that for the pet really, with pyro i need to decide whether to root and burn, blast away with fireball or use some combination of attacks if i need to take something down quickly, i'm also buffing my pet with crystal shards so he does more damage, and using chloro I stick debuffs on the mobs that heal me, as well as using direct heals etc... There is usually plenty to think about and it's never a case of play/rinse/repeat every combat. I love the fact I can cast on the move as well.
Playing a warrior though, some attacks are pointless when you can just whack the button that does most damage and builds attack points. I find it's not so varied unfortunately, when solo. It's better in groups. One thing I do like about warriors is that they get pets, the Beastmaster's tiger is pretty good.
If I compare it with my hunter in WoW which was always send in the pet, blast away with rifle, collect loot, send in the pet, blast away with rifle, collect loot, etc... etc... (not having a go at WoW btw, I really enjoyed WoW)
In response to the poster, I would not agree or disagree fully.
PvE combat is not that great, I do agree with that, mobs barely move, their behavious patterns are so bad.
PvP combat on the other hand is exciting to me, the class system adn the variety of skills makes you have to be very proactive, yes some people think that there is a best rotation on some OP classes, but honestly, I played almost every spec in this game except for a few and you can play so differently depending on who you are facing, what they are using against you and what you are trying to achieve.
Being more of a PvP focused player, I would say I like the combat system.

It's too bad almost everything else about DCUO is lame (at least for PC players). The combat is kind of fun.
Rift doesn't have 'next gen' combat. They have "classic mmorpg combat" << Trion's description of their game, not mine. Why would you expect the combat to be anything other than what it is?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I think he was expecting FUN combat, not revolutionary, not new, just FUN and it appears they didn't quite deliver that for him.
Edit: acutally he did say "next-gen" so you're right, slap me twice for not reading the OP once again.

MMORPG combat is kind of slow no matter what you do. If you've played WoW or Warhammer, then you've experienced the combat in Rift. There's not a whole lot you can do about that style of combat. It works for what it is, but it's not a major draw for the game.

I don't quite agree.
It's been a while since I played WoW and WAR, so my memory is iffy, but I remember fighting one mob at a time. An MMORPG designed for combat where it's usually 1v1...yes, it's slow and feels very much the same from game to game.
In Rift, I'm usually fighting 3+ mobs. Sometimes, 6+ mobs. I intentionally design my characters to be good at fighting multiple mobs at a time.
@ Fervor: In WoW and warhammer you can also design characters to fight multiple mobs at once, the gameplay is generally the samein terms of speed and skill, it's a specific genre, same with EQ2, EQ1, and many more.

True.
At the end of the day a lot comes down to playstyle and attitude to the game. The one thing I like about Rift is it makes me think in combat, at least with a mage.

Hmm don't check they smell like AoC mobs too closely then.

Rift is so boring, someone made a video comparing it to pong.

This is why I like the PvP in Rift.

stopped reading at 'next gen combat'.
who the fuck told you its next gen?
even if you were told, cant you see there is nothing next gen about it?
and then the discussion ends.

Is it better now or just as slow?
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
Nope.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Nope.
