Well, it's nothing innovative, but at least the animations are okay and it's responsive.
I'd rather have this combat system done in a solid manner than something "innovative" as for instance Mortal Onlines combat that doesn't work properly.
I dont have any problem with the combat, at first I was a unsure about it, but I gave it a little time and its just fine IMO. The animations are smooth and responsive, its what I expect from an MMoRPG.
The Combat Gameplay in Rift is major disappointment. Its not fun.
Its simply not fun. What a shame.
Why do people feel the need to post crap like this? If you don't like it, don't play the game. See how simple that is? Now, if you were to post something useful like reasons as to WHY you feel this way, then your post might have a bit of validity. Damn attention whores are everywhere these days.
1) Rough movement animations
2) Repetitive Combat Animations
3) Spam the same 4-5 buttons continuously (2-3 buttons during levels 15 and below)
4) Without Auto Approach makes it really hard during chaotic Rift's with lots of people, hard to find your target and keep in range
5) Bland gear graphics and lack of models
I'm guessing they ran out of funds so they skipped perfecting things like Animations, Character Creation and Gear Models....
It was alright to me. Pretty much your standard MMO fare.
I must say though, that I could stare at my toons on the Character select screen for hours. SImply beautiful.
Some of the female toons are not to bad, but all the male ones are terrible, not to mention lack of sliders for your body means a lot of people are going to look the same.

LOL LOL excuse me while I LOL!!!!!
Combat isn't fun huh??? Than maybe you should check out other genre's buddy. I am seriously beginning to think that some of these kids came to MMO's from other games.. Maybe FPS, maybe action adventure games. I don't know what it is , but MMO's have been like this since DAY ONE.
When you could first play an MMO in virtual world, the combat was similiar to this combat.
Some of you guys are expecting some major change. Can we say Vindictus??? Oh wait that game failed.
THis is an MMORPG buddy, this is how the combat is gonna be, and I happen to enjoy rift. I wasn't even considering the game, but playing beta has turned me into a believer, and a buyer.
Yeah to bad people got allready bored of the 10 year old combat system.
Really, because there's a game with almost the exact same type of combat that has 12 million (allegedly) who disagree.
Just because people are playing wow doesnt mean they enjoy its combat.I am one of those.
At least wow has better and more variation in animations than rift.
The animations in rift exceed and out perform that of wow. If I wanted to play a game with wows graphics I would go play Zelda Orcarina of time on the 64. Didnt that game come out in like 97-98 or something???

That doesn't even make any sense- are you saying there are players in WoW that don't enjoy it's content but enjoy sitting back and watching the animations? Are they casting on themselves? Just standing in cities watching the night elf bounce or naked toons dancing on mailboxes?
It seems to me that if people are playing a MMO that is entirely based around combat that they are probably okay with the combat. Ockham's Razor

So you think all MMOs should stay this way forever and nothing ever change?

So you think all MMOs should stay this way forever and nothing ever change?
There is alot of things that make rift a unique game... what do you think MMO's should start doing???
Without changing the genre into something else, do you have any ideas? I mean Vindictus came out with it's "innovating combat" ideas, but it doesn't feel like a true MMO, and it definately plays more like a console based game. I don't know Assasins creed, but that is giving it way too much credit, bc AC was an epic game, and vindictus is an instanced and badly scripted POS.

Nothing ever change? Plenty of things change but look how MMOs in the same fantasy subgenre that have other combat systems have fared- AoC? Not so hot. Vindictus... DCUO?
Combat hasn't changed immensely in the last ten years because that seems to be one of the things longtime MMO players complain the least about so long as it's bug-free and has some polish.

Your AION video definately makes me miss my chanter.... The only problem with your RIFT VS AION combat is that you are playing on a lvl 50+ chanter(or gladiator, I did a double take on that) (with the graphics maxed out I might add) vs a Level 5 Rift toon... appearing that you lowered the graphics in rift to make AION seem more appealing.
Yes, I agree AION is an epic game, despite what some of the ppl on these boards try to say, but you are not giving rift a fair shake here. I would still be playing aion if it wasn't for NCsoft and their reckless swinging of the banhammer.
EDIT**** After reviewing your aion video again I realized that the first toon was your gladiator, and the second toon was your chanter.

Actually combat hasn't changed in the past 15 years almost. Nexus was years before wow and even months if not a year before UO and it had the exact same , put your spells on a toolbar select an enemy target and cast system as all the mmo's that followed in its footsteps.
Sure some things can change, but the combat in this game is fine for now. Let's see something innovative that works, but it hasn't came out yet. Even the games coming out boasting about a different combat system are already being rejected by the community.
Yeah to bad people got allready bored of the 10 year old combat system.

It makes sense.I don't know about you but in rift the jumping and movement of most races felt wrong to me. Also, rift has the worse holster/unholster weapon animation i have ever seen(check it out yourself, youre going to get disapointed). Not to mention the underwater jumping animation that rift(2011 AAA next generation mmo) has. I can just keep going on but i dont wont to trashtalk the game any further. It does most things well, but don't blame the people that are tired of the same things and want something new and more fun to play.

I actually lowered the graphics on both, since everything craps out when I'm using fraps. The point was the animation, not the graphics.
My Aion toons have more skills for sure (The Glad is level 23, and the Chanter is 43), but the video does show enough of both to give viewers a basic idea of what the animations look like in the two games.

If you think that rift's animations are good, then i guess your standards about animations are pretty damn low. I am pointing out some gamebreaking animations( gamebreaking for me), at the above post. Graphics dont impress me either.I played tera's kobt last week, after that rift's graphics felt terrible to me.
Important facts: 1. Free to Play games are poorly made. 2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals. 3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE. 4. Community is more important than you think.

Ok.... Wow's animations are garbage, sorry but they are. Rifts are much better, perhaps you play the game on low settings but to us computer ppls that have the gear to put ours on ultra plus (custom max) the animations are beautiful. The game is beautiful... Sorry you have an e-machine while I have a beast machine.

Increasing the graphics won't change the things that people are complaining about. Higher textures won't make the arms move any differently.

I agree. And to the above posters; does each skill have different animation?
I personally did not notice whole lot variation between each skill.
