Teala, I think it's normal to have second thoughts. I didn't see your blog as being 'all doom and gloom' as others may pretend. And I won't comment on the squirrels, as this is turning into a massive strawman against you. And to the others, she did wrote this key paragraph:
Here is what I know of the game as it is right now. Things may change. Rift still has about a month before release. So take what I tell you with a grain of salt. Rift developers are good. They reworked a whole class between two beta events. So things can and will no doubt change before the game launches.
You open up with a comment about it being a WoW clone. And you end your entry warning them from sticking to 'same old same old'. Personnally I don't see anything wrong with a company trying to compete with All Mighty Blizzard. And since every MMO since WoW has been called a clone (except maybe, Eve?), this argument holds little value to me.
Your follow up about graphic issues. Glitches, bland water effects, poor animations. Those are good critics, and I have nothing against it. You also complain about the sound. I think they could do better. I don't know if my craptop had to do with it, but when I played, I felt like the music was not looping properly.
Though, I realized your main complaints are all cosmetics. You found crafting to be ok, warfronts to be fun, the soul system to be good (ok except the ranger one because of the pet), you liked the rifts, you found questing ok... Such a lot of positive comments couldn't be found since possibly Lord of the Ring Online. There were no 'game breaking mechanics', or major software issues... and it seems you liked your experience in Rift. So where are these second thoughts coming from?
I think you are getting second thoughts because you are nervous about Trion Worlds. You don't know this company, as they are releasing their first product. (Speaking of, they are already working on 2 other MMOs) Will they release a product and let it rot? Will they halve their development team once the game is released? Will they stop listening to their playerbase on March 1st? I doubt it; They seem to have a solid roster, and someone reported they have a year of content to be released throughout the next year.
"Speaking of PvP and PvE. Big debate on this and here is where I stand on it. DAoC offered co-op servers and straight up PvE servers - Mythic got it right. Trion is doing it wrong. Despite the arguments for Trion's PvP/PvE mechanics as they are now...if they wish to really tap into the market...they'll have to cater to both PvP players and PvE players - if they do not - they are shooting themselves in the foot."
I actually don't mind if the squirrels are ugly in Rift because if they are cute I would be sad if I had to kill them LOL. I would probably just skip any quest or achievement to kill them if Trion made them too cute. That might sound lame to some but I tried not to kill those little bouncing fungi in Aion, for example.
Anyway I know this is about a lot more than squirrels of course. Sorry to see you are having some second thoughts about playing Rift. Maybe there will be something you see in the next two beta events that make you excited again to play it.
I didn't go all turncoat...Rift is a decent game...it just needs polished and it needs to do it better than WoW. That is all I am saying. Take it for what it is worth. Because the fact remains. If they don't, it can join Warhammer, AoC and Aion in the discount bin.
But, how can you expect a game to be released with more polish than an industry leading game that has had subs for 5 years? I'm really glad the people at Trion gave us a product that looks as good as it does... I'm sure there are one or two glitches, but those can be reported and corrected. One thing that I've really liked about Trion is that they are listening to their fanbase... I really feel like Blizzard has lost touch with theirs. I think you might be asking a little too much from a newly released game.
Oh, and btw there are fire, water, life, death, earth, and air squirrels that you can buy!!! I loved those little guys! Plus you really should see Hoppy, the Harbinger of Regulos!
Seems some people aren't able to read objectively anymore.
At least what I read was a far more positive column than most of the other posters have read judging their nasty personal attacks ... Jeez guys, get a grip. It also isn't an official review, it is a blog post, a column, an opinionated piece. Take it for what it is.
*shakes head in disbelief*
Yo!
If it was me who praised a game one day and the next blasted it too hell you guys would all call me out on it.
Yeah, you are correct. You would have been called out. I just feel over the last few weeks your Rifts defence is getting a little....shall we say over zealous. In my opinion anyway and mean no offence dude. Just think it may be worth steping back a little. I like the game, will probably be buying it. But it's not perfect by a long way.
I honestly wouldnt have even posted if it was another poster.
I just don't like how she just went all turn coat on me.

LOL All i know is you went from loving the game to saying you want nothing to do with it and it would fail in a 24 hour span.
I may have been a tad mean ( I guess) but something like that annoys me.
Also several of the problems you have like clipping and anomolies can easily be fixed.
Hell WoW had a shitty loot bug and clipping for the first two years. do you remember night elf hair sticking through helmets for the longest?
Man I'm finally glad you got it. They even cloned the bugs.
Not a bad blog entry overall, not entirely posative or negative, not entirely accurate on every detail though. But thats ok, as the source of information wasn't exactly available to make correct on every detail either. None of the mistakes are big enough to make an issue out of though, and most I'm sure will clear themselves up in later events/play times. Like the 'random' graphical glitches which are actually minor rift tears - its a flavor thing, not a mistake and the intensity of them comes and goes based on certain factors. But yeah, easily looked at incorrectly if you dont know what they are or why they are there. As long as this blog is taken for what it is, a player blog based on a Beta event and limited access and playtime, then its a great review.

It was way too long, and full of stuff that is just personal preference. It's really a perfect example of "how not to write to your audience". She spends as much time complaining that night time isn't dark enough as she does talking about the class system. I don't read professional reviews of games that are that long.... no one does, since there's no such thing.
Yes...squirrels. If a game company is going to make a game like WoW(and it is so much like WoW it's like looking in a mirror), then they have to do it better than WoW. That means pay attention to ""all' details...not just a few. WoW is successful because it is polished all over the game. If you think for one second that people playing Rift will not notice these things...think again. Everything I wrote is dead on. Rift has to do it better than WoW. If they do not. It'll be the next Warhammer, the next AoC, the next Aion. Is that really what you want to see?
As for being to negative. Maybe Trion should make their game better. I am not going to just let these game developers get away with making crappy games. If I see something in a game that I feel is half assed or just out right bad..I am going to say so.
because wow hasnt had 7+ years to polish.
I recall crashing every hour or so the first week, mispellings all over the place in quest texts, not to mention other minor things.
Trion is more polished in its current state than wow was on release.

you're probably dillusional about quest mistakes in wow, and i didnt notice THAT MUCH bugs in wow on release or beta... so i dunno tbh...

So these are my 2¢. Thanks for the read.
I do have 1 question. Can you elaborate on this?
"Speaking of PvP and PvE. Big debate on this and here is where I stand on it. DAoC offered co-op servers and straight up PvE servers - Mythic got it right. Trion is doing it wrong. And the Weather Effect was added in patch 1.10.0 - Storms of Azeroth, released in March 2006.
